MS. MARVEL Creator Sana Amanat Reveals Why Iman Vellani Is The Perfect Kamala Khan; New Still Released

If you're at all familiar with Kamala Khan's comic book adventures, you'll know she's a huge Captain Marvel fangirl. This is a trait that looks set to carry over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even if her Inhuman abilities do not) in Ms. Marvel, and a new still has now been released via Empire Online.

The image takes us to what looks a lot like "AvengerCon," and we see Kamala (Iman Vellani) alongside her best friend Bruno (Matt Lintz). They're suited up as Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner, respectively.

Ms. Marvel creator Sana Amanat - who was heavily involved in the Disney+ series - tells the site what it was like to meet Vellani over Zoom during her audition. "She showed me every corner of her room, and it was covered with Avengers," she recalls. "Then she said, 'Oh wait, I’m not done,' opened up her closet, and there was more Marvel everywhere."

Amanat went on to reiterate that Ms. Marvel "isn’t your traditional Avenger," explaining that "she’s not as slick and suave as some superheroes. It’s not like when Captain America throws his shield and it comes back. She’s all over the place. I’m excited for people to get to know her."

"[Iman] gave me a list of feedback on every single Marvel movie," the comic book writer and producer recalled with a laugh. "Kevin Feige is like her Carol Danvers."

We're certainly intrigued to see what this character brings to the table when she makes her debut, though we know big things are already planned. Vellani has shot her next MCU role in The Marvels, a movie that will see the teenager team up with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau.

Ms. Marvel arrives on Disney+ on June 8.

She's not even the real Ms Marvel from the comics. No embiggining powers. Discount green lantern.

@Goldboink - I'm not a racist so I had no issue with that. This is about the characters actually abilities.

For my part I am less concerned with the mechanics of the powers than I am about the character, the story and the meaning behind it. Folks sometimes get lost in the minutiae and forget what actually matters.

Like most folks I have never read one of these books so maybe I'm not the best case, or maybe I am the best case. Sometimes changes are necessary for a property to succeed in a three dimensional space and sometimes things just don't work for the story. It seems to me that the revised powers stemming from some kind of family heirloom rather than terrigen mist might add some additional meaning and emotion to the whole thing.

@Goldboink - nah you're overthinking it and getting lost in the minutia. This is all about Mr Fantastic. Her embiggening powers are legit her powers. Not the case in this show.

the origin of her powers will probably tie heavily into the plot for the Marvels movie. If so, could make her story even more impactful for the other 2.

I understand there's a lot of people not liking the change on her super powers, I'm actually more intrigued cause i wanna see how it pans out in the show and like someone else commented before me, the change could actually be related to The Marvels, so im more intrigued by that.

Show looks lovely and i'm really looking forward to it.

I'm least excited about this than anything else Marvel has created.

While it's true they have taken quite the detour in Kamala's abilities the trailer was very nice and upbeat in the way they depicted this teenage hero's high school which we haven't seen since 2017 with Peter in Homecoming so in that way, I am not that much turned off from the show yet.

Looking forward to it and the lead really looks like she's channeling Kamala's best traits.

As someone who's only read a small(ish) number of Ms Marvel comics, you can tell they're touching on the majority of what you'd want in a first adaptation of her (family, teen drama, religion, fangirling, superhero hijinks, etc). The only obvious change is the power set, and even that doesn't seem to be too much of a departure in most cases because energy projection can mimic many of the same properties of her embiggening powers.

Amanat was probably like this:

It is nice that Marvel was able to cast a fan tho. Can't imagine how much she is loving life right now
