LOKI Head Writer Michael Waldron Talks Turning The MCU On Its Head With The True Power Of The TVA (Exclusive)

With glorious purpose, Loki has arrived.

Ahead of the hotly-awaited premiere yesterday, yours truly was able to sit down with Primetime Emmy Award-winning Head Writer Michael Waldron (Rick & Morty; Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), who is masterminding this latest entry in the great Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Considering this version of Loki Laufeyson isn't exactly the same one we've come to know and love over the course of the past decade (who ultimately perished in Avengers: Infinity War), Waldron found himself in a unique position where he was basically allowed to do anything he could possibly imagine with the character and story, as there were no real guidelines on who this Loki 2012 needed to be.

"It felt very similar to Rick & Morty in that sense in that it was like ‘Alright, you can do anything here,’ there’s no cap on our imagination. That’s a testament to Marvel as much as anything. They allowed us to be as crazy and risky as we could possibly be as a writing staff. Kevin Feige really empowered me to take chances with the character and everything. So, in that sense, it reminded me of working on Rick & Morty."

Near the end of the hour, there's a really fun Easter Egg when Loki attempts to escape the TVA by retrieving the Tesseract, but makes an unexpected discovery when the unsuspecting receptionist Casey (Eugune Cordero) opens the drawer for him and not only hands back the Cosmic Cube, but also inadvertently reveals multiple Infinity Stones that are seemingly powerless in this realm - and often used by his co-workers as paperweights.

While that's just one big way Loki has been able to turn the Marvel Cinematic Universe on its head, revealing the TVA to be a force much more powerful than anything we've seen thus far, Waldron promises there's plenty more awesomeness to come as well as lots of Easter Eggs.

"I think it was really cool to take the world of the MCU - there’s literally ten years of history that have come before this and there’s so much weight on stuff like the Infinity Stones and everything and what I thought and what our writing team got really excited about was ‘Alright, how can we say that all of that stuff was basically just bullshit compared to what the TVA does?'

It’s all in service of just making the TVA, establishing them as a more and more formidable force for Loki to be running up against. So, there’s a lot of good opportunities for Easter Eggs and stuff within that."

Premature take: It’s only been one episode but I’d really like see this guy get his hangs on the F4 script.

Really enjoyed Herron’s direction too. Can Watts be replaced lol.

Nice to see that they're getting almost free reign. I'm sure they'd get their hand smacked if they tried to change anything major that's happened.

A decent first installment. I'm sure my highlights were different from other's, but definitely not a dud and it has room to grow.

Only what can happen does happen.

Maybe Loki will stay dead, but this Loki? Could become the next...i dunno, Watcher or something like that, sort of like Nick Fury in the comics.

@Doomsday8888 - my guess he will lead the TVA by the end of this show

This guy is a star writer and I hope he's involved in the MCU for a while.

The more I think about it, the more I liked that moment. It is indeed very telling of what the TVA is capable and I'm really interested in seeing how they got to a point where they could cancel out all magic (please don't tell me it's just runes).

it will be interesting to see where the TVA ranks among the Celestials and the Eternals... such juicy stuff is coming our way.
