AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Ming-Na Wen Talks Marvel Studios/Television "Division" And Possible Return

Ming-Na Wen became a firm fan-favourite among Marvel fans for her role as Agent Melinda May in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and she's now reflected on the division between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was meant to capitalise on the success of The Avengers, and the first season featured some noteworthy tie-ins to the MCU (including an appearance from Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury).

Those continued for a while, but as the years passed, the series became increasingly standalone. Kevin Feige never wanted Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to happen and it was made under Marvel Television's purview, allowing Marvel Entertainment's Isaac Perlmutter and his Creative Committee to call the shots.

The show improved once it stopped trying to link up with what was happening in theatres, but Marvel Studios continued restricting which characters it could use and viewership steadily declined until it concluded with season 7.

While elements of Marvel Television's Netflix TV shows have been made MCU canon, we don't necessarily expect that to be the case with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Talking to Katee Sackhoff, Agent Melinda May actress Ming-Na Wen confirmed she hasn't ever received a call from Disney asking her to reprise the role (despite the Multiverse now being in play).

"No, they have not...it's weird, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. sort of became a separate entity for whatever reason because it was on the network as opposed to streaming," The Mandalorian star explained. "I think there's some - and this is where my obliviousness also helps because I don't understand it, so you're asking the wrong person, I just know that there's some sort of division."

Wen went on to share her belief that the series deserves more credit for the role it played in helping bring the MCU to the small screen. "Yeah, but we were the first, so you think we should get some accolade for helping launch Marvel in what the TV [department] that it is now."

"[Coulson isn't dead] in every timeline!" Clark Gregg said during a recent interview when asked about his MCU future. "Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, 'I don't know, there's many Multiverses here...' People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin is [like] The Oz."

While we don't expect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to ever make any sort of comeback, it's not outside the realm of possibility that the characters could show up to lend Earth's Mightiest Heroes a hand when they set out to save the Multiverse.

She is right that the series deserves more credit atleast…

It’s still one of the best and perhaps most underrated cbtv show out there , It improved and still managed to keep a degree of consistent quality to it for its entire run which is no easy feat.

It’s always gonna have a special place in my heart and I hope we get to see atleast some of the characters from it come into play with the movies & D+ shows sooner than later!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I disagree with the premise that the show got better the more it got divorced from the MCU. First three seasons were dope. More connection would have been better IMHO but it became a blood feud between Feige and Perlmutter and Feige won out. Inhumans got displaced and boom, there went AOS, which was based on that mythology. Gonna have to say that the last 6 or 8 episodes of season 1 is some of the best CBTV out there. Season 2, the birth of Quake, also some great stuff. Shame that things worked out the way they did but I will always love Fitz and Simmons.

Coulson Lives!

First 3 seasons should be cannon.
AOS was a decent show and it did its best to stay in cannon with the MCU for a few seasons. Id love to see Agent Coulson, Quake, Mack and the Cavalry return in the multiverse.

@slickrickdesigns - For sure I'd say at least loose canon with the first three seasons (season one and two should be undeniably FULL canon with the whole interconnection with Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron) as in they have a built in way with the multiverse of saying it was a near identical set of events if any decisions cause(d) any continuity issues, and don't see any real problem season four being canon too.

Putting aside the book, which is easy to work around (possible to have two books of the same name if both copying stuff from the same original carvings) nothing up until they jumped into the future broke anything unless they wanted to delete the Inhumans stuff (but ignoring it should suffice as it wasn't the actual Royal Family stuff at all).

I mean some of the arguments that stuff isn't canon if not referenced in films is akin to me saying your family isn't real cos never heard about them on the news, lol. If the Netflix shows can be confirmed canon when they were far less connected previously and the prior Spider-men cross over to an MCU Spider-man film the arguments on canon becomes moot anyway.

It is only the whole timeloop stuff putting them into likely branch timelines in season 5 and fuzzyness after Infinity war (lack of references, Snap issues and reforming SHIELD) that creates any real problems but as they literaly were in a timeloop, then on an altered timeline, then jumped across to another timeline last couple seasons can easily be put down as a branch or ended on an alt timeline.

However, yeh, no matter how they would go about doing it and what if anything would be confirmed as canon or not would love to see a bunch of them appear again and with us having alt timelines, crossing between alt universes and an eventual crisis type event nothing stopping them bringing any back be they the original versions or variants.

@slickrickdesigns - Season 4 was incredible, though. Not perfect, but I'd say it's better than most of Marvels television output.

The Calvary has to make her proper MCU debut. Also AOS season 4 is one of the best seasons of Marvel television, PERIOD!

Since the Agents have been jumping around the multiverse since Season 4, I kinda hope they'll find their way back to the MCU. If other Marvel TV characters can do so, then so should they get a call.

agents of shield and agent carter should be made canon and serve as the govt/conspiracy/xfiles side of MCU story telling. we can get more action from/ hydra/aim etc that is fleshed on the shows vs being punching bags for the avengers in five minutes of a feature film.

@supermanrex - They kinda did make Agent Carter canon, by casting the same actor as Howards butler, Jarvis, in Endgame even if technicaly he should have been older (that show also had Feige more actively involved in getting it off the ground as Exec Producer than any other show pre-D+).

I need to have Ming-Na over for a serious lap audition. Just to help further her career of course.
