Little did we know when it was announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would debut in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time that it would be the start of a potentially game-changing way to handle movie releases. As we reported last night, Warner Bros. intends to premiere each of its 2021 titles on its streaming service the same time they hit the big screen.
Of course, it's a risky venture on the part of WarnerMedia, and as Deadline recently reported, the DC Comics sequel is expected to make a financial loss. One analyst tells the trade that Wonder Woman 1984 will need to gross "40% more than Tenet‘s current global take of $357.8 million to hit breakeven" and even "If Wonder Woman 1984 does Tenet numbers, it will lose money."
Unfortunately, that's likely to be the case for quite a few of those 2021 movies.
Still, if this drives a huge number of new subscribers to HBO Max, it could be worth it. While time will tell on that front, Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has now shared a new poster for the movie hyping its panel at CCXP this Sunday. With any luck, we'll get a new sneak peek of some sort!
Take a look at the poster below:
