GAME OF THRONES Showrunners David Benioff And D.B. Weiss Sign Exclusive 9-Figure Mega Deal With Netflix

Hollywood's dynamic duo of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an exclusive deal with Netflix. According to Deadline, the deal, which is reportedly in the "9-figure range," will see them write, produce, and direct new series and films for the streaming service.

Netflix confirmed to Deadline it had won the deal but did not share specific numbers regarding the contract. Sources claim the deal is for five years and worth as much as $300 million.

"We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

Benioff and Weiss also shared excitement in joining Netflix.

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber," the duo said. "We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

Benioff and Weiss are best known as the creators of HBO's Game of Thrones, the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series "A Song of Ice and Fire." The television series ran for almost a decade and spanned eight seasons. While Game of Thrones earned numerous awards and accolades during its time on air, including 47 Primetime Emmy Awards, the final season was met with mixed reception from critics and fans alike. Questionable creative decisions and a condensed story, thanks in part to the season's shorter overall runtime, led to a divisive final season that believe was brought on by the showrunner's desire to move on to other projects. In February 2018, it was announced that Benioff and Weiss would write and produce a new series of Star Wars films for Disney.

Deadline reports that the duo intend to fulfill their "several" remaining obligations, including the next Star Wars trilogy. They also wrote a Kurt Cobain project for Universal and are poised to adapt the prison escape story Dirty White Boys for Fox/Disney.

With Netflix facing stiffer competition in the streaming space, including Disney launching its own service (Disney+) in November, it's no surprise that Netflix is willing to shell out big bucks for whatever big Hollywood names are out there. The question now is whether or not the final season of Game of Thrones has tarnished their reputation or if they can still create a series or movie(s) worthy of attracting millions of subscribers for Netflix.

After that abysmal GOT ending, I am not happy with these news at all...

Definitely nothing on Netflix is exiting me like the Disney+ Marvel and Star Wars stuff, or the Amazon Lord of the Rings stuff. Netflix is pretty low on the list these days. Mindhunter and GLOW are the only things that keep me clicking on NF.

Trolls (1%): Soiling their collective diapers.

Everyone else (99%): Let's give them a fair shake.

Spoiled and entitled people will never be satisfied. Wah, the story didn't fit my fan theory. That's what the majority feels anyway or at least that's all that can be made out from behind the nerd rage and tears. If these "fans" made movies, then it would suuuuuuuuuuuuuck otherwise, it will be just fine (as most people feel). There should be a litmus test for Internet access.

@DoctorCranium - And this right here is an exact example of how true trolls create having true critique of something impossible. The "majority" of people were not mad because their little fan theories were incorrect. No in fact the majority were mad because the execution of the plot they decided to go with was absolutely butchered, complete with character acting out of character, plot based teleportation, and extremely rushed character arcs, all topped off by some of the least satisfying deaths for beloved/hated characters have ever seen.

[frick] the theories they [frick]ed up their own storyline with a level of flair that will be long remembered.

@DoctorCranium - your an idiot if you think people were being entitled because the last season was actually bad compared to what came before. They make bran king, because he apparently has the best story... Such a good story we didn't even need to see him for a whole season earlier. Also that's not a valid reason for being king. That's literally one of the many issues people had. No one would be upset if he became king IF it made any sense, which it didn't.

@DoctorCranium - Hey, as long as they can find another great IP to adapt they should be good, it's the thought of them coming up with their own stories that scares me.

@LongMayHeReign - I thought HBO cut the season to 6 episodes due to budget before finding out that HBO was willing to foot the bill for more 10 episode seasons, and it was D&D who chose to cram it all in such a short span of episodes. Sounded like they just wanted to get it done with, which is a shame.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 8/8/2019, 1:03 PM
@tmp3 - Not only did they cram 10 episodes into 6 but GRRM said that he had enough material to go at least 2 more full 10 episode seasons.

I brought this up to a dude on here a couple weeks back and he said the actors were probably ready to move on and that it forced D&D to cram. Now tell me if I'm wrong but other than Lena I haven't seen any members of the season cast get roles in anything of significance, I'm pretty sure they would've been game for more seasons.

@LongMayHeReign - 100%, the company was willing to pay more, the actors were ready and GRRM said there was more in this world. D&D's decision to end it all in 6 episodes was a mistake

@LongMayHeReign - I believe HBO asked for 10 episodes for the last two but D&D said no because they wanted to get on to their Star Wars projects.
Actually, the head of HBO programming noted that he ideally wanted 10 episodes for 10 seasons and was horrified that the show was being truncated the way it was, but ultimately reached a compromise with D&D.
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 8/8/2019, 1:42 PM
@tmp3 - I will honestly always believe this no matter what anyone wants to tell me, but I truly believe D&D wanted to end the show quickly so that they would not get exposed as poor writers without source material to literally "open book test" the shit. And when Lucasfilm came calling they hastened their exit.

I would say I'm shocked that Netflix signed them to this deal having seen how they butchered season 8 and are now hated for it, either one of 2 things happened here.

A) They were in agreement prior to the airing of season 8 and wanted to announce right after, but due to the backlash they waited for things to die down.

B) They give zero [frick]s about the quality and just want to pimp the name as "From the creator of Game of Thrones"

Either way this shit is dumb as [frick]!
LongMayHeReign
LongMayHeReign - 8/8/2019, 1:47 PM
@Battabing - 100% agree they just wanted to get the [frick] out of there, but a lot of people can't read the writing on the wall so they call those voicing their gripes trolls to lessen the blow.

Similar thing happened with Captain Marvel, the true critiques were so drowned out by the anti-SJW hate brigade screaming about forced agenda that everyone got dumped into the same troll basket.

@DoctorCranium - "Let's give them a fair shake"

People gave them a fair shake by watching the final season of GOT. It disappointed everyone. So there's no obligation for anyone to give these guys another chance.
SerKurtWagner
SerKurtWagner - 8/8/2019, 2:55 PM
@DoctorCranium - For most, it's not a matter of theories not panning out. It's a matter of two dudes getting bored and driving a beloved TV show off the tracks because they were too disinterested in finishing it right.

Two dudes who had complete disregard for the source material, stripping away the magic and complex themes to focus on gore and sex.

Two dudes who can't even be bothered to understand their own fictional world (Making a two week journey in two days, labeling Sunspear "Dorne", because it was clear they didn't give a crap about that kingdom or its characters)

Two dudes who were too prideful to let someone else take over when they wanted out and arbitrarily killed off characters if the actors questioned their decisions.

I can go on and on and on. They simply aren't people worth supporting.
