EDITORIAL: My Top 5 Favorite Movie-Based Video Games

It is a simple fact of life that video games based upon upcoming films tend to suck big time. However, there are that select few that shine above those shitty cash-grabs and sometimes are as good if not better than the films they are based upon. Hit the jump for my favorite games based off of films.

5. Batman Begins

Bear with me on this one. While not many of people have expressed much love for this game, I could remember the nights I spent playing it and just admiring the kind of atmosphere that surrounded Batman, not to mention Christian Bale's cold and emotionless voice rocking the speakers. I believe that Batman Begins showed that video game tie-ins could be better than what was normally being shat out. Seriously guys, it is nowhere close to the Bat-games we have now, but with the graphics, the feel, the cast from the film doing the voices, and the extra batsuits, it was a helluva good start.

4. Peter Jackson's King Kong

I was a little surprised by this one. I half expected it to suck but what I actually got was about a half-day's worth of excellent survival gameplay, not to mention the areas that you play as Kong were simply breathtaking. As Jack Driscoll, you have to fight off swarms of pre-historic creatures and even dinosaurs with simple weapons and a cool(but limited) arsenal of guns. Never before has a game made me value a spear quite like this title. The game immediately grabs you and doesn't let go until it's final and iconic, climactic ending. Any Kong fans that have not played this game, I will tell you that you tuly don't know what you are missing.

3. The Godfather

While not exactly a 'tie-in', The customizable gangster was a plus for me, and then being able to follow the legendary story of the film with your own character and interacting with the characters from the movie was truly a treat for a fan like me. The gameplay featuring the gunfighting and driving gave it a GTA-feel and was a solid mechanic to go with, and made this game a nice addition to the world of The Godfather. I will say that at times the side missions were repetitive, but it wasn't so repetitive that it took away from the fanatstic experience of the game. A must play for fans of The Godfather.

2. Spider-man 2

I can't tell you how many times I'd fire this baby up just to swing around New York City. Besides the web-slinging fun, the narration by Bruce Cambell, the crazy boss fights, and the overall tone of the game were what helped this to be even better that the first game it followed after. Although I can't stress at how many times I'd get annoyed at the camera angles and the fact that those damn balloons floated away way too fast...

1. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

This tie-in is a beautifully dark and immersive look into the world of Riddick. The game wonderfully interprets Butcher Bay the way I had imagined with its claustrophobic atmosphere and creepy inmates. It was something to just stand there and admire every little detail that was put into the making of the prison, not to mention that this game is one of the best first-person shooters to ever grace consoles. A strong point is definitely the hand-to-hand combat that even puts gun usage to shame. Also, Vin Desiel's voice and likeness was a highlight as well. It's sad that that the film it was based upon, The Chronicles of Riddick, didn't pan out so well.

Honorable MentionsThe Punisher, X-Men Origins: WolverineJaws: Unleashed, Spider-Man, Star Wars: Episode III, and Goldeneye 007(N64). Please feel free to share your lists and comments below!

Never played the Godfather and i have to say that King King was one of ghe first games i got with my xbox 360, but i didnt like it.

However, Batman Begins doesn't get the love it deserves. It was entirely stealth based, but you can almost see the influence it had in the predator missions of the Arkham series. Very underrated game even though it did have its problems.

Spider-Man 2 is still the best Spidey game. Ultimate Spider-Man was a close 2nd. All the others were either too glitchy to be considered good, or were just missing something that made those other two so great.

Now, I have to give props to you for giving Butcher Bay #1. Talk about a hidden gem that very few people played, much less expected to be good. It was a fantastic game and did nearly everything perfect, from the awesome graphics, the sound effects, and gameplay. Nearly all the big name reviewers gave it great reviews as well. Such a shame more people didn't get into it, because it really is one of the best games to come out last gen.

Overall, great list, man. I'm glad you didn't include Wolverine Origins because that game was extremely glitchy, yet people usually won't admit how bad it was because you actually got to play as a violent Wolvie that dismembered people and decapitated them, which was fun in its own right, but again, all the glitches pissed me off.

No way man. Superman Returns wasn't only a bad movie game, it was one of the worst games out of all last gen.

I think everyone was blown away by the web-swinging in Spider-man 2.
There was also a sweet Hulk game that came out around then that was free-roam and he could jump huge distances, and I remember wishing for more free-roam superhero games. Arkham was great or a resident evil style, but I never really saw a great freeroamer superhero game since.

@TheMexicanSuperman

If by the same style you mean a freeroaming game where you split up your time between story missions and random acts of crime around the city, than yes. I highly suggest it.

I played a Riddick game once. Rented it from Blockbuster. I was drugged up after having my wisdom teeth removed, and I just remember walking around talking to people with a shiv. Or was it a screwdriver. Didn't get anywhere in that game.

GoldenEye will always be the best. Not that remake, although my brother LOVES it.... ugh, no. It was just so awesome, and had so much replay value.

Spider-man 2 was fun, definitely. I really really liked Ultimate Spider-man more, however, but yeah, Bruce Campbell added a lot of fun to it. It was the prototype. I always hated the Mysterio bits though, and I love Mysterio. I just hated the Statue of Liberty parts and the funhouse. The "boss battle" was hilarious though, very clever.

I remember buying Batman Begins, and I got stuck on the level when Ra's in burning Wayne Manor... never got further than that. I only got it because I loved the movie so much, but it seemed really... lacking. I thought it was a little over the top... tried too hard. The Tumbler bits were dumb, and I never felt like Batman - more like 47.

I didn't like King Kong to begin with, and to make an FPS for it... I just, no. Didn't give it a try, and by the time I got a 360, I was completely done with first person shooters.

Terminator 3: The Redemption was pretty cool, if not really hard.
I was always amused by how they called it "Redemption" considering how bad the original movie tie-in was, and the story on top of that.

Redemption adds a lot of stuff to the story, which wouldn't have made too much sense, I suppose, but it's still pretty neat. There's a lot of emphasis on the future, and by the time you get to John in 2003, you're halfway through the game. The TX sends you back in time (via the particle accelerator) to an alternate future, rather than just reprogramming you to kill John.

Awesome list @ WES buddy!

Yeah, I'd go with that, not played Godfather though.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine game was much much better than the actual movie :p

Ahhh memories to the N64 Goldeneye! ;P

Ummm some I'd think of with a comic book connection are: BAULDER'S GATE 1 & 2, TEKKEN 3 (first PS game ever owned), SHADOWMAN (Dreamcast), DC UNIVERSE Online (PS3), ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN was pretty good too, man just so many out there!

Oh and PUNISHER for X-BOX, damn that was an awesome game!

Big thumbs.

All movie games? That's a long list.

Batman Returns was also a really cool beat em up on multiple platforms.

And how about Knights of the Old Republic? Or Dark Forces or Jedi Academy, I could fill out a list just on Star Wars games... X Wing vs Tie Fighter and Rebellion (the strategy game, that's probably #1 for me). Yup, that's five.

@nibs:
There's loads of people who'd love to see Hulk: Ultimate Destruction get a sequel.

What!? No movie-based Lego video games on the list!? There's a reason they sell well. They are fun and you can play them with the whole family. Some of them, like the Indian Jones ones made me expand my knowledge of the series.

Before the Arkham games, Batman Begins was the definitive Batman game for me. It got really easy to play when you'd played through once and learned that you could use the same stealth tactic every time to advance (you really only had one option most times), but it was a stealth-based Batman game with a great combat system. It also did an even better job that the movie of capturing the gritty, dark feel of the franchise. The Arkham games are gritty and dark in an evil circus way almost, but Begins sort of had that true darkness that comes from real experience.

Also, you could drive the Batmobile. Thankfully, we'll get this option back in Arkham Knight.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was awesome! really pushed the graphics on the first xbox & filled in a lot of questions about Riddick! Plus you got to shank people in prison! What hasn't been said about GOLDENEYE? best game ever made for the N64!

batman Begins the game is what really helped set the groundwork for the Batman games we have today. It is a very underrated game and the cast from the movie doing the voices was excellent.

Spider-Man 2 to this day is still one of my favorite games. They need to either come out with an HD version or make the new games similar to it. I wish my PS2 still worked so I could play it. I am a sucker for free roaming environments.

I agree with one ofyour honorable mentions which is the Punisher game. I thought that was a great game and they need to make a new game similarly and maybe a few new improvement.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay/Assault on Dark Athena as #1? Damn right. That game is awesome.

Never played BB, Godfather, and King Kong.

Played Spidey 2 and hated it. To this day I still don't get what the fuss was over that game? The web swinging was cool but that was the only quality that caught my attention everything else was just crap.
