Tyrese Gibson Says He's Still Up For A "Luke Cage" Movie

He also talks about his own comic creation "Mayhem" and says something very intriguing about another upcoming Marvel movie!

When MTV caught up with Tyrese Gibson during a recent “Transformers” press event, he shared some details about plans to create his own comic book series, “Mayhem,” as well as a potential "Luke Cage" movie and a part in "Captain America"!

“The energy from Comic-Con really did something to me,” Gibson told MTV News of what prompted him to try his hand at comics. “Instead of me sitting back and waiting on ‘Luke Cage’ to finally happen — which I’m still looking forward to doing once they get the script together — and instead of me waiting on ‘Captain America,’ which they were talking about me for, I’m going to create my own. And that’s what I did.”

“I’m not going to be one of those guys who’s a fake comic book guy. I don’t have a real legacy and history with comic books,” said Gibson. “I wanted to create my own and contribute to the legacy that already exists.”

“But I’m knocking at the door,” he added, “and I’m saying, ‘I got something special. Let me in.’”

Well, ill certainly be checking out "Mayhem". But i think the biggest news here is Gibson's Cap name drop. Is he talikng about an old rumor i never heard about? Or is he perhaps being considered for Falcon! Pretty unlikely if he is indeed going to play Luke Cage.

Anyway, let the speculation commence.

What if he plays the black Captain America that existed before Steve? Or maybe part of the movie is set in the current time instead of WWII and he has a cameo as Luke Cage. Marvel IS doing a great job of tying them all in now...

He sounds cool and like he has good intentions but "Mayhem" looks like crap along with his wooden acting. Cool guy though. Found this because of this article.

I like his additude, but I've never given a shit about Luke Cage. More power to him all the same.

"What if he plays the black Captain America that existed before Steve?"

What black C.A. before Steve? Am I alone in wondering WTF he's talking about? And even if their was, it wouldn't be Tyrese "LEFT CHEEK!" Gibson. I'm sure they could get a Will Smith, or someone with some range to him.

I saw this lol! I knew you'd put it on here! Cool!

Well its very good news me thinks, maybe they want to test the waters with CAGE first or he's just playing another character in CAPTAIN AMERICA? Lets not hope for the latter! ; )

if Marvel produces luke cage, then he may be appearing as luke cage in the first avenger: captain america movie as a street criminal.

then cap puts him in jail, and sometime later in the movie he gets out and approaches cap, only to surprise him and ask if he can join the avengers.

then cap says,"are you kidding?you just got outta the slammer"

but luke then proves him self in the avengers movie and they let him join as a reserve,at which time, the avengers are getting thier arse handed to them, and powerman shows up and lends a helping hand.

far fetched,indeed,but hell.

BillyBlack: Marvel ran a title a few years back called "Truth" about the REAL first Captain America: Isaah Bradley. He was among other black military recruets that were experimented upon during WWII, before they "perfected" the procedure that led to Steve Rogers' serum. It's a poignant story about racism, torture, bigotry, heroism, and patriotism.
You should check it out, it's pretty good. ;-)

He will probably be used like he was in Transformers. The token black character that says things like "DAAAAAMN" oR "That guy is a ASSSSSSHOLE!" I think they may have been his only lines in that movie come to think of it!

Thats the only thing iv seen him in so i dont really know what caliber of an actor he is, but he does seem wooden like Betty says.

Luke Cage is Power Man Minotauro! Hero for hire. He wasnt much in the early days but has become a pretty good character since Civil War. If they do make a movie, Iron Fist HAS to be in it!

Thanks adamant877

This is news to me. Sounds about right for the US government in the 1940s, I'm sure it's worth a read. I just get sick of the countless re-imaginations of classic characters. Next up is the Latino re-boot of Gotham's dark knight. LEEE's old buddy...

I've always felt Marvel had very weak black characters. There are the exceptions; Storm, War Machine, and of course Black Panther. I never liked the Falcon or Black Goliath and Luke Cage comes off as more of someone working the door at a night club than a superhero.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 6/23/2009, 6:26 PM
I really like Falcon and his recent appearences in Brubaker's run on Captin America have been great! Black Goliath was another great character and I was gutted when he was killed off in Civil War. You have to remember that there arent a lot of classic black characters because at the time that most of Marvel heroes were created (1960's) it probably wouldnt have been a popular decision to have a black Spider-Man etc!

It's all good. I couldn't remember the name of the storyline....just that it was really good. It seems like a stretch to have it in the first movie though...who knows.

Bring on Bat-Manuel!

Remember, Luke Cage started out as a petty crook working for a crime lord.

Maybe in Cap, Luke will be a bad guy turned good over the course of the film.

And you guys mentioned a Powerman and Iron Fist movie huh? Hmm.. I'm thinking Hulk Hogan as Iron Fist and Mr. T as Cage. Just kidding.

terry crews(chris's dad form everybody hates chris)would be a good luke cage. they need to write extra testosterone into the part because sometimes he comes off as kind of faggy...
Betty

Anil Rickly--Why not Rufus Sewel as Dr. Strange? I think it could work. He's a great actor with a touch of menace and old enough to have some seasoning.

TheAmbassador--Terry Crews is the shizzy!

Anil--Don't get me wrong, I love some Johnny Depp but let someone else have a job. He already is a bright shiny star. He could point at a lamp post and say, "I want to do a movie about a lamp post, pirate." and someone would develop it for him. Like Megan Fox, he can't have every role.

longbowhunter - 6/23/2009, 8:31 PM
Joshw24 you plead a good case. I understand what you mean about black characters and the times (60's). I guess I just wanna see more heros like T'Challa/Black Panther. He is so hard ass, and he's a damn king.

Everybody's forgetting that "The First Avenger: Captain America" is allegedly going to be a period piece set in WWII. And you know who was around during WWII? Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos. I'd say portraying a young Nick Fury could be what Tyrese is talking about.

Guys Tyrese can act.

He's been in more movies then just Transformers, and even had some lead roles.

Movies: Baby Boy, Four Brothers, Waist Deep. Just to name a few.

I think he will land Cage. Remeber John Singleton was attached to direct???? John was the guy to cast Tyrese in Baby Boy, his first movie. John also directed Four Brothers.

So if Marvel finally decides to make this, it could be huge!!
