Marvel Studios held a virtual press conference for What If...? yesterday, and ComicBookMovie.com was on hand to bring you plenty of exciting highlights from the global event.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige may not have been present, but executive producer Brad Winderbaum (a Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran) was there to drop some hints about the future of this animated series. While ten episodes will be released on Disney+ this year, plans are already in place for a second season, and it seems Captain Carter will play a key role!
"We realized early on in development as we were starting to get [AC Bradley's] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important," he started. "Not more important than the rest, but [one who] had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter."
"And we realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure," Winderbaum added.
Despite the fact that he'd later describe What If...? as an "anthology series," it's clear there are bigger plans in place for Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, especially if she ends up developing a relationship with The Watcher (who, despite only being there to observe, has frequently interfered in the comic books).
Something tells us this is going to tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but even if an appearance is off the table there, we wouldn't be shocked if there are some live-action plans.
What If...? premieres on Disney+ on August 11.
