J. August Richards Had No Idea He Was Going To Be Deathlok

Just how secret are things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Whedonverse veteran actor J. August Richards says he had no idea he was going to be Deathlok on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., even after his costume fitting.

J. August Richards starred in the pilot episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but did he know from back then that he was destined to play Deathlok on ABC's superhero drama? Nope. How about when he returned later in the season as a powerhouse addition to Agent Coulson's team? Nope. Well what about when he went in for a mysterious costume fitting? Nada. Well just when did Richards find out? Speaking to HeroComplex, Richards stated, "Everything with Marvel is on a need-to-know basis, so I didn’t officially know [I was going to be Deathlok] until the second episode I did, which I think was the 10th episode in the season. Information is carefully guarded over there. I definitely didn’t know that I was Deathlok. I even had a costume fitting, and I didn’t know what I was being fitted for!" Richards goes on to admit that he did a lot of research for the role, reading a lot of back-issues of Marvel Comics collection, specifically the Michael Collins version of the character.

Touching more on the Michael Collins version of Deathlok, Richards added, "in my reading, I was drawn more to the Michael Collins version because this character is such a good man, such a good moral, decent person. For [Peterson] to do the things he’s asked to do as Deathlok are very difficult for him. When I showed up to play the character for the first couple of days, I was still trying to find it. Obviously these are circumstances that I can’t relate to, but I had to really use my imagination to get at what it would be like for Mike Peterson to be turned into Deathlok. Once I figured it out, it was like night and day, just a huge epiphany on what was going on internally for this character. I feel blessed that I’ve been asked to play this character because I always want to play the person behind the superhero."

Well, its about time they are putting characters in the show that people know and love.

I would love to see an episode about Darkhawk or Sleepwalker.

I'm surprised that Netman isn't here demanding that Deathlok be white or, at least, more "ashy". ;p

@nikgrid The writers said they knew all along and that the series is still following the original plan but who knows if that's REALLY the truth.

They will probably cover up the scarring on his face with metal and give him a robotic eye to replace the damaged one.

People complain that there's no comic material and then when it shows up they say the creators are desperate for them lol good god. It actually goes along with the story if you paid attention... or maybe you're just trolling idk.

Yeah very true. They use comic material but they don't use much of the big guns. It still works though because it's still building up the Marvel Universe.

I've kept up with AOS since episode one and I love all episodes, there are definitely more weaker episodes as well. I also like that there have been hints and nuggets of potential comic characters that'll be brought in. It's its own beast while keeping with the movies. It's really exciting for Deathlok to come into the show, I hope Graviton makes an appearance as a villain soon. Add on the Netflix shows starting with DareDevil and everything that's happening and going to happen in the movies, I'm hopelessly in love with the MCU haha

That's not surprising because Marvel Studios is very protective of details getting leaked.

They like to keep things top secret, until they are ready to release information. That's very cool J. August Richards did research on Deathlok.

Lol! I thought that was Grif for a second too.

I think that in the episode "T.R.A.C.K.S." it was the "final design" of Deathlok because Ian Quinn is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and he is at the head of the Deathlok project.... (He paid for the cybernetic leg but can't for other piece)...

Its weird seeing a bunch of people who barely know (if they know at all) who Deathlok is (as they definitely don't know what) get excited over this as if its a good sign.

I wish a metal leg on a dude that had a tag that said Deathlok would do it for me.

The Michael Collins version of Deathlok is definitely the best so I'm glad to hear those were the comics he enjoyed most. Luther Manning was always kind of one note. Haven't read much with the X-Force Deathlok. Can't bring myself to care about it.

@Jarvis21 He said he was being fitted for a costume, most probably armour to complete the Deathlok look.
