WONDER WOMAN 1984 Star Gal Gadot Explains Why Diana Prince No Longer Wields Her Sword And Shield

Diana Prince may have donned her Golden Eagle armour in the new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer, but there was no sign of her signature sword and shield. Now, star Gal Gadot has shed some light on why that was.

The first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 certainly got fans talking, but something that was particularly noteworthy in the footage was the fact that Diana Prince seemed to have ditched the sword and shield she wielded in the first movie.

Those weapons were an iconic part of her arsenal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Justice League, so why aren't they going to factor into her next solo adventure? Well, during a recent interview, star Gal Gadot shed some light on the thought process behind that.

"We had an intention to let go of the sword because there's something very aggressive with the sword," the actress explains in the video below. "If you have a sword you need to use it, so we wanted to give that up and we didn't feel that the shield was necessary either. She's a goddess, she can fight, she's super strong, and she has the skills and the lasso."

That definitely contradicts what we saw of Diana Prince in the present day, but perhaps the threat of Doomsday was what made her decide to pick up the sword and shield once again!

What are your thoughts on this explanation from Gadot?

This is one of the problems I had with the trailer (and maybe the movie). This reasoning about letting go of the sword and shield is good. It makes sense, and I totally support it.

But the tiara-throwing and lasso-punching just feels a little too silly to me. I would be fine with her relying more on fisticuffs (the fight style looks great and weird and Amazony) and just throwing improvised objects, and using her more Lynda-Carter-y gear in a more restrained way.

It's a taste thing, definitely. This is just my taste on it.

I've always liked the idea of Wonder Woman as a sort of Legend of Zelda superhero, always picking up new enchanted items for situational use. So maybe she doesn't use a sword and shield anymore, fine, but maybe in the meantime she's picked up the Sandals of Hermes or the Cap of Hades or the Nemean Lion pelt. It's been 60 years, after all.

At least when you throw Hermes' winged sandals, it makes sense when it flies back into your hand, am I right?

Oh shit, not the Lion Pelt. Even if it died three thousand years ago, PETA would still raise a stink about clubbing an animal to death to wear its fur.

@Spock0Clock - IMO, the movies should stay true to the comics. When I was growing up, she didn't have the sword or shield, but she did wield the tiara as a weapon.

Maaaaan, i hope Grant Morrison is reading this! :D
Cause he was recently criticising this... change in superheroes in order to keep up with the times by -you guessed it- being "meta" af and he would really like this creative choice!

He also blasted the f*ck outta writers like Snyder and Bendis and i LOVED him for it!
The absolute madman ahaha!

I respect your opinion but fam...you're wrong in so many ways it's hilarious.
Like, for real, Snyder himself would tell you that.
The guy basically WORSHIPS Morrison and clearly is a wannabe Morrison.

@Doomsday8888 - Yeah I really like Morrison and he's one of the best in the industry no question. But I think there's a really strong case to be made for Snyder's run on Batman being better than Morrision's run on the book.

WW's was a bit too dark in BvS. The presentation in the stand alone movie in 2017 was perfect. The slightly brighter red, the faded gold armour , the sword and shield.....was all right on!

Not sure I'm liken this "neon bright" color scheme from WW84. I honestly didn't even notice the Sword and Shield being excluded...…..that sucks! It all smacks of "Marvel Rip-off" ….which we all now know ….that don't work with DCEU !

Figured this was the case, and I’m very happy about that. One of the reasons I love the first film so much because it placed Wonder Woman’s key trait in focus: compassion. She’s a bred warrior, but love is always what comes first for her. The New 52 is what the started the whole thing where Diana was always seen with a sword, whereas before that, for her to use any weaponry at all had to be a special case.

World War 1 and the mission of a god killer is exactly that. Even with that, all the times she used the sword was in defensive actions, never to kill. Ares was the only target she intended to kill.

People are already saying this contradicts BvS...guys, a lot has already contradicted BvS since and it’s time to accept that movie simply doesn’t matter anymore. Yes the first film was based around the photo but can very easily and creatively be worked around.
But even if it does, this was against Doomsday. A character who was already giving the likes of Superman a hard time.
Then again with Justice League, it’s Steppenwolf and Darkseid’s army.

I know there’s supposed leaks for this movie. I haven’t/ won’t read them so please if anyone replies, don’t even allude to anything about them here. I’m sure there will be a threat where maybe weaponry is necessary, and she probably still doesn’t use any. But that would be because again, BvS and JL do not count anymore and the lesson was learned with the first Wonder Woman. And clearly there’s a reason for the Golden Eagle armor.

But anyway, I say all that just to say, Wonder Woman is a character that’s not afraid to cross that line. But it’s always, ALWAYS when it’s of utmost necessity. It makes those moments more powerful when they do arise.

@DTor91 - so you don't want to know about the characters from crounching tiger hidden dragon crossing over?

This was actually funny enough my favorite part of the trailer and the thing I noticed first. I hated when they started having Wonder Woman start using the sword and shield, so very many heroes inside and outside of comics uses swords and/or shields, and here comes this wonderful woman who uses something no one uses a lasso and bracelets, it’s so unique and cinematically you can do things we’ve never seen before instead of the same old swords tricks. So glad they went back exclusively to her long time defining gear.
BuzzKillington
BuzzKillington - 12/11/2019, 3:15 AM
But she uses it in BvS and Justice League so it really doesn't matter.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 12/11/2019, 5:16 AM
She was convinced that the sword was special in the first film when it wasn’t (or at least wasn’t what she thought it was) so it makes sense that she wouldn’t be interested in replacing a lie.

And going with just a shield would really make her a Cap wannabe.

The lasso offers a lot more interesting action anyway imo

I didn't even notice the absence, but I hope its not permanent. WW with a sword and shield is BA and helps set her apart even more from other superheroes.
