DEXTER: Luna Lauren Velez Shares Her Thoughts On The Revival And Possibly Returning As LaGuerta (Exclusive)

Dexter star Luna Lauren Velez talks to us about Showtime's upcoming revival, while also sharing her thoughts on the final season & how she'd like to see María LaGuerta return to haunt the serial killer...

Dexter ended in 2013, and to say fans of the series were disappointed with the finale would be an understatement. The show clearly wasn't at its best during those final couple of years, anyway, but search for any ranking of the all-time worst TV finales, and we're confident you'll come across a picture of Michael C. Hall dressed as a lumberjack!

Last year, we learned that a 10-episode limited series is heading our way which it's hoped will redeem the show and provide a vastly more satisfying ending for the serial killer.

Luna Lauren Velez played María LaGuerta in Dexter, and came close to putting the blood spatter analyst behind bars before being murdered by his sister, Deb. When we caught up with the actress to discuss her role in new action movie Rogue Hostage, we asked for her thoughts on the revival and what she hopes to see from the series when it returns.

"I think the last season left a lot of people hungry for a better resolution," Velez admitted. "It’s great that they’re bringing it back. People really want to see something that feels more satisfying for them in terms of what becomes of Dexter. I’m not sure everyone’s okay with the serial killer just getting away with it. I have no idea what happens, but I hope it will be fulfilling [Laughs]. That’s all I can say."

When we suggested it would be fun to see Dexter haunted by LaGuerta, she added: "I need to see all of his foes come back. It’s a very interesting thing to me that all the women in the show were killed. Rita, Maria, Debs...all the women died. I think they need to come back and ask him some questions. Wouldn’t that be awesome?"

It would indeed. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any original cast members outside of Hall will return for this new season, and as LaGuerta's story reached its end in that penultimate batch of episodes, the chances of Velez getting the opportunity to reprise the role are slim. We'd definitely be on board with the idea of her and other former cast members coming back to haunt Dexter, though!

Honestly I don't see anyone from the original cast appearing again, except maybe possibly Harry at the most.

What I would have preferred is that we learn everything that happened after the season 4 finale was actually a fantasy scenario Dexter thinks about over and over while in prison, because in actually he went to prison to confessing to the murder of Rita, which then opened Dexter to investigation and thats when they found his blood slides and stuff and put him away. While in prison Dexter goes through all the steps he would have taken if he was free and it all leads to Deb dead, and his family destroyed, so he decides to stay in prison and accept his multiple life sentences.

Cut to almost a decade later present day, Deb is still alive as is anyone who died after season 4, so basically we can have the entire cast back for this final arc, which would deal with a Dexter copy cat, so Deb has to work with Dexter who she hasn't visited at all since his confession, and she has to finally accept him for his dark ways in order to stop this copycat. It would make Dexter have to face accountability for what he does on a number of levels. And if 8t all still ends with Deb dead, that means Dexter's sacrifice was pointless, Deb still died and his family was still destroyed.

There could be a lot of cool ways to spin it. Idk if I really want Dexter Morgan in a completely new setting surrounded by completely new side characters. The show had its chemistry. No Masuka? No Deb? No Batista? No Quinn? The supporting cast was the heart of the show. Idk if its gonna work for me with just Dexter.

@ElricReturns - so he imagines years of taking out all these ridiculous killers, his sister secretly having a crush on him, and leaving everything to become a lumberjack?

@Origame - yeah... I know... almost as dumb as the actual ending we got. I'm fully aware it's zany, but not uncommon for how crazy the books get. In the books he actually talks to his dark passenger who has its own identity, and Dexter is very methodical and almost a Batman level strategist in how he obsessive plans and over thinks things, usually to his dismay because something unexpected always happens. In the books Dexter also feels somewhat piloted or at least manipulated by his Dark Passenger so Dexter never feels 100% in control.

The book Dexter 100% would confess and spend his years looked up thinking of what would happen if he was still free. I could even see him using his dark passenger to help him fantasize or day dream about killing people just to keep his need to kill slightly satisfied. I could definitely think of clever ways to spin it into the character.

I'm also not a professional idea man, and am fully aware better ideas could be done. I'm just not hyped about this angle we are getting so far. I wanna be back in Miami, because that setting IS Dexter. The music, the color pallet, how hot it always feels when they film outside... all that added to the chemistry of the show. The show was never fully on the shoulders of the character Dexter. He's the main character, not the only character.

@Origame - plus I didn't write the shitty last 4 seasons, I'm just trying to explain them away. Maybe them being a fantasy Dexter uses to keep himself "sane" while locked in solitary confinement serving out multiple life sentences is odd, but it would also explain how tonally different and bad the writing was in seasons 5-8 if it was really just in Dexter's imagination. How he tried to justify staying in prison.

Idk... idk.

@ElricReturns - I love the books! You totally nailed it about how he behaves in the books, but hes almost a different character completely in the books. But i see what you mean. I wouldnt hate your ideal, especially if they pulled it off well. it could work. i could see it.

I love the actress but the character annoyed me too much. She was great at portraying middle management though, no doubt.

It doesn't take place in Miami.

Many of these characters are dead.

Let. It. Go.

Looking forward to the new season and hope for more after 💉🔪
