We recently found out that HBO's small-screen take on Watchmen will premiere on October 20, and now a new featurette has been released which provides our best look at the show yet.

Accompanied by commentary from showrunner Damon Lindelof and star Regina King, the footage makes it very clear that this "adaptation" will actually be a follow-up to Alan Moore's seminal comic series, as a Rorschach mask-sporting terrorist organization known as the Seventh Calvary rises up to wage war against the police force.

We also get a few more hints of Doctor Manhattan's presence in the story, and a glimpse or two of Nite Owl's ship, Archie!

Check out the featurette down below, and let us know if you plan on tuning in for Watchmen next month.

From Damon Lindelof and set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, this drama series embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own. The cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk. Watchmen is based on the graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons and published by DC.

Mainstream superhero films and to a large degree TV has been completely asleep at the wheel when it comes to the power of anonymity, symbolic representation, and the implications of living double lives. The Avengers are almost completely public figures, the DC movies were up their own ass about basically everything else while Snyder was in charge, and has now all-but dropped it. The CW shows have flirted with it, but since every hero has an entire supporting cast who knows their identity, it's blunted. Daredevil was the only show to do something interesting with it, in my view, and even then only briefly in the second season.

So... yeah, these are important and engaging themes that I am happy to see explored. A lot matters in the execution, and I'm not ecstatic that we get these themes played out in an isolated Watchmen context, but if they're being thoughtful and pointed, then I'll give it a chance.

But I'd much rather see it playing out in a world that wasn't built around those themes for maximum utility. The real power of the superhero genre (I think) is that it is robust and flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of stories. But when a world is built to service that story, it is less impressive to me.

@MidnightCaptain - A show being R rated does not make it mature or good. It makes it adult in content. TV shows don't get R ratings because they discuss the difficulties and realities of life and society. They get R ratings because they have tits and dicks and blood and guts and cuss words in them. You'll find a lot of PG-13 content that deals with the former a lot better than R rated material. Last time I checked, Legion was a show that dealt with mental illnesses and yet it was a PG-13 show AND one of the most acclaimed comic book series. Hell, most comic book content is PG-13 by nature.

If you want adult content so badly, Pornhub is always available.

That “cruel” line Jeremy delivers... reminiscent of BVS. Hopefully, this trailer doesn’t break my hopes like BVS did.
