We got our first look at Warner Bros./New Line's upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot via some promo stills earlier today, and we now have two more images and a synopsis which should give fans a much better idea of what to expect from this new take on the classic video game series.

The stills give us another look at mystical warriors Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang) preparing for battle, along with brand new character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) taking down an opponent in an MMA contest.

The introduction of a main character who's never featured in the games has not gone down very well with fans, especially since Cole's backstory and motivation seem so similar to Johnny Cage's. That aside, director Simon McQuoid's adaptation does seem to be sticking pretty close to the game's established mythology - and it's already been confirmed that we will see some fatalities.

Check out the story outline below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max this April 12. Keep an eye out for the trailer, which should be with us soon.

@TheHummus - Probably a huge ass reach but Cole Young might just be Johnny Cage before he changes his name to Johnny Cage.

Gotta have a new stage name and career when you are a washed up MMA Champion who has done his own stunts and you want to prove to everyone that you still got it.

You once fought in a CAGE...then you ain’t shit anymore, and then you join a tournament.

You’ll fight in the tournament and then make it into a movie. Stage Name: Johnny Cage

PROBABLY THE BIGGEST REACH I HAVE EVER WRITTEN

@SatsuiNoJXA - Not a reach at all IMO. When you think about it, makes so much sense that I'm almost willing to bet that is the subtle twist at the end.

@SatsuiNoJXA - I'd prefer that over Cole being an original character. I've heard rumors that he becomes Kabal or the new Scorpion.

@SatsuiNoJXA - Probably not that much of a reach: I believe Cole was initially written as Cage. The director then changed the character to adapt personal elements into the story, based off the previously posted interview.
