The comic book version of Secret Invasion was a massive event that kicked off with shape-shifting Skrulls replacing many of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in an effort to take control of the planet. From there, all-out war followed, with a full-blown invasion taking place (which, believe it or not, was ultimately stopped by Norman Osborn).
All signs point to the Disney+ TV series being much smaller in scale, following Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury as he looks to stop the invasion from ever happening in the first place.
However, we clearly shouldn't underestimate the show's scale if this newly surfaced plot synopsis is anything to go by. "Secret Invasion is a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos," reads the streamer's official description, "characters who first met in Captain Marvel."
"The crossover event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years."
Does Secret Invasion being referred to as a "crossover event series" point to cameos and major links to other movies and TV shows? We'd have to guess so, especially based on some recent remarks from star Cobie Smulders (who plays Maria Hill).
"I mean when we think about the world that they're in, the Skrulls have been around since we saw them in Captain Marvel," she told Phase Zero at Comic-Con last weekend. "They've been building in numbers. And are they good? Are they bad? We're gonna find out in the show. But there's certainly a lot of them and so it sort of turns into this, 'Can I trust you? Can I not trust you?' And it's really cool. It's certainly fraught with a lot of tension."
We're definitely intrigued to see how much of an impact this show has on the wider MCU, especially with it coming right at the start of Phase 5 (and prior to The Marvels being released in theaters).
Unfortunately, with Kang the Conqueror set to take centre stage in The Multiverse Saga, we can't help but wonder if Skrulls won't be the major threat they once were in the comic books. We'll have to wait and see, though, and it feels like Marvel Studios probably has a lot of surprises in store for us. That may include the MCU debut of Union Jack based on a recent rumour.
Secret Invasion is set to premiere on Disney+ early next year.
