After a memorable turn as Magik in the otherwise forgettable The New Mutants movie, the sky has been the limit for Anya Taylor-Joy. Hot on the heels of Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, she's currently doing the rounds to promote Edgar Wright's critically acclaimed Last Night in Soho, and will soon take the lead as a younger Furiosa in George Miller's Mad Mad: Fury Road prequel.
During a recent red carpet appearance, Joy was asked about lending her voice to Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros., and it's clearly a role the actress has enjoyed taking a deep dive into.
"Oh, it is so much fun. We've started doing little bits and pieces already, but the greatest part is that I get to say I'm doing work or research just by gaming. [That's] pretty great," she admitted. When the interviewer asked if she's getting into the games, Joy added: "I have to. The fanbase is so intense, of course I have to do it. And it's so much fun."
Only the voice cast has been revealed thus far, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong among the leads. The title and animation style remain under wraps, but Joy would actually make a pretty perfect Peach in live-action, so something tells us she stands a chance of stealing the show here.
Playing the games is definitely a good place to start in terms of research, and the fact that some lines have already been recorded could be an indication that a trailer is coming sooner rather than later.
