SUPERNATURAL: Misha Collins Reveals Castiel's Sexuality After The Events Of Last Week's Shocking Episode

Supernatural delivered a crushing blow to fans last week when Misha Collins' Castiel was killed off (for good, this time), and the actor has now opened up about that big moment with Dean Winchester...

In last week's episode of Supernatural, Castiel made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Death and save Dean Winchester one last time. In his final moments, he told Jensen Ackles' Dean that he loves him, a statement many fans believed was meant to be romantic in nature.

Castiel had previously made a deal with "The Empty" to trade his soul for his adopted son Jack's. However, the agreement meant that the cosmic force would only collect once the fallen angel had found true happiness, and it seems Castiel achieved this once he admitted his feelings for Dean and relieved himself of a burden he's likely been carrying around for several years now.

During a recent appearance at the DarkLight Online Convention (via PopBuzz.com), Collins confirmed that this moment was intended to make it clear that Castiel is indeed gay.

"Castiel tells Dean he loves him and basically makes Destiel canon," the actor said. "Fans are freaking out after that. To complicate matters, he dies after that. So Castiel makes his homosexual declaration of love and then dies, which plays into a timeless Hollywood trope of 'Kill the gays.' We give, and then we take away."

It doesn't sound like the actor is overly happy about how things ended for Castiel in Supernatural's final season, but the character has died before and could easily return again. As of right now, however, it seems the door is closed on further exploring the angel's feelings for Dean Winchester.

What's your take on this revelation about Castiel?

Do angels have gender in Supernatural? Can't they technically inhabit any human body? Then again, they do have that one true vessel thing and Jimmy Novak is Castiel's true vessel, so I guess, if they do have gender, Castiel would be male. Anyway, still happy they actually made Destiel canon.

@Odin - They all refer to themselves as brother but I think it's really that none have a biological sex in human terms. Jimmy Novak isn't Castiels true vessel. We only know of two and that's for Lucifer and Michael. The bloodline Jimmy Novak belongs to is suitable for Castiel. He could have stay in the daughter but didn't due to her age and the deal Jimmy made with Cas. The body though has since been reinforced for Castiel that is basically is a true vessel.

They have to inhabit a human body to interact with people outside of heaven. So really Cas and co generally don't care about the biologicals sex of the body. Even the demons less so.

@storyteller - Yeah, true. And since Jimmy Novak's soul died and went to heaven long time ago, the body is now just Castiel's body. So based on that you could argue that while in the mortal realm, Cass is officially a dude.

@Odin - Take Meg when she was in Sam's body. Was she more a dude just because she was in Sam during that short period of time. Castiel can still leave the Novak body but he can go back to it at any time without permission as it is his now.

@Odin - On a flashback of season 12 Castiel had a woman as vessel in 1900. Pretty sure they're genderless

Wasn't there an entire flashforward episode where Castiel was a guru esk character bedding a bunch of women?

I mean he can still be in love with Dean, but weird to call him "homosexual" and not bisexual if that were the case.

@FearTheLiving - Seems they rather kill off a gay character than just have a bi one

@FearTheLiving - We gotta question how true it was though. One of the people there was God. Castiel's vessel Jimmy is probably straight but who knows who Castiel really prefers. I don't think he cares about biological sex or species. Man, woman, demon, or angel. He seems to have an attraction to everyone.

I didn't think it was a gay moment thought it was more of I love you brother or family member.

I thought it was a "sexual" kind of love statement but in the sense of a celestial being being in love. The vessel Castiel is in just happens to be a man. If he could be a tree then he's still feel the same way. There are no male angels or female angels. They can inhabit any human body.

Really we've seen how Angels act on the show. They aren't really aware sexually. It's more like how Greek Gods fell in love with humans(minus the sexual bits).

Virtually everyone on Supernatural has died and returned again. In fact that's the biggest of the show's many problems.

No big surprise that is how they ended it and I suspect the only reason that his story was handled that way was to avoid all the cries of queerbaiting. Hate to tell you guys, but it's still queerbaiting. If the creators had, had any interest in portraying Castiel as a gay character they have had over a decade to do it in.

LGBT+ viewers don't expect to be represented in every show on tv... tbh we are used to very little. What we don't like is being fobbed off and misled... it's just so insulting.

Misha Collins can say whatever he wants; however I honestly don't believe the writers (or the producers) meant Cas's declaration of love as a romantic overture. I realize that there's a "script" floating around online that says otherwise, but it's been determined to be a fake. Some obsessive fan created it and then began circulating it through social media. As much resistance as Jensen has had to this plotline all these years, there's utterly no way he'd agree to it. Someone needs to ask him HIS take on all this. Jensen, AKA Mr. Homophobic "Dean is 100% straight," and "I wanted to do a cowboy movie until 'Brokeback Mountain' came out" would NOT be down with this homosex interpretation, no matter what Collins says.
