THE MANDALORIAN: [SPOILER] Returns Alongside A Deadly New Platoon Of Stormtroopers In "The Spies"

The latest episode of The Mandalorian saw a major villain return to the Disney+ series, and they were flanked by perhaps the deadliest class of Stormtroopers we've ever seen in this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

A couple of weeks ago, The Mandalorian ended with the revelation that Moff Gideon had been rescued or perhaps even taken by Mandalorians. That prompted fans to wonder if there might be a traitor within Din Djarin's ranks, but the truth was finally revealed in "The Spies" yesterday.

Moff Gideon is once again in charge of his slice of what remains of the Empire and has created a new class of Stormtroopers who are wearing Beskar armour. Similar in appearance to the Mandalorians who were loyal to the Empire in The Clone Wars, their suits also have elements that are at least somewhat reminiscent of what First Order Stormtroopers wore in the sequels.

At the end of this week's episode, Bo-Katan Kryze, Din Djarin, Grogu, and their fellow Mandalorians are attacked by these Stormtroopers and, as you might expect, quickly overcome by them.

It's then that Gideon arrives wearing his own suit of Mandalorian armour!

He intends to create a new Mandalore which he rules over. Explaining that he's created the next generation of Dark Trooper armour, his suit is forged from Beskar and makes him a force to be reckoned with. Gideon goes on to say he's aggregated the best of Cloners, the Jedi, and Mandalorians to create an army that will bring "order" to the Galaxy.

We know the First Order Stormtroopers weren't clones, so does that mean the soldiers wearing those fancy new suits are Force-Sensitive clones? It's a compelling possibility, though there's always a chance we haven't seen this final army yet.

What is clear is that Gideon is not working for Grand Admiral Thrawn (the beginning of "The Spies" establishes that he doesn't even believe he will return). We're now having our doubts about whether he's even partly responsible for the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke as his cloning interests are seemingly selfish.

These aren't the only familiar foes we see in this episode, of course, and you can find out more about them right here.

Were those Stormtroopers the same type of ones we saw in ‘The Heroes of Mandalore’ arc from Rebels?

Best episode of the season, it was terrific. And a huge bounce back after the worst Mandalorian episode of the entire series. This here is what this season should have been like over all.

The Praetorian Guards were [frick]ing cool and still the second coolest thing from Last Jedi.

@KaptainKhaos - I really appreciated the respect the series gave to presenting Paz Vizla here. Had it not been for those Guards, he could have been successful. He went out swinging.

This is the Way, indeed.

I said this in the thread yesterday, but Din has become the Mad Max of the Star Wars Universe. Where Max is haunted by the loss of his family, Din is motivated by the hope of his future with Grogu. I still think they should have been separated for longer, but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy the story we are getting now.
Is Din the same reckless badass we met during the early run of the show? Not exactly. He's still headstrong and pragmatic. But now, we have witnessed this dogmatic loner have an extended character arc that results in becoming part of something bigger than himself. This episode, he swore his fealty to Bo Katan--not because she is the better fighter (we already saw how that turned out last time), but because she is the best chance that the Mandalorians have at unification. Her confession of failing Mandalore was the sign of Humility that is necessary for the Mandalorians to respect her. She is honorable in defeat and will bring honor back to Mandalore.

@TheRose - could you refresh my memory. What do you mean by "We already saw how that turned out last time".

@OmegaEffect - I could have sworn I remembered a fight between them, but maybe I'm misremembering. I'm not certain Din ever did beat her one-on-one, but I thought that when Bo and her crew showed up in the series, Din got the upper hand. It may not have been a definitive end to their competition though.

Gotta rewatch those earlier seasons again!

I know that the pacing is strange this season, but even though I can feel the difference, I'm loving it. The action sequences in particular have been thrilling in nearly every episode. I'm getting strong Battlefront vibes from the combat exchanges.

@TheRose - right. There are certainly maybe 1-2 more standalone episodes than there needed to be, but I'm still enjoying those episodes.

I’m starting to get the sneaking suspicion that the Armorer is operating under malice
TheRose
TheRose - 4/13/2023, 12:00 PM
@PlusUltra - There was a small moment at the beginning of the episode where I thought the Armorer may be sinister...but then that was dashed away when she offered to go the planet surface AND took the weak Mandalorians back to the fleet. I'm hoping for Deus Ex Armorer in the next episode.

I'd be a bit heartbroken to see her break bad. Her stoic and dogmatic presence has served her people well and I'd hate to see her take off the helmet to make a villainous twirl of the moustache.
TheRose
TheRose - 4/13/2023, 12:24 PM
@PlusUltra - If she ends up being Death Watch/an acolyte of Maul, that could be interesting, but I don't know if I need that heel-turn to feel compelled. We just met an Imperial Legion of Doom this past episode. With Thrawn on the way, I've got enough baddies to rage against.

Latest episode looked better than it was to some because the rest of season 3 has been so bad.

The showrunners have the Imperials and Stormtroopers be more competent at times than when they get beaten and they simply suck. But the writers are unintentionally making it seem like the Imperials and Stormtroopers were more competent without the Sith leading them.

The shitty, ultra-predictable Mandalorian writers are notorious for putting characters in a no win situation then...SURPRISE...someone shows up to save them. In season 2 they set up Luke saving the day. Now they are setting up someone else saving the day.

Captain Teva finding the Lambda shuttle was the set up. He has already tried getting the New Republic to help and failed. So he will go to someone else. My guess is it will be Han & possibly Lando & Leia with some troops who show up to save the day.

This is k no longer Din’s story. Now it’s about Bo Katan.

The IG12 walking suit for Baby Yoda was dumb.

They cannibalized Admiral Paellon from the Thrawn Trilogy books.

I’m not loving this season. I’m not sure what Favreau and Filoni are doing but it’s missing something.

They are going to have to cram in a ton of stuff for the last episode.

If they had shortened the bird rescue filler episode and had Bo go meet her faction on that other planet without having another stupid video game side quest then they could have had three episodes to sort out the ending.

DarthOmega - 4/13/2023, 2:01 PM
@TyrantBossMedia - That's what I don't get. Last week's episode meant nothing. They could have totally left that out. Also the Dr. Pershing/Couroscant episode could have been chopped up much better and more Mando story and world building could fit in.

Mandalorians retaking Mandalore, while Gideon is setting up on that planet. Building an army of Beskar clad warriors could have made for an entire season. Instead we get Lizzo and Jack Black for a whole stupid pointless episode.

Filler episodes are ridiculous. I wonder why Lucasfilm is so hell bent on making them so often
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 4/13/2023, 2:20 PM
@DarthOmega - I don't know why they make them. They didn't have any real filler episodes in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. All episodes led to something.

The Blue Shrimp episode led to Mando meeting Cara Dune and showing she was a bad ass.
The rescue mission on the Republic prison ship led to meeting Bill Burr's character and he and Dune were both instrumental in the mission to get the access to the Imperial computer system and their subsequent escape.

The first episode of this season set things up a bit. Introduced the Pirates, and setting up Navarro.
Then the Mandalorians are giving a plot of land to set up on Navarro two episodes ago only to decide to leave right away.

They could have done tone in week three. Have the threat to the Mandalorians from the gator thing on their planet, they stop the thing. Meanwhile Mando is doing his penance on Mandalore juxtaposing the dangers of the planet the Mandalorians have chose with the non-threatening Mandalore which is now habitable.

He doesn't have Baby Yoda run to Bo Katan for help, he brings her along since he is going to explore Mandalore and she is curious because deep down inside she holds that love for her planet.
That keeps her from sulking on her throne for two episodes.

Bo returns after his quest and helps beat the creature and brings Bo and they tell the Mandalorians that Mandalore is habitable.
Then they get a mission to save Navarro and do that.
Save Navarro and he gives them a plot of land where they choose to settle.

They bring a small group to explore Mandalore further and you have episodes 5 and 6 of them exploring only to find the Empire there. Overwhelmed and the big guy is killed and Din captured saving the rest so they escape.
Rush off to unite the Mandalorian factions. Declare war on Empire.

Back to Mandalore by 7 with a mission to save Din and avenge the big guy.
And it's all set up for the finale.

It was that simple and no b-s filler episodes.

And answer me this. Why didn't Baby Yoda use his force powers to open the door or save Din in the episode. Why just have him sit there. It's as if Favreau had written this season without Baby Yoda in mind but was forced to including him by merchandising and Kennedy.

Kennedy screws up everything she puts her hands on.

@TyrantBossMedia - I thought for sure Grogu would do something. The whole "I didn't teach him that" part was awesome because of course Luke wouldn't allow people to fight among themselves when the mission is much more important. But it seemed like maybe a set up for him to use his force powers later in the episode. Especially when Gideon said Jedi, and they showed Grogu's face. Also, Paellon. That's his live action debut? Wut? I honestly have no clue what they are doing over at Lucasfilm
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 4/13/2023, 2:56 PM
@DarthOmega - I know. Such an inauspicious introduction for such an integral character (Paelleon).

And did you notice Commandant Hue? They injected a commandant in a holographic meeting of high ranking personnel all so they can introduce crybaby Hux to set up the sequel trilogies.

Dear God in heaven. There is non repairing Star Wars. It's broken beyond saving at this point.

@DarthOmega - I love the "filler" episodes. I'm the weirdo who eoukd call for a 30 episode season full of world building and side quests. Leave the main quest to just 3 or 4 episodes lol

Funny thing

Boba Fett was created because of lack of money

The Boba Fett armor was suppose to be for another class of Stormtroopers but they didnt have money to make more so they scrapped the idea and painted the armor

You know what’s bugging me about the show this season? Last season before the finale Moff Gideon captured Grogu in front of Mando while Mando stood there helpless and couldn’t do anything then this season before the finale Moff Gideon captures Mando, while Grogu stood there, helpless, and couldn’t do anything. This show is becoming extremely unoriginal and predictable. 🤷‍♂️😴
