George R.R. Martin Is Planning A Blog Post On "Everything That's Gone Wrong With HOUSE OF THE DRAGON"

Despite previously praising the first few episodes, it seems George R.R. Martin has some major issues with season 2 of House of the Dragon, and is planning a blog post on the matter...

It sounds like George R.R. Martin may have some issues with the second season of House of the Dragon.

The Game of Thrones author, who is also listed as co-creator and executive producer on House of the Dragon, took to his “Not a Blog” over the weekend to hint at some significant grievances with the recent sophomore season of HBO's GOT prequel series.

Martin began by admitting that he’s had “a pretty wretched year,” before revealing that he is planning to list off his problems with the show in an upcoming blog post.

"I need to talk about some of that, and I will, I will… I was away from my computer traveling from July 15 to August 15, so a lot of things that needed saying did not get said. I am glad I took that trip, though. My stress levels beforehand were off the charts, so much so that I was seriously considering cancelling my plans and staying at home. I am glad I didn’t, though. It was so so good to get away for a little, to put all the conflict aside for a time. I began to feel better the moment the plane set down in Belfast, and we all headed off to Ashford Meadow to see the tournament. We had five great days in Belfast and environs, and that made me feel so much better. The rest of the trip was fun as well, a splendid combination of business and pleasure that included visits to Belfast, Amsterdam, London, Oxford, and Glasgow. I look forward to telling you all about our adventures… though it may take a while. I had a thousand emails waiting for me on my return, and then I went and brought a case of covid back with me from worldcon, so I am way way behind.

I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though. TODAY is Zozobra’s day, when we turn away from gloom."

While season 2 of House of the Dragon did prove to be somewhat divisive (the finale, in particular), the writer's comments came as a bit of a surprise since he has previously been very supportive of the show, and was actually full of praise for the first couple of S2 episodes. However, he did later indicate that he wasn't quite so keen on how the Blood and Cheese scenes were handled in the premiere, "A Son for a Son."

“Well, there’s a lot of be said about that, but this is not the place for me to say it. The issues are too complicated. Somewhere down the line, I will do a separate post about all the issues raised by Blood and Cheese… and Maelor the Missing. There’s a lot to say.”

As you might expect, Martin's post has been met with a flurry of backlash, with many fans urging him to forget about throwing shade at House of the Dragon and get back to work on the penultimate A Song of Ice and Fire novel, "The Winds of Winter."

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon season 2 sees Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans reprise their respective roles. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

The directors for the new season are Alan Taylor (Episodes 1 & 4), Clare Kilner (Episodes 2 & 5), Geeta Patel (Episodes 3 & 8), Andrij Parekh (Episode 6), and Loni Peristere (Episode 7).

If he wished there were more good GoT content, he should put down the bottle and the lamb shanks and produce it himself.

Fat lazy grouch.

It’s hard to criticize someone after you give them plot and rough summary of character and hope that they reach your expectations. Either he produces on the show or shut up and write the books. At lead then, they have something to base the show off.

@Mrnorth1921 - the show is based on a story that's finished

@Polaris - then what’s he complaining about?

@Mrnorth1921 - the unnecesary changes? Nonsensical scenes and OOC characters? Or maybe the post will only be about how the season was reduced from 10 episodes to 8.

@Polaris - a story thats finished but that skips large chunks and leaves a lot to your imagination. And one that's told by an unreliable narrator.

@Polaris - Its a story yes but it basically is a summary of a story told from multiple accounts lol

a accurate adaptation was going to be an issue

He is partly too blame for the source material in my opinion

changes where always going to be an issue for HODT unless it was a miniseries jumping time which fans didnt enjoy in season 1

the stuff George wrote is very difficult to adapt as it is

George using unreliable narrators is also a problem since that means you never know if the versions youre reading are true

I think he should devote his energy to actually writing and finishing his books

@twistedcastles @BigPhilbowski - The writers can fill in the blanks or choose the version of what happened they like the most. The fact that the book is written as a chronicle makes it easier to be accurate imo, because they don't have to stick to that many details. Unreliable narrators are no excuse to shoehorn scenes that go against the internal logic of the world, to cut characters, change characters' motivations mid-season, blame everything on misunderstandings or mistakes, spoil important plot points in detail, or pretend that there could be peace even after the death of two children, who after a couple episodes no one seems to really care about anymore. It's bad writing.

Season 2 was a step down from the first one, but was nowhere near as bad as the last two seasons of Game of Thrones.

Calm down George and finish Winds of Winter already.

The problems with this season I thought were already kind of explained/discussed? They got cut by two episodes last mi Ute because HBO lost 10billion and the writers strike made it difficult to concisely and cohesively fix some of the plot elements. I don’t agree with some genuine writing changes/directions but overall loved this season regardless

So he says...
"My stress levels beforehand were off the charts, so much so that I was seriously considering cancelling my plans and staying at home. I am glad I didn’t, though. It was so so good to get away for a little, to put all the conflict aside for a time. "

Cool cool. We all need a break from stress especially if youre a public figure. Oh but then he says...

"I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON"

No. You don't NEED to write the posts
This dude welcomes the drama and bathes in it 😖

So... is a preview of an upcoming blog post like a teaser for an upcoming movie trailer? Is that where we're at these days? It's kinda like in business where you send out a group email notifying people that you are planning on putting together a team to have a meeting to determine when and how to assemble a group to determine and document the high level direction of a new project and present it to leadership. Good Lord!

@StSteven - perhaps, was newsworthy enough for this website to report on, which reads like a reaction video, where only contribution reactor does is just nod emphatically at key points. yet, enough content we both felt need to reply to the story about a blog post an old man reported he didn't look forward to writing... someday. that's where we exist in this food pyramid

@dubz - Well if nothing else then it's good to know that we're doing our part to contribute to this ecosystem 😳.

FWIW, that was just a preview of the full comment that I will make in response to your comment which was a response to my comment on the original topic. I will post my complete comment one day, as I feel I must share my complete thoughts, once I find the time after I complete a rather lengthy post I started sometime ago and not yet completed about how I sincerely doubt that Disney will ever allow Marvel to produce an R-rated movie and therefore there's no way that "Deadpool 3" will ever be R-rated. I understand that it may be irrelevant now and no one may care, but it's important to finish what you started before moving on to other things 😉.

Probably hates what they've done with Alicent and Rhaenyra.

@McMurdo - The worst parts of season 2 for me were Damon’s waste of time storyline and way too much focus on the regular people in king’s landing.

I found the hesitancy for full on war from Alicent and Rhaenyra to be one of the more compelling storylines.

@mountainman - is that daemon arc part of tue books? I am not familiar with the books but that arc feels really out of place and seems shoehorned just to give him something to do

@vectorsigma - it is a part of his storyline in the books
Polaris
Polaris - 9/2/2024, 9:55 AM
@vectorsigma - The part of him having visions wasn't in the book. He also had a lot less trouble raising an army. I liked his arc this season for the most part, but I think it went on too long and there was too much emphasis on the throne, when he should have been over that by then, plus the vision with his mother, that I feel was there just for shock value. But I liked how they showed Harrenhal as a truly haunted castle and that they don't shy away from the magical elements of the world (like game of thrones did).
