VENOM Projected For $160+ Million Worldwide Opening; Awesome New Mondo Posters Released

Venom opens in a number of overseas locations today and reaches North America on Friday and things are currently looking good at the box office. We also have an amazing new Mondo poster by Matt Ryan Tobin!

According to Deadline, Venom is currently projected to earn anywhere between $160 million - $175 million at the worldwide box office this weekend. Around $60 million - $65 million of that is expected to come from North America, a solid result for Sony's first live-action Spider-Verse movie. However, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice proved that a strong opening doesn't always mean that much.

If moviegoers don't enjoy Venom, repeat viewings will plummet and bad word of mouth will lead to a huge second-week drop (which will then result in it being a box office disappointment, something which is a very real possibility considering the fact Sony must have spent an awful lot of money on special effects). However, bad reviews didn't stop Suicide Squad from being a hit back in 2016.

Venom will be going head to head with A Star Is Born and that's estimated to earn $30 million domestically and an additional $20 million overseas so a lot of "Little Monsters" will no doubt be disappointed that their anti-Venom campaign didn't pay off. In other news, we have two very cool posters for the movie which go on sale from Mondo this Friday. They're illustrated by Matt Ryan Tobin.

It will be the first cbm I skip since Fant4stic.
So, I'm ready to read all the cringe-worthy spoilers.

If the best thing you can say about this movie is that's "so bad it's good" or that it's unintentionally hilarious, then who the hell is gonna watch it?

@Jeight8 - This time next week you will be seeing hipsters with their beards fashioned into red "venom tongues".

@Jeight8 - Most reviews say the movie isn't good, but not terrible. Problems from the reviews are Venom does not appear until an hour into the movie and that Eddie Brock isn't your average "hero/anti-hero" because he is such a doofus. Eddie brock being a clutz and doofus before getting his symbiote is a highlight for me as it's pretty accurate to the cartoons and comics, so they have my ticket.

this will be huge...calling it now. People i trust say they actually enjoy the hot mess...definitely making Suicide Squad level of money.

I am honestly excited

@Jeight8 - where and how much

@RasAlGhul - Last year I leased a nice condo on Mimir's Circle. I thought it was a good deal, within five minute's walk to the Bifrost, nice view of Idunn's garden. But the Norn premiums alone cost me an eye, and wolf insurance was another arm and a leg (though my neighbor said he could get me a deal on that, maybe as little as a hand).

@RasAlGhul - If it opens with $65M there is literally NO way Venom comes anywhere close to Suicide Squad money. SS made double that in it's opening weekend ($133M), it ain't happening boss.

Honestly the only thing I've liked about this movie is Venom's design. That's about it.

Either this fails or the SUMC becomes the new Transformers franchise.

@WeaponXCII - it's gonna fail. no way it's making these numbers with this bad of reviews. It's bound to be lower

@SuperCBMcritic - but suicide squad

member?
SuperCBMcritic
SuperCBMcritic - 10/3/2018, 9:59 AM
@ftf530 - That opened to a much higher number everywhere else. Venom is probably opening to half of that in both areas, hell maybe less. And if it's already being this badly reviewed, it's gonna be below projections

@ftf530 - I'm praying to Thanos now too after I found out it only needs to break 200 million for some reason. But with all this negativity about the movie, I see Marvel stepping in and taking Spider-man back
shadowspider9
shadowspider9 - 10/3/2018, 9:33 PM
@SuperCBMcritic - It needs 200 million to make a profit due to how low the budget was.
However it will need far more to justify a sequel and Sony's insane shared universe.

@SuperCBMcritic - @shadowspider9 -

200 million is ALL IT NEEDS TO BREAK EVEN?! WE. ARE. DOOMED.

That's an incredibly low budget...

If this movie makes 700+ million, then we're definitely getting a sequel. It'd be too successful for it not to get one. Anything else less tho, and Venom may have seen his last appearance in theaters.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 10/3/2018, 4:01 AM
@KWilly - I'd put my threshold probably somewhere near 500. Even below that, it's possible, depending on whether Hardy would even come back. But above 500, even without him I think they'd probably do a slightly lower budget sequel that shakes up the formula (maybe She-Venom) just to milk the franchise.
SuperCBMcritic
SuperCBMcritic - 10/3/2018, 5:01 AM
@Spock0Clock - I'm saying 300 million, cuz that's whay IMBD predicted and they were close to right for a bunch of other movies this year. No way we're getting a sequel if it does this bad

Honestly shitty comic book movies have it so easy these days. Be shitty, have a few popular actors in it, exist within the PG-13 range, and get a popular artist on the soundtrack and you can actually have a hit movie.

You put any of these shitty comic book movies in the market before 2012 and I'm pretty sure all of them would have bombed.
