Hayley Atwell Shares Her Hopes For Captain Carter If Her Story Is Continued In Future WHAT IF...? Seasons

Should Captain Carter have a key role in Marvel's What If...? season 3 or do you think it's time to focus on different characters?

Captain Carter was a significant focus of season 2 of Marvel's What If...? after appearing in several episodes during the previous season. If that trend continues, Captain Carter will be a very integral part of What If..? season 3.

We'll caution that there hasn't been news on whether the third season of the Disney+ drama will center on Carter, but if it does, Atwell has revealed where she would like to see the alternate reality version of Steve Rogers' dance partner head.

Atwell stated, "You take the fact that she loves what she does, and yet she still has this weight of responsibility in her shoulders. She will always love Steve, but she will be able to move past grief to have a deeper sense of purpose and who she is. And I think just that we can keep developing her based on what the audience love about her."

In terms of Captain Carter's future, Atwell does not believe her What If...? counterpart would build her own Illuminati, a repeat of the path followed by the version of the character that appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"I think because of the nature of the incredible spider web of possibility and all these parallel worlds, I think there is a freedom there to not get necessarily too attached to one thread," Atwell told Comic Book, voicing her belief that an Illuminati membership is not an inevitable future for her What If...? character.

"I think she was also fulfilling a particular role in that moment in Doctor Strange, where it was quite much more somber. It was much more serious and earnest and the setup of the gag of going, 'I could do this all day,' and then immediately getting cut in half by a frisbee essentially is a fun, silly gag thing."

Marvel's What If...? season 3 is confirmed to be in development but there's currently no word on when it will be released.

Up next for Atwell is another voice role, portraying Lara Croft in Netflix's upcoming Tom Raider animated series.

The second season of What If....? currently has an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.7/10 based on 22 reviews.

According to the site's consensus among reviewers, "What If...? may not add much to the larger MCU narrative, but surprising takes on beloved characters and some of the best action sequences in the entire franchise make for engaging viewing."

So was season 2 more consistent than season 1?

@dracula - season 2 was basically CAPTAIN CARTER: AND THE DIAL OF FEMINISM

@dracula - I never paid attention to details like that, but just enjoyed the stories. I remember liking both seasons equally.

@dracula - Honestly it was the same. Some good episodes, but meh overall. The series is just way too restrictive for a What If series. Everything is basically 'What If the MCU was ever so slightly different?' rather than exploring the Marvel multiverse. It's never more apparent than in Season 1's Marvel Zombies and Season 2's 1602. Spider-verse this show ain't.

...it's too bad she lasted about 5 minutes in live action, what a waste of the character!

@incredibleTalk - that entire movie was a waste.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Captain Carter show (something which parts of What If S2 already should've been), possibly even leading into Multiverse of Madness. Think it'd it will put that movie in a different context if it turns out it's the same character.

What If... will be the next thing I start after I finish "Fool Me Once."
All kinds of good stuff out there to stream.

Don't worry Haley, it will. I like the character and her portrayal of that character. Guaranteed we'll see her in live action in Secret Wars, and I'd expect Kahhori as well.

Anytime I think of Captain Carter I think of her getting cut in half then I think of Walk Hard and have a good laugh.

No thanks, it's time for someone to get the spotlight. She had enough in season 2...

No thanks. Captain Carter was interesting for like an episode or two, but beyond that, she was just female Steve. There wasn't anything uniquely Peggy about her stories, other than I guess the romance angle with Steve. But we've long established that romance.

They should have explored more of a Captain Britain angle with her, rather than rehashing Steve stories with a few minor changes.

I'm up for a Disney+ series with her as either Agent or Captain Carter. S2 and that cliffhanger left me wanting more.

They're really trying to milk her and Steve's love story for all its worth but in animated form.

How did Hayley Atwell's career, and Marvel Studios' trajectory both go so horribly wrong that she is now trying to be the main focus of an animated, internet-streaming-only, anthology? How the phuck did we get here?

People wanna talk about rights for women and better treatment, and yet is something that she is actually looking forward to. I hate to remind the class, but Hollywood, for all of its Vanguard and Blackrock-induced hiring practices, still has a problem hiring women, of any color, over 30. The second you hit that age, let's see how quick they are to give you a leading role over the age of 30.

When did they hire Brie Larson again? How old was the black costar chick from The Marvels when she debuted? How old is Iman Vellani? How old was Scarlet Johannson when they hired her? Even the mighty Marvel, and Disney, still here to sexism regarding women when it comes to age. Downey's old ass was well over 40 when he got the gig for Iron Man in 2006 or 2007. Sam Jackson's old as phuck, but is playing a black, broken-down Nick Fury way back in 2007.

Progress my ass.

I wish they just did MARVELS. A Multiverse dimension which uses modern practical effects/cgi in a retro timeline.

Imagine Big Fish storytelling, Jack Kirby cinematogray and Alex Ross costume design/ visuals.

No continuation to any current timeline, just a retro version of ultimate MARVEĹ on film.

Hayley and her storyline is good... But it just hasn't resonated that well with everyone in terms of popularity and success. I mean, everyone likes it, but no one loves it.. or is super eager towards the next installment of Capt. Carter. Some IPs Marvel has to see the writing on the wall and move on from.
