As promised, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games have revealed Call of Duty: Vanguard with an explosive new trailer that promises "WWII combat like never before." This year's game will take us back in time to witness the origins of Special Forces.
The campaign will put players in the combat boots of four different characters who comprise Task Force One in a story that takes place across four major theaters of war. For as much focus that is placed on the campaign, we all know it's the multiplayer that drives people to Call of Duty.
While the trailer doesn't show any actual multiplayer gameplay, a more detailed blog post confirms that Call of Duty: Vanguard will launch with 20 maps, including 16 built for core gameplay. The concept of Special Forces carries over into multiplayer as you'll create an original Operator and rise through the ranks. Customization will be pushed to a new level with an advanced Gunsmith and Caliber system. More multiplayer details, including the worldwide reveal and information on the planned Open Beta, will be shared "soon."
Zombies is also returning in Call of Duty: Vanguard with Treyarch Studios leading development on the popular game mode. Vanguard's Zombies mode will actually continue and intertwine the Dark Aether story into the lore, while also innovating core gameplay. A preview of Vanguard Zombies will come around October.
Call of Duty: Vanguard will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC with cross-play and cross-progression supported. You'll be able to take your profile, progression and stats with you regardless of which platform you're playing on. The game is set to launch on November 5, 2021.
