Next week, The Art of The Mandalorian finally goes on sale, and the book promises to pull back the curtain on how the Disney+ TV series was brought to life in the build-up to the first season's premiere last November.
When The Mandalorian was first announced by Lucasfilm, the prevailing theory was that it would put the spotlight on Boba Fett. While we have seen a fleeting glimpse of the bounty hunter in season two, a new piece of concept art indicates that the studio's concept artists were also working under that assumption (or were simply using the villain's appearance as a reference).
It's pretty crazy seeing The Child play with Fett's helmet, but unlike Din Djarin, he would have no problem showing his face. While we'll likely learn more once this book is released, it's entirely possible that one early plan was for the show's title Mandalorian to wear Fett's old armour.
"I did two versions of this realistic kidbaby," artist Christian Alzmann says. "I immediately had an idea when Jon said he wanted it to be more puppetlike, one of those rare lightning-strike moments. I looked a lot at J.C. Leyendecker’s babies. He has this certain way of doing massive cheeks on babies. I was also thinking about old Warner Bros. cartoon characters, which had those same cheeks."
