WHAT IF? Now Confirmed To Include Characters And Concepts From Marvel Studios-Produced SPIDER-MAN Movies

Leaked plans for an upcoming wave of LEGO minifigures indicated that Spider-Man could factor into What If?, and those plans have seemingly been officially confirmed by Disney. Find more details here...

LEGO is reportedly planning a new series of mystery minifigures based on Marvel Studios' Disney+ TV shows, and it was thanks to those we learned about Spider-Man's possible inclusion in What If?

Bizarrely, the premise of that episode appears to be "What if Steve Rogers became Spider-Man?" This could mean that the Super Soldier Serum and however the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Peter Parker gained his powers (which has never been explored on screen) will be linked in some way.

Whatever the case may be, Spidey's involvement has seemingly been confirmed in the latest issue of Disney's D23 Magazine.

Shared by The Direct, it's said that Spider-Man: Far From Home is among the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies the upcoming animated series will be pulling from. It's too soon to say what that means for the show, but we probably shouldn't be surprised that Sony Pictures was on board with the concept, as their relationship with Disney has really solidified since that brief parting of the ways.

There were once some pretty wild rumours that Tom Holland might lend his voice to a Peter who became Hawkeye, so this trip into the Multiverse is clearly about to take us to some crazy places.

What would be really cool is if What If? ends up tying into Spider-Man: No Way Home, somehow...

I’ll give this show a watch but it seems like all the episodes we know about so far are just “What if X character was X character instead”. It seems lazy and squanders the potential of the series.

@MovieMonster - Part of the problem is that the MCU doesn't have enough characters and storylines to play this game very well. Especially since they're trying to keep the marquee stars and marquee brands in the focus.

The comics would do something like "What if the heroes had died and the villains had to fight Thanos" and a team of Iron Monger, Whiplash, Loki (King of Asgard), Red Skull, etc. doing an Endgame (with all the twists and turns that villains offer). But that wouldn't feature any of the names (except Loki) that Marvel is still invested in.

I'm sure there will be good episodes and even the lazy ones will have something interesting going on in them, but it doesn't have the kind of expansive feel that the what if comics did.

Even if they aren't very creative, the show could be a way to explore things that never got to happen (what if the Avengers never broke up and we get to see "the good ending" of Infinity War, what if Spider-Man had joined the Avengers and we get to just see the team bonding in some down time, etc.) The ability to just fill in some emotional cracks that the movies leave would be great.

@MovieMonster - Yeah, I agree. And the fact that all these different versions of the characters are supposedly going to team up for an alternate reality Infinity Gauntlet story just makes it even worse.

I was really hoping each episode would be its own stand alone story in a different timeline where everything played out exactly like it did in the MCU up untik something different happened. Like a character dying at a critical moment. Or a particular villain winning from one of the movies. Then seeing the ramifications of that one difference.

For instance, What If....Tony Stark never escaped from that cave?

Whiplash never becomes a villain because he was fueled entirely on revenge. So with Tony gone he has no reason to cause the events of Iron Man 2. The Avengers form without an Iron Man, but because of that, no one flies the nuke into space to stop the Chitauri in the original Avengers movie. The Chitauri end up winning and taking over Earth and Thanos goes on to collect the Infinity Gems unopposed.

Something like that would be great. What it sounds like we're getting is not what any What If fan would have expected, I don't think.

I've got to say that the premises of What If feel pretty lazy. Like Feige was sitting in his office just pointing at posters. "What if he was him? What if she was him? What if they were them?"

Get ready for season two. What if... Couch was Lamp?

@Spock0Clock - I am F*&#ing geared up for What if... Couch was Lamp? Are we sitting on a light bulb? Reading with a night cushion clipped to our headboards? The possibilities are endless!

What if we get some more creativity with the What if stories?

Character swaps just seems lazy writing to me. It might have been more interesting if the series was used for true what ifs like what if Loki hadn’t killed Coulson or what if Thor had taken Thanos head the first time or what if it was Cap who went to get the soul stone and met the Red Skull again, the list is endless. What if Hank Pym had created Ultron, oops he actually did ....

I hope What-If? does well so that Marvel can make more animated series that appeal to older audiences. I'd love a Squadron Supreme miniseries that's 100% faithful to the 12-issue series from the '80s.

I mean, it's Marvel & Disney... I can't imagine they looked at this whole thing and didn't see for themselves that it was mostly - if not all - swapping of monikers between characters.

I know they aren't ALL swaps (i.e. the Zombie episode) but I'm kinda scared now that the teams behind this show didn't feel it was all the same thing because "what if T'Challa was kidnapped as a child by Yondu & the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill?" doesn't sound as bad or bland as "what if Black Panther was Star-Lord?"

I mean, I'm gonna be there for every episode regardless tho 🤷🏻‍♂️

Damn, the comics had some great concepts. These stories all kinda suck. "What if ____was_____" is cool like once and if it were like Rocket Raccoon as Hulk

So many episodes are focusing on one character becoming a different character because they are showing their origins before putting together that multiverse hopping Avengers team we heard about a couole months ago. They are taking the MCU approach and showinf how they all became someone different, then they'll form a team to deal with an alternate reality Infinith Gauntlet story.

It sucks, but it seems very clear to me thats what they are doing

GeneralZod - 5/25/2021, 4:57 PM
@CorndogBurglar - agreed. All they have to do is use the first 50 or so issues of What If? As source material.

A lot of these sound boring. Peggy as Cap and T'Challa as StarLord are the only switcheroos that sound remotely interesting though.
