The Falcon and The Winter Soldier arrives on Disney+ later this month, and while it's not quite as mysterious as WandaVision, there's definitely a lot we still don't know about the series.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers passed the mantle of Captain America to Sam Wilson, but in the show, it's John F. Walker (better known as U.S. Agent to comic book fans) who's wielding the shield.
It's not exactly a well-kept secret that Sam will eventually become Cap, and in an interview with Variety, actor Anthony Mackie elaborated on how it feels to take on such an iconic role.
"I was really surprised and affected by the idea of possibly getting the shield and becoming Captain America," he admits. "I’ve been in this business a long time, and I did it the way they said you’re supposed to do it. I didn’t go to L.A. and say, ‘Make me famous.’ I went to theater school, did Off Broadway, did indie movies and worked my way through the ranks. It took a long time for this shit to manifest itself the way it has, and I’m extremely happy about that."
However, taking up such an important mantle comes with a certain set of responsibilities, and Mackie says he's feeling pressure heading into The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
"I didn’t think we could do on the television what we’d been doing on the big screen. I didn’t want to be the face of the first Marvel franchise to fail. Like, ‘See? We cast the Black dude, and now this shit is awful.’ That was a huge fear of mine, and also a huge responsibility with playing a Marvel character."
The trade notes that the actor told them there have been no discussions about a second season, while he's also unsure what the future holds for Sam Wilson on the big screen. Captain America will always be pivotal to the MCU, so we're bound to see more of him eventually, and possibly in his own movie.
We'll have to wait and see on that front, but expect more details on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier soon. After all, that March 19th premiere is now right around the corner...
