What If...?'s first season was originally going to be 10 episodes long, but thanks to the pandemic, it was shortened to 9 (the second season is now also expected to run for the same length). There are just two instalments left before this first batch of episodes concludes, and Head Writer A.C. Bradley teased what's next for the animated series during a recent interview with Deadline.
"Season 2 is a lot of fun," the executive producer tells the trade. "The training wheels come off, and we get to do a little bit weirder, wilder. There’s one episode which is probably the closest to my own personality I’ve ever written. It’s heartfelt. It’s full of action and bad ‘90s clothing choices."
That mention of the 1990s is definitely interesting, and could be an indication that we'll be revisiting the events of Captain Marvel. After all, that movie is the most time we've spent in that decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it's also possible we could head to a timeline where Howard and Maria Stark weren't assassinated by The Winter Soldier. Time will tell on that front.
Elsewhere in the interview, Bradley confirmed that the episode pushed from season 1 to season 2 is a full-blown comedy. "We did have another comedy episode in the season, more in the pure comedy vein, which is the one that has been pushed to season 2 due to COVID production issues." For those who feel there's already been too much comedy in What If...?, that might be a relief to hear.
Following last week's cliffhanger and lots of crossover teases in the trailers, it's certainly going to be pretty interesting to see what Marvel Studios delivers over the next two weeks.
As for season 2 of What If...?, we're anticipating it arriving sometime in 2022.
