Giancarlo Esposito cemented himself as one of the great Star Wars villains in The Mandalorian, but Moff Gideon found himself soundly defeated in the show's season 2 finale. That doesn't mean we've seen the last of him, of course, and the actor teased his future in the Disney+ series during a recent interview with Variety.
"I have to imagine you would [see Gideon return]. I can't speak for [Lucasfilm], but I know I have desire," he teased. "I think we need to see Moff to continue the story, and to continue the pressure and edge that someone with the big brain that Moff has thinks about."
"I can almost guarantee it, but there's never a guarantee. But...you'll see me, baby. Come on!"
It's become clear in The Mandalorian that Gideon had something to do with the return of Emperor Palpatine, and it would be strange to move on from that after all those big teases. He wanted Grogu for some sort of cloning experiments, while the figure in that vat looked an awful lot like the being we'd come to know as Supreme Leader Snoke (a vessel controlled by Palpatine).
Esposito couldn't shed any light on this speculation, of course, but he did share his gratitude for that recent Emmy nomination. "The fact that I'm here tonight, and the position I am to be nominated for Moff Gideon? I thank Jon Favreau, and I thank Dave Filoni, and I thank Disney, and Kathleen Kennedy for producing. This show has taken people by storm, because there's so much to love."
There's still a lot of story to cover in The Mandalorian, and with all those spinoffs on the way, it's clear Favreau and Filoni have huge plans for the Star Wars franchise on the small screen in the coming years.
How much Moff Gideon will factor into those plans is a mystery to us for the time being!
