Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was meant to capitalise on the success of The Avengers, and the first season featured some noteworthy tie-ins to the MCU (including an appearance from Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury).
Those continued for a while, but as the years passed, the series became increasingly standalone. Kevin Feige never wanted Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to happen and it was made under Marvel Television's purview, allowing Marvel Entertainment's Isaac Perlmutter and his Creative Committee to call the shots.
The show improved once it stopped trying to link up with what was happening in theatres, but Marvel Studios continued restricting which characters it could use and viewership steadily declined until it concluded with season 7.
While elements of Marvel Television's Netflix TV shows have been made MCU canon, we don't necessarily expect that to be the case with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Talking to Katee Sackhoff, Agent Melinda May actress Ming-Na Wen confirmed she hasn't ever received a call from Disney asking her to reprise the role (despite the Multiverse now being in play).
"No, they have not...it's weird, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sort of became a separate entity for whatever reason because it was on the network as opposed to streaming," The Mandalorian star explained. "I think there's some - and this is where my obliviousness also helps because I don't understand it, so you're asking the wrong person, I just know that there's some sort of division."
Wen went on to share her belief that the series deserves more credit for the role it played in helping bring the MCU to the small screen. "Yeah, but we were the first, so you think we should get some accolade for helping launch Marvel in what the TV [department] that it is now."
"[Coulson isn't dead] in every timeline!" Clark Gregg said during a recent interview when asked about his MCU future. "Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, 'I don't know, there's many Multiverses here...' People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin is [like] The Oz."
While we don't expect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to ever make any sort of comeback, it's not outside the realm of possibility that the characters could show up to lend Earth's Mightiest Heroes a hand when they set out to save the Multiverse.
