In news that's certain to send ripples throughout the gaming community, Microsoft has announced that it is officially planning to purchase Activision Blizzard for a massive $68.7 billion. So, if you happen to be an avid Call of Duty player on PlayStation, you might want to consider purchasing an Xbox!

You can read the full press release over at GameFragger.com.

We don't know for certain if this means Microsoft will maintain exclusive rights to the likes of COD, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Spyro and many other titles, but it seems like a fairly safe bet!

In a statement released on Tuesday, CEO at Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer said: "As a team, we are on a mission to extend the joy and community of gaming to everyone on the planet. We all know that gaming is the most vibrant and dynamic form of entertainment worldwide and we’ve experienced the power of social connection and friendship that gaming makes possible."

"As we pursue that mission, it is incredibly exciting to announce that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard."

Once the deal closes (it's still subject to approval by legislators), it will become the most expensive acquisition in gaming history, and is sure to have major implications for the entire industry. What do you guys make of this announcement? You'll find more details below.

@Ha1frican - Nope. He's staying until at least 2024 unless they buy out his contract.

@JDL - As shown by the Bethesda and now Activision Blizzard acquisitions it’s not like they don’t have the money to do so lol

@Ha1frican - Well if he he stays until 2024 some of the stink will be gone IF nothing more bad stuff with his name on it surfaces.

Sources are saying he's leaving after the deal and his comments to reporters seem to align with that. Nothing is officially confirmed but it looks like Microsoft may buy him out based on some angry reactions from staff regarding his big payday.

@BlackBeltJones - Not liking these acquisitions by microsoft. I haven't bought a next gen console, but was really wanting the PS5, now that they are buying up some of the studios that make some of my favorite games, it might force my hand to buy both systems if they make them exclusives...ugh.

@Shivermetimbers - similar boat as you. Still have my PS4 but have a ONE X. Want a pa5 but they’re still not super available

@Shivermetimbers - I'm no expert, but I think as far as current next gen, this acquisition will only benefit Xbox Series X people by giving them more gamepass titles once they are able to convert the back catalog of already made games. I can't see too many titles being made a released during this gens life span. Like will we even see Diablo 4 released this gen? Or see a new WoW for console? The Bethesda deal for the next Elder Scrolls will be more of an issue because that's closer to actually launching.

As a PS5 and Xbox owner, there haven't been hardly any titles released on either system since launch, not like previous generations where you had waves of titles in every genre at launch.

@ElricReturns - Agreed. Admittedly, the bethesda deal has more of an impact for me. I could care less about the blizzard titles, but activision games generally interest me. Between bethesda and activision, there should be some significant releases during this generation of consoles.

@Shivermetimbers - there should be. Let's see if any of them get launched lol there are like 2 games available to pre order that are mildly interesting.... no exciting or mind blowing games are even available to buy right now. The game industry is bullshit right now.

@ElricReturns - Yeah for sure! Its amazing there is such demand for the new consoles. I havent seen any game that is a "must have" that isnt available on the previous gen yet.

Also now I’m REALLY glad I got a Series X as my second console in December, I may not pay for CoD anymore (haven’t since Black Ops 2) but all of them getting added to Gamepass will make game night with the boys easier since we have even more games to choose from toes around in

How is $68 billion even a real number?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 1/18/2022, 9:35 AM
@Kumkani - isn't that also what Disney paid for Fox? Definitely large numbers
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 1/18/2022, 9:37 AM
@Kumkani - What even crazier to think about is the Xbox division doesn’t have anywhere near that kind of money especially after floundering last Gen. Phil asked daddy Satya Nadella for an allowance lol and it shows just how much money Microsoft proper really has that they have had 2 multibillion dollar acquisitions in as many years

@Kumkani - You can literally but a small country with that money.

@bobevanz - Are WoW and Starcraft even on console?

And i doubt they'll make CoD an exclusive since it's been a cash cow for generations.
Darth258
Darth258 - 1/18/2022, 9:41 AM
In this situation PC takes all since there aren't xbox console exclusives as far as i know. All comes to both platforms.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 1/18/2022, 9:43 AM
@Darth258 - Ehhh i dont know, they left Minecraft alone but have confirmed that the Bethesda stuff which was a massive multiplatform staple is now going to be exclusive so it could really go either way

@bobevanz - That’s been my motto for several console generations at this point…It’s only now becoming an issue because Sony is beginning to lose a bunch of really popular IP’s…If I’m a player who prefers Sony’s habitat then I’m definitely starting to worry with these big acquisitions being made by Microsoft…
Darth258
Darth258 - 1/18/2022, 9:49 AM
@Ha1frican - Yeah, that's true. Atlest for Starfield. Not sure about the Fallout and Elder Scroll franchises, were there news in those?

Though having a good pc and a playstation fixes most of the exlusives problem.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 1/18/2022, 9:49 AM
@vegetaray - I’ve been PS only since 2013 and was worried to but ended up saying [frick] it and got an Xbox to play Halo Infinite and honestly I think it’s really worth it for Gamepass. If you get games digitally it’s honestly silly not to bc there’s so much there between the first party games, EA Play, and other third party games. If you don’t care about 4K it’s even sillier not to bc the Series S is cheap as hell and now pretty easy to get I see they at Target regularly

Ha1frican - 1/18/2022, 9:50 AM
@Darth258 - Oh if you have a PC then you’re fine, just get a Gamepass subscription at that point.

They haven’t specifically confirmed Fallout but given this interview where they hint at Elder Scrolls I think it’s safe to say everything is making the switch
