WHAT IF...? Season 2 Trailer Introduces A New Team Of Avengers And Brings Back Some Familiar Faces

Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for What If...? season 2, and with that comes official news on the show's premiere date and unique release schedule! These episodes look like quite the ride...

The Watcher will finally return in season 2 of Marvel Studios' What If...? when the animated series begins streaming on Disney+ on December 22. And in the spirit of the holiday season, it's been confirmed today that we'll be invited to unwrap a new episode nightly for nine nights.

Just like next January's Echo will boast a unique release schedule by dropping all five episodes on the same day, it seems Marvel Studios is taking a similarly unexpected approach to sharing this show. Whether this is testing the water for future streaming titles is unclear, but releasing a new instalment nighly over the festive period is a fun and welcome move (we've also been waiting long enough that weekly drops would be borderline infuriating).

In the trailer, we see brand new teams of Avengers, a Christmastime adventure in Avengers Tower, Hela's team-up with Wenwu, and familiar moments from several previous MCU movies, albeit with a new spin.

Perhaps most intriguing, though, is the fact Thanos is shown battling Captain America during Avengers: Infinity War, only to later clash with Captain Carter. Strange Supreme is also back, and it feels like we're in for a suitably bonkers and epic ride with this second batch of episodes.

Will they have an impact on the wider Multiverse Saga? That remains to be seen.

"Season two of 'What If...?' continues the journey as The Watcher guides viewers through the vast multiverse, introducing brand new and familiar faces throughout the MCU," reads a brief synopsis also released today. "The series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles."

"Featuring fan-favorite characters this season like Nebula, Hela and Happy Hogan, episodes are directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews with executive producer AC Bradley as head writer."

Check out the first trailer and poster for What If...? season 2 below.

While not confirmed, we have good reason to believe these are the titles of each episode and the order they'll be released in:

• What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps? (December 22)
• What If... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes? (December 23)
• What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas? (December 24)
• What If... Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster? (December 25)
• What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper? (December 26)
• What If... The Avengers Assembled in 1602? (December 27)
• What If... Hela found the Ten Rings? (December 28)
• What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World? (December 29)
• What If... Strange Supreme Intervened? (December 30)

As someone who considers Season 1 a bottom 5 MCU project, this looks MUCH better.

@OmegaDaGrodd - Totally agree. The first season’s animation was off putting alongside only having 1 or 2 eps I actually found interest in. This trailer looks more polished.

@JustAWaffle - I was really hoping they'd diversify the animation style for this, similar to VISIONS, but they at least refined the style and made it less janky

MCU remixed!
Can't wait. Will be fun watching this over the holidays. Smart move

Seeing Steve Roger's in action even in cartoon form makes me miss his presence in the MCU so bad...

I tend to go with the flow of the MCU for the most part. But them retiring Steve is by far their biggest mistake I'd say. Closey followed by the killing of Tony and Nat. Not that I'm hoping for a soft reboot, but if that gets those characters back into the MCU then I'm down.

@RedFury - think they all, especially Evans, wanted to leave their characters on a high not.

That said, I could see Old Man Rogers return as can I see the multiverse bring in young versions of Tony Stark and Black Panther.

@bkmeijer1 - I have a feeling you're right. Which as an actor I totally get wanting to move on from the role so they can spread their wings.

But this is when they should have just allowed recasting of characters. As long as the person coming-in to take over is quality, I feel like the transition would have been fine. We've seen it work countless times in other franchises. I just wish they would have given it a shot.

Bringing in an old man Roger's would have been the nice in-between to that for sure. Keeps Evans in the role, but it would be minor enough that he doesn't have to do much of the heavy lifting.

@RedFury - if they're recasting actors, now is the time. Like I said, the multiverse is a good way to bring them in.

They're not in conflict with the MCU versions' arcs, but they are around to meet other superheroes and such.
RedFury
RedFury - 11/15/2023, 8:49 PM
@bkmeijer1 - it really is the perfect time. It not only gives them the reasoning to capitalize on the current plot threads of the multiverse, but it also does away with having to just ignore the fact that it's a different actor. Two birds with one stone scenario there.

@RedFury - three birds if you count they can just start over with character arc. A new Tony Stark doesn't have to continue the arc of RDJ's arc either.

And that's kinda why I thought it was kinda odd they brought in a kid T'Challa in Wakanda Forever. Maybe he won't be Black Panther though, and a new adult one will arrive from the multiverse.

I’m honestly excited for most of the episodes!!.

This certainly looks like a step up from season 1. They had the entire multiverse of possibilities and one of the best they could come up with the first 9 was that Party Thor episode? One of the worst things ever produced my Marvel Studios.

Also hopefully they'll tidy up the timelines this season so it actually makes sense in the context of the wider MCU.
EskimoJ
EskimoJ - 11/15/2023, 1:56 PM
@CLTMAN29 - What issues are there with the timeline in a show that talks about infinite possibilities?
CLTMAN29
CLTMAN29 - 12/11/2023, 7:38 AM
@EskimoJ - T’Challa gets abducted in 1988, ten years later puts us in 2008, when he’s recreating the scene in Guardians which is in 2014, fine. Then he returns to Earth and there’s a teenage Shuri how she appears in main MCU…? That’s just one of many. T’Challa getting abducted also somehow results in caps shield ending up with the Collector before he was even discovered in the ice? The list goes on

Honestly beginning to wonder if a better approach to the multiverse saga wouldn’t have been to have a “What If…” movie or show each year to get people used to the idea of a Marvel Multiverse, then have the main storyline converge into Secret Wars with the mix of the What If characters
SpiderParker
SpiderParker - 11/15/2023, 12:59 PM
@Oberlin4Prez - That would have probably been good, I don't know why they haven't tried to go the Ultimate Comics route with some of the projects yet.
