5 Steps Marvel Studios MUST Take To Save The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Disney+ TV Shows

Marvel Studios is about to make some major changes to its Disney+ TV shows and we're taking a look at more essential steps they should take to save the Marvel Cinematic Universe's streaming offerings...

Yesterday, a bombshell report revealed that Marvel Studios has gone back to the drawing board with Daredevil: Born Again and will now start from scratch after shooting nearly half of the show's first season. A few scenes and ideas will remain, but it sounds like much of what was shot will be left on the cutting room floor.

That same piece revealed Marvel Studios plans to hire proper showrunners, stop shooting big-budget TV shows the way they do movies (later fixing them in post-production), and swap splashy event series' for more traditional, multi-season small-screen offerings.

It's clear the studio is already changing its approach to the MCU's place on Disney+ and, after what's proven to be a steep learning curve, that's no bad thing. A lot we've seen from them on the streamer has been fantastic (albeit far from perfect) but we have a few more suggestions for how to fix future TV shows.

Find out what we think Marvel Studios needs to do in the wake of Daredevil: Born Again's creative reboot by clicking the "Next" button below.

5. Follow The Netflix Model (To Some Extent)

DEFENDERS-Vertical-Aftermath-PRE-US-copy

Marvel Television got an awful lot wrong, but they initially approached those Netflix TV shows in a smart way. From the beginning, the decision was made to introduce Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in individual series before uniting them in The Defenders.

In the end, it was all a bit disappointing, but Marvel Studios could follow a similar model in a more effective manner, essentially recreating the MCU on streaming. Rather than using these shows as a launching platform for characters whose stories then continue in movies (several have been guilty of being glorified prequels), why not focus on specific characters and build to an event series?

Like the Infinity Saga, certain shows would be more important than others and we'd still like to see some crossovers between film and television; however, with a specific plan in place, these projects would feel as impactful and intriguing as what we're seeing from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni's Star Wars offerings.

4. Not Every Character Needs A TV Show

nova-copy

Marvel Studios was either forced by former Disney CEO Bob Chapek to develop as much streaming content as possible or have been given too much rope only to...well, you know. The fact is, not every character needs to be showcased in a TV series and that's evident from how much some shows have struggled.

Ms. Marvel, for example, was a lot of fun but got bogged down in its middle chapters thanks to underwhelming villains. Why not just introduce Kamala Khan in The Marvels? Does Agatha Harkness need a six-hour TV series? Does Ironheart? Nick Fury certainly didn't and we're still not sure what Moon Knight accomplished.

It's time to be more selective and avoid the mistake Marvel Television made when the spotlight was shifted to the likes of the Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, and Daimon Hellstrom. Team-ups might be a better option moving forward with a slightly more reserved approach to what feels like endless introductions.

Between the TV shows and Phase 4's endless movie cameos, there are simply too many heroes who have shown up only to never be seen again (Eternals-who?).

3. Better Communication Between The Film And TV Creative Teams

Elizabeth-Olsen-as-Scarlet-Witch-in-Doctor-Strange-in-the-Multiverse-of-Madness-2-copy

One of the most infuriating things about being an MCU fan during the Multiverse Saga has been the obvious lack of continuity and connectivity between the movies and TV shows. Not everything in the Infinity Saga neatly linked up, and that's fine, but these past few years have been nothing if not messy.

Sam Raimi hadn't even watched WandaVision while making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, perhaps explaining why the Scarlet Witch felt like a totally different character. The Marvels isn't expected to reference Secret Invasion and we've seen some pretty big contradictions in terms of how the Multiverse works (it will have taken Loki's TVA three years to show up elsewhere by the time Deadpool 3 is released).

We expect better from Marvel Studios. Clashing production schedules and an apparent lack of planning can be blamed for these missteps but with fewer TV shows now heading to Disney+, we're optimistic things will slowly start to change.

2. Stop Following The Same Formula

Ms-Marvel-Poster

It's recently been revealed that Marvel Studios has been handling its TV shows like movies, shooting them in their entirety and then attempting to figure out what didn't work in post. However, as they've since learned, what works for a two-hour motion picture doesn't quite have the same effect on a multi-episode drama.

We're not sure if this is connected, but a recurring thread through almost all these small-screen projects is a formulaic approach to storytelling that sees the title character only suit up in the finale.

WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law are all guilty of this to varying degrees. Even Secret Invasion kept us waiting for the Super-Skrull until the finale.

Why couldn't we have six episodes of Ms. Marvel protecting New Jersey as a superhero? Did we really need to wait until the final episode to see Sam Wilson embrace being Captain America?

1. Focus On The A-Listers...Mostly

kf-Wn-VV7-VSj-Ja-Yu-C9-RTba6

It's been enjoyable to meet lesser-known characters on Disney+ and we certainly don't want that to stop. However, an argument could also be made that these shows have been at their best when focusing on the heroes we're used to seeing in theaters.

That's why the likes of WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye felt like a big deal, with the fact those shows furthered the stories of Wanda Maximoff, the God of Mischief, and Clint Barton ensuring they're arguably more memorable than, say, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Moon Knight

This has also helped those lesser-known heroes, with Kate Bishop and Monica Rambeau clearly benefiting from that A-List rub; would they have fared as well had they been left to headline their own shows?

There's a balance to be found here but expanding on the characters we see in the movies still feels like the best way to make these TV shows mean something.

@dragon316 - I believe it had to do with the visuals and it being a 3D film when 3D was making a comeback.

I thought it was amazing when I saw it in theatres.

Once it was out on Blu-ray the magic disappeared and I realized it was just Pocahontas in space.

Also it had the James Cameron tropes in the film.

Not a terrible list. I agree with some and disagree with others, but i think the most important thing is getting the writing and script down first, and moving forward from a strong foundation. But this is just the beginning... there are ALOT of things that need to be changed

Or, you know, how about you hire GOOD WRITERS who aren't zealots for their Woke religion or who aren't "diversity hires."

You know, people who earn their job on merit regardless of their ethnicity or orientation or gender?

@HistoryofMatt - ugh you're so tiring, like gum on a shoe
HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 10/12/2023, 1:00 PM
@bobevanz - And yet, I'm not wrong. Almost all of these shows, along with the Star Wars shows, have been written by awful writers who inject their Woke religion into everything they write instead of, you know, writing good characters with motivations people understand, who were hired by Marvel not because they merited being hired but because they enabled Disney to check off an ESG / DEI box has long been a problem.
Variant
Variant - 10/12/2023, 2:45 PM
@HistoryofMatt - Overusing the term woke has been linked to people with really low IQs. And yes, you are wrong. People ARE hired based on their credentials. This weird narrative you're regurgitating is just exaggerated nonsense. It's like someone heard the term "diversity hire" one time and now they just apply it to everything they don't like.
Fin
Fin - 10/12/2023, 5:13 PM
@Variant - Not wrong. Disney employees openly admit their strategy for diverse hires and more “woke” content. They said it clearly in zoom call meetings that were leaked to the public. Their creative team is absolutely and intentionally ruing great characters to promote their progressive ideology. The poor content and lack of interest clearly reflects this. Disney (Star Wars/Marvel) are killing these franchises and losing subscribers as a result. Facts.
HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 10/12/2023, 7:14 PM
@Variant - Go look again at the writers of all of these shows on IMDB and tell me again they were hired based on merit and no because they checked a Woke box for ESG / DEI purposes. The rest of your rant is just ad hominem nonsense.
Variant
Variant - 10/13/2023, 10:20 AM
@Fin - Lol. Not facts. This is a really bad interpretation. No huge company is going to deliberately sabotage their own legacy. This is just idiotic. And um...Marvel Studios is STILL leading all CBM franchises by an astronomical margin. Not to mention they're still the highest grossing film studio in history. Even with the few projects they've done that underperformed.

@HistoryofMatt - This is for you too. But also, nothing I said was ad hominem. It was an assessment of the validity of your argument. Saying something is "woke" is moronic; it establishes nothing in terms of measuring quality.

I think the same could be said about the movies at this point.
Variant
Variant - 10/12/2023, 2:54 PM
@Oberlin4Prez - Not at all. To date, MOST films and shows have reviewed well. And among the FEW that fell short either had bad reviews from critics OR audience. And all things considered, the new Saga is on par with the Infinity Saga. Phase 1-3 had subpar projects of their own. All in all the MCU is still net positive by a good margin tho.
Oberlin4Prez
Oberlin4Prez - 10/12/2023, 4:59 PM
@Variant - Box office doesn’t lie, I realize there are some asterisks from early phase 4 but the quality hasn’t been the same overall. I disagree with your assessment, but it’s your opinion and you have a right to it.
Variant
Variant - 10/13/2023, 6:29 PM
@Oberlin4Prez - I'll be the first to admit Thor 4 and AM3 fell short. Even DS2 to a small degree. All of those films could've been and SHOULD'VE been better than what we got. I think the sensible criticism toward those films is fair. But I still don't think they're "trash". And most other films range from good to great. It just seems to me everyone expects every single project to be Endgame caliber. It's an irrational expectation.

And I don't expect everyone to LOVE the MCU. I just think how dramatic some people can be about it is nonsensical.
VictorAlonzo
VictorAlonzo - 10/16/2023, 11:52 PM
Variant - doing as good as the original incline is NOT a good sign. It's a sign that the subject has peaked, and is now gdescending from it's previous achievements.

Now, you may say that this is a natural occurrence. That may be so in most elements, but for a book company with a library of comics spanning several decades, this is a bad look.

They went from the 60s era of storytelling to the late 2000s of MARVEL NOW in 20 years. Heck, they could've still been dealing with Ultron right now.

Instead we get: Kamala "Fangirl" Khan, Megan "twerking with a bullet in my foot" the 🐴, Reed "idiot-unlocked" Richards, Stephen "oops I did it again" Strange, and the God of "Bro,babydaddy and Love".

I don't care about Hawkgirl, Madasynn, Iron Lady, Whatever that chick is that took over Moon Night, Shuri and little Scrappy Panther.

There has been NO DOOM in the MCU.

NO PROFESSOR X.

NO REAL REED RICHARDS.

NO THING.

NO GHOST RIDER.

NO MAGNETO.

TO HELL WITH "3RD STRING NEVER SOLD WELL ON COMIC STORES" HEROES.

BRING IN THE TOP SHELF, AND STOP MAKING US WAIT FOR THINGS TO GET GREAT!

F@$% I LOOK LIKE PAYING TO SEE THRID STRING PLAYERS STARTING IN THE FINALS???

@VictorAlonzo - This is just another dramatic response. Marvel Studios made B, C, and D list characters house hold fvcking names. It's all they really had to work with at the time of its inception. Meanwhile Fox had the TOP TIER Marvel IP and absolutely wrecked it in embarrassing fashion. AAA Characters don't automatically equate to quality. Even Sony is showing us that. And DC for that matter! Speaking of, the MCU Spidey had a better trilogy than BOTH of Sony's attempts. Review wise AND box office performance. Marvel is already working with top tier characters; just not ALL of them all at once. They'd lose steam way too quick. Best to spread it out.

But now that Marvel Studios has the AAA properties from Fox, they can take their time cooking that all up and getting it RIGHT. Hell, if those projects already started coming, I'd be concerned they got hasty and rushed it.

X-Men, F4, Ghost Rider, etc is coming in due time. As we wait tho, we still have great projects to look forward to. I mean, some of us look forward to them. Others whine incessantly like little children.

@Variant - 🙄🤔😑😐

"Marvel is already working with top tier characters; just not ALL of them all at once. They'd lose steam way too quick. Best to spread it out."

ONE CHARACTER HAS HAD AN ALOMST 40 YEAR RUN. A run that's arguably getting better with time.

The same can be said for 007.

I can appreciate solid stories from other characters, B, C, D, or F.

But giving out sloppy tales with declining financial returns should be a clear indication that something ain't right.

I doubt ANYONE on this site would rather see Widow 2.0 and Hawkgirl return before seeing a well written X-Men or F4.

Problem is, Disney is slowly tightening their grip, and we now see uninteresting encounters with idiotic outcomes.

Captain Marvel could've been good. She could've given a great passage through tons of turmoil from phase 1-3, and become a new beacon of hope for the world.

Judging by the trailer, it seems like some rich exec said:

"Ooh Freaky Friday! Let's do that: With heroes!!!"

Now we have to wait for the rubbish to fizzle, hoping they finally figure out how to maintain a live story as well, or better, than it's been in comic form.

If they keep using the antics of phase 4 and beyond, it will be an Impossible Mission...

@MrDandy - the video hits the nail on the head that each episode of marvel Disney+ doesn’t feel like a whole experience compared to actual television shows.

I think personally Moon Knight suffered the least from this. The reveal ending in that one episode that this might be all in Marc’s head for me excited for the next ep. As did the one where he lands in the field of reefs.

The other shows feel like eps end abruptly.
Variant
Variant - 10/12/2023, 3:08 PM
@MrDandy - The problem with this argument is that MOST of the shows reviewed well. So to say Marvel is "failing" on D+ doesn't make a lot of sense.
tmonster
tmonster - 10/12/2023, 12:37 PM
The problem is not the quantity of shows that have been produced. The problem has been the quality of the shows produced. They have been garbage. I liked the Halloween episode of Wandavision because they finally put Elizabeth Olsen in a costume reminiscent of the old comics and she looked AWESOME. The rest of the show was generic. Falcon and Winter Soldier was probably one of the best series. They were in their own costumes throughout with a big change at the end... NICE. Loki was bad... Tom Hiddleston and female Loki are just jogging everywhere... LAME... Disney has absolutely "chickified" comic book based stories. Men are bumblers, dolts, and uncouth while women are cool, intelligent but completely non-sexy--- because if they make the female characters on shows or movies as equally appealing as they are drawn in comic books... women will scream "miscogeny", "patriarchy." Disney bought marvel and lucasfilm to bring in teen and preteen boys into the fold.... These shows just aren't it. They need to figure out why Chris Claremont's stories took the X-men from near-cancellation and turned it into the property that it became.

6. Keep making them!

I honestly look forward to the TV shows more than the movies. The only one I’ve really been disappointed with so far is Secret Invasion. And maybe the middle part of Ms. Marvel.

Variant
Variant - 10/12/2023, 3:13 PM
@InfraMan - I feel the exact same way. SI disappointed me a bit; I still liked it okay, but it should've been something much greater. And MM really shined in the beginning and end...the villains in the middle of the story were just awful.

And outside of all this, every other show has been great to me. Even She-Hulk minus the bad CGI in some scenes.
InfraMan
InfraMan - 10/12/2023, 3:40 PM

Most of marvel disney+ is an undeniable, unfulfilling mess at this point that leaves me craving a return to marvel TVs’ more serialized approach.
