WONDER WOMAN 1984 Is Not A Sequel And Will Be A Standalone Adventure Like The JAMES BOND Movies

Have you been wondering how Chris Pine's Steve Trevor returns? Well, it may not matter because it's now been revealed that the Wonder Woman follow-up isn't actually a sequel in the traditional sense...

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Wonder Woman 1984 has been how exactly Steve Trevor returns from the dead. Well, based on a new report from Vulture, it sounds like we may not get any sort of explanation as director Patty Jenkins reportedly sees the movie as less of a sequel to what's come before, and more of a standalone story similar to the James Bond franchise.

According to producer Charles Roven, "[Jenkins] was just determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel. And she’s definitely delivering on that. It’s a completely different time frame and you’ll get a sense of what Diana-slash–Wonder Woman had been doing in the intervening years. But it’s a completely different story that we’re telling."

Hang on, that definitely sounds like a sequel, right? It feels like Roven is majorly contradicting himself but the site adds that sources have told them this instalment in the Wonder Woman franchise avoids the trappings of most sequels and is a "stand-alone film in the same way that Indiana Jones or Bond films are, instead of one continuous story that requires many instalments."

In other words, while we may get some vague references to the past, Jenkins isn't telling one continuous story and it's possible that Trevor won't return from the dead and will simply just shpw up - similar to how Felix Leiter in the James Bond franchise died, lost limbs, and then returned as a different actor for Casino Royale! It's all very strange, but the DCEU is now all about standalone stories...
