Bad News as FX's Powers Will Undergo Redevelopment and Reshoots

A source for The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the comic book based television show will have to be retooled after executives saw a finished version of the pilot.

Let me start by saying that lots of shows get retooled after their pilots have been shown to executives, so it's not the end of the line for FX's Powers. Although, it's not good news either. The pilot is used as a test to determine if the show should be picked up, and how many episodes to order. And when a retooling of a show is required that means some or all of the cast could be out the door. Or, it could be as simple as adding a character to change the dynamic of the show.

As of right now the show has Jason Patric (Lost Boys)as the lead playing Detective Christian Walker. Playing the role of Walker’s new partner, Deena Pilgrim, is Lucy Punch (Bad Teacher, Dinner for Schmucks). And the girl in the pink dress in those T-Mobile commercials, Carly Foulkes, is playing the superhero, Retro Girl. Carly was expected to be a big part of the pilot as she was playing the first victim to be investigated by Detective Walker and Detective Pilgrim.

The Hollywood Reporter
Outlaw had been pitted against FX's other pilot option, comic book adaptation Powers. The waiting game carried on care of the network's desire to see the latter's special effects, but after seeing a finished product the network has requested similar retoolings, according to sources.

Powers, a Sony TV production, is based on the long-running Image/Icon comic series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming is a police procedural with supernatural element. Jason Patric stars as Christian Walker, a cop who works in the Powers division of the police force and deals with crimes involving those endowed with special abilities.

Deadline
FX has passed on its Nashville-set drama pilot Outlaw Country while keeping its other pilot, Powers, alive. The project, based on the comic book of the same name, will undergo redevelopment and reshoots.

The studio realizes the potential: a CSIzed superhero show. That's why they're still going through with it. At least they care to do whatever to make it what they believe to be a good series. I myself am excited. I have the first volume tradeback and I love it. I've been waiting for this for a while.

this cast is boring and seems dull to watch..i don't see anything on either resume to get me interested, so was hoping some footage would. 'appears that's not the case. which is a shame, as this show should be a breakout success for comic books on TV per the source material.

@write , brian michael bendis doesn't have a good resume? one of the best comic book writers of all time. the show was probably very close to source and the lame execs said no way, the comic was awesome, really intense and funny.

This happens all the time. Very few pilots nail the feel of the show on the first try, but clearly Powers needs a little work. I hope they don't change too much from the comic, which was awesome. I hope this show succeeds so that it can open the door for a 'Gotham Central' show one day.

@BatSlam
hm? I was complimenting BMB and the comic...I'm a big fan of both....I meant the cast for the show (e.g. Jason Patric instead of the rumored Kyle Chandler) I find dull and uninspiring. I think the source material is fantastic and totally could be adapted for quality TV, especially cable.
to blame the execs? eh, that's a tough on. FX has done The Shield and Rescue Me and Justified (among others) so it's hard to call that a shy or skittish network..

With Bendis' dialogue, scripts stood to shoot at 3.5 hours each....Just a guess ;)

I would love to see what the executives saw. Chances are it's great. The suits just think they know what the public wants, so they are changing it to be more like everything else.
I understand the necessary evil that these execs are, but its a shame all the great stuff people never get to see because of them.

@write, sorry, i wrote that while i was laying in bed trying not to fall asleep, i was reading a book, but my eyes started to drift and i wanted to finish the chapter, i came on here for a minute to wake me up but i dont think i read all of your post before either. Sorry dude. (I was to tired to actually finish the chapter last night as well unfortunately). I dont know why i said anything about the execs, i like most things fx puts out, comedy or drama. I was a little out of it last night. I can't wait for this show though, hopefully it will be put on and stay somewhat close to source. I can actually see the people they cast in these rolls playing the live action version on the comic characters. They should get Kristen Bell to play retro girl version 2.
