Five Ways To Make AGENTS OF SHIELD A Better Show In The Long Run

Five Ways To Make AGENTS OF SHIELD A Better Show In The Long Run

I, like most of the people here, had a very mixed reaction to the first episode of Agents of Shield. Some things worked, a lot of things didn’t. But whats important is that there are elements that could make it a great show...however, I FEEL some changes do have to be made.

*THESE ARE FIVE PROBLEMS I HAD WITH THE PILOT THAT I HOPE ARE ADDRESSED TO MAKE THE SHOW BETTER. I'M NOT SAYING THEY WON'T BE ADDRESSED, I'M JUST SAYING THAT I HOPE THEY WILL BE.

(it should also be noted that most of these points are based on my own opinions as well as other general reactions to the pilot including users on this site as well as youtube reviewers, etc...)

This is stupid - no two ways about it.
Its the first episode, there's not going to be development.
DodgerNYC

This is exactly how I felt about the first episode, so thank you for wording my problems with it so thoroughly! I don't think it was a terrible episode, but there were definitely things that needed improving. And no matter how attractive Skye was, she was an incredibly annoying character. Once again, I whole-heartedly agree with all your points.

No, Skye has to stay. She's hot.
Nick56
Nick56 - 9/28/2013, 9:14 PM
@Tainted87 I clearly say that the characters can develop over the next few episodes as in every tv show, however my issue is with the fact that they are already the same stock characters we see in so many other shows. Regardless of development there is nothing original or likeable about them. And that has to change.

@DodgerNYC Thanks!

@SnapperCarr Simmons is hot and less annoying. Get rid of Skye, more screen time for Simmons.

No, Skye has to stay. She is hot, is not annoying, and having a character who is somewhat of an outsider on the team will make things more interesting. I will agree that Simmons needs more screen time, but you don't have to completely get rid of a character for that to happen.

And obviously, it will take several episodes to develop all these characters. Look at the Buffy TV show, it took most of the first season, and even a little into the 2nd (since season 1 was only about 12 episodes long), to really develop many of the supporting characters. Whedon will make sure it happens. And the humor was fine.

Kat Dennings was annoying in Thor and she's annoying in 2 broke girls. She makes the same jokes and not only is she not funny, she's mean. Skye, is not even close. Is she the best character, no, but she seems honest, quirky and funny. A lighthearted humor for difficult situations. She's the foil to Agent Ward.
They could've toned down the humor a little, but it's Whedon, did you watch Buffy or Firefly at all? I loved all the references. It didn't hurt the story if you didn't catch them and added a level of depth if you did. Plus, Big-Bang theory is the best comedy on TV right now, so I don't see how emulating that would be a bad thing.
So I agree with Tainted.

@Nick56
You know at first, because it's an image, I had thought you just copied and pasted something from another site. Might still be true even if you defend it.

Here's the deal.
This is a tv show in continuity with the movies. To most people, it appears as though it's a movie tie-in, which nearly everyone who isn't a fan almost always disregards. Example: I'm a hardcore Mass Effect fan, but I haven't read a single book cashing in on the games' popularity.

So what does a tv show with that kind of status do to push it beyond the level of tie-in? It takes a whole different perspective in tone and story.

The comedy pointed out in your picture is fun, I don't get why anyone would have a problem with it. We've seen the scene done to death already in promos, ads, teasers, etc, and for Coulson to make light of the situation was brilliant. It tells us that he doesn't have a stick shoved up his ass like Agent Ward... or you.

Speaking of... have you never heard of Lampshade Hanging? Self-deprecating humor? Post Modernism?

It sounds like you would hate hate HATE the Princess Bride. Or any Mel Brooks type movie.

It just started god damn.
StrangeBlackPantherDoctor

Also the line with Coulson steeping out from the corner was hilarious because it would have been cliche and silly if he came out of the corner he was hiding in.

Nick56 - 9/29/2013, 10:44 AM
@Tainted87 Nope, I made it as a document and then just decided to upload the image of it to here. I have no problem with humor in tv series or movies its just that it felt really out of place in a lot of scenes. And if you look at many other reactions to the pilot you'll find that I wasn't the only one who found this to be an issue.

@jojofmd Well your one of the few people I've found to actually like the Skye character for more than her looks. I'm a big Whedon TV fan and while I agree there is lots of humor, it was well placed enough in most of his shows that it didn't create a tonal mess like Agents of Shield. As for Big Bang Theory I find it to be one of the worst "comedies" on tv, but to each-his own
Nick56
Nick56 - 9/29/2013, 10:49 AM
@StrangeBlackPantherDoctor I know it just started, thats the point. These are problems that need to be fixed sooner rather than later to make the show better. While point #4 can obviously be addressed throughout the course of the series, most of the other points address problems that may be harder to fix but are necessary to fix

Nick56 - 9/29/2013, 11:22 AM
@Tainted87 To continue what I was saying, Princess Bride and Mel Brooks movies are comedies. Im not saying SHIELD has to be as serious as Arrow but it can't just become a joke. SHIELD would benefit from matching the tone of other genre shows like Fringe and Sherlock. These shows have strong characters, serious story lines/dialogue, with comedic moments woven in. Comedy shouldn't be on the fore-front of a drama series unless the creators for some reason want this to be a action comedy similar to the RED movies.

It was a pilot. People are already giving this show so much criticism, and its only aired one episode. I knew this was going to happen. To say things like what they NEED to do, or what they HAVE to do, makes no sense at this point. I respect your opinion. But give it a chance.
Nick56
Nick56 - 9/29/2013, 11:40 AM
@WYLEEJAY I'll certainly give it a chance. And like I said earlier, these are more so my criticisms to the pilot and what I don't want to see in the long run.
WYLEEJAY
WYLEEJAY - 9/29/2013, 12:15 PM
I can tell you right now if your going to use Arrow as the standard to compare it to you will never like it. Arrow is using the same tone as Nolans movies, where Agents is using the MCU. Their not even close to the same tone. Thats why I like the MCU better. Its more enjoyable to me, its not as heavy and serious all the time. Its why I have loved comics my whole life. For entertainment. What entertains me may not entertain you, and vice versa. I loved Iron man 3, and I didn't feel it had too much humor. I can watch it multiple times, and I can't watch Rises again. Dark Knight I can, but not Rises. Cause that's how I feel. But I'm not trying to tell people what the studios HAVE to do, or NEED to do, because I'm in Electronics Sales, not working for Studios that come to me for my advice. Thats my beef, your choice of words when writing. Like I said, I respect your opinion, but when you want people to REALLY listen to what you have to say, choose your words wisely. I learned that the hard way.
Nick56
Nick56 - 9/29/2013, 12:24 PM
@WYLEEJAY Good advice. I didn't say the show should be like Arrow (I have my issues with that show as well) my issues were more so with what I feel is the overuse of humor etc... but to each his own I guess.

NO NO, You all "fans" think Skye is awesome, see there is the fans who love cheesy shit, and are blind when it comes to good writing, character development and think everything is just good because "It's from Whedon" but that's not the case here..

The fans who actually know shit, like some of the points written in this article are actually true.. You just have to face it,

The show is great but there are things that you are just like.. "Seriously?"

Freaking flying car at the end, WHAT THE HELL?

WYLEEJAY - 9/29/2013, 2:20 PM
Somebody show this guy a pic of Nick Furys car from back in the day. They can make a damn aircraft carrier fly, no problem, but a small car and your all "Oh my GOD, its a car that FLIES! Like, OH....MY.....GOD...." LMAO!

Let's all be honest and just agree that everything is subjective. These are your opinions of the show, and it's just the first episode. I can agree that there is a little more humor than necessary, but again it was the first episode, and hopefully they'll get a little bit edgier. Let's just wait and see how the show plays out. It's got a lot of potential and it will take a couple of writing sessions to really get the right tone and feel they are going for. I don't know any show that has a perfect pilot.

Besides the avengers this show has a lot of marvel comics essence. Stan Lee Jack Kirby days. It's really fun. I do wish it to be a little edgier!

Probably think I thought the pilot was golden, eh?

Do you know how much I hate watching tv? Enduring commercials is one of the things I cannot stand. I literally have to make a big deal out of it and mute the tv - at which point whoever in the room with me just gets annoyed because I'm overreacting. Bottom line, if you can get me watching tv, it better be damn good.

So with that, you've got to expect some cynicism from me.

Right now, the show is so far from great, it looks like a dramatic overhaul will need to take place midseason for me to keep watching it. That, and of course, me being off every Tuesday evening.

Pointers are...
* Fitz and Simmons. Ugh. The way the actors describe themselves in promos is bad enough, but they are just... it's like they really want us to think they're cute, in the way that fans really want you to watch something they love but you never heard of or don't have any interest in. Leo's use of his gadgets to find something in the basement was just plain stupid. They are a big problem.

* Agent Ward is either going to quit, or he's going to get transferred somewhere else. He is the most uninteresting character I have ever seen in a comic book type movie/show. As in, the entire cast of Heroes has him beat. Yes, Mohinder too.

* Relevance. Some people think we'd be underestimating or not understanding how Marvel works if we think that Agents of SHIELD won't make a difference in the MCU continuity. I doubt that's true - and yes, the approach they are taking seems to show that they want to desperately fit in with continuity, but won't make an impact at all. If they start introducing actual superheroes (INTRODUCING, not guest-starring) and/or supervillains, then I'll eat crow, but that seems unlikely.
---

Skye is the least of the show's problems. I anticipate she'll get a lot better as the show goes on, to the point where her whole conspiracy theorist backstory will just be a fog. Or she might turn out like Cap in the Avengers.

---

I'm not a Doctor Who fan. My sister, however, has access to my Netflix, and she's watched every episode available. I'll admit, some episodes are actually pretty fun, but a lot of it relies on the viewer knowing a good bit about the show to catch half the jokes and references, not to mention some plot points.

Anyway, she's got me liking John Barrowman, who you know as Malcolm Merlyn. He's a very talented individual, a great singer, a great performer, and has great charm and appeal. Well my sister started watching Torchwood, which stars his character from Doctor Who in a spin-off series. I think she got three or four episodes in and stopped.

That's my concern with Agents of SHIELD. Coulson has the potential to be a clever smart-ass embodying all kinds of aspects of 616 Nick Fury's personality. He did pretty good in the pilot. Unfortunately, his supporting cast just doesn't attract. They're forcing themselves on us, and not in a pleasant way. Fitz and Simmons, as I said, are irritating enough already. Skye is expected to leave a lot of stuff behind to be something of a Wash/Firefly character, which could be great. Ward... yeah, needs to do something interesting. What I really want to see is Melinda May being cool. Ming-Na Wen was great back in the day, and managed to survive Street Fighter... mostly due to voice-acting and ER. She's got the most potential, I think, but we need to see her do more than look out of place babysitting.
