It was a very close call, but after several stellar seasons, Marvel's
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was officially renewed for a sixth season on ABC back in mid May. However, rather than returning to viewers in the Fall, the veteran Marvel show won't air until sometime around summer 2019, when it debuts with an abbreviated 13 episode season.
Even though
S.H.I.E.L.D. won't debut its sixth season until next summer, star Chloe Bennet has seemingly revealed that the show will return to production and begin filming as early as next week. This seems to be much earlier than normal for the show, even when it had a regular 22 episode order; perhaps things have changed behind the scenes or the crew just wants to get a headstart.

The season 5 finale saw team S.H.I.E.L.D. face off against Graviton and stop Robin's prophecy, and therefore the cracking of the Earth, from ever occurring. With the planet safe from destruction (but not Thanos), Coulson was dropped off on the shores of Tahiti to enjoy his last days alive with May. The rest of the team, under the new leadership of Mack, set their sights on finding the Fitz that was frozen in space under the care of everyone's favorite Chronicom, Enoch.
Where season 6 takes the show is anyone's guess, but with the show debuting next summer, it likely will not have to deal with the aftermath of
Avengers: Infinity War or the events of
Avengers 4 and may effectively serve as the beginning of phase 4 of the MCU. With an initial focus on finding Fitz, perhaps the show will continue its foray into space adventures, with or without Coulson...
