WONDER WOMAN 1984: Warner Bros. Denies Plans To Scrap The Sequel's Theatrical Release

Despite reliable sources claiming that Warner Bros. is considering a Digital release of some sort for Wonder Woman 1984, the studio has denied that the sequel will do anything other than play in theaters.

Despite reports that Wonder Woman 1984 could end up skipping theaters and heading straight to Digital or a streaming service like HBO Max, Warner Bros. is now rushing to deny that we won't see the sequel on the big screen. According to Indie Wire, the studio has "confirmed" that the sequel will indeed receive a full theatrical run.

Now, before we get too ahead of ourselves here, it's worth pointing out that The Wrap shared comments denying that it was the plan, and only said that it was something the studio is considering. While it may not be on the table right now, if theaters are still closed for the foreseeable future by June, then it could be that the studio comes to the conclusion that they have no other choice.

At the moment, Wonder Woman 1984 is still set to be released on June 5th, and if a change is coming, then we probably won't find out for at least a few more weeks.

A non-theatrical release would be an extreme and unexpected move for a film as big as this one, but we're living in strange times, and with everything from Onward to Bloodshot hitting Digital early over the next couple of weeks, Warner Bros. could end up making history.

The biggest question is whether Wonder Woman 1984 could possibly slip into 2021. It was originally due last year before being pushed back to this summer.

Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if it ends up not receiving a theatrical release, but we'll have to wait and see for now. What do you guys think could happen? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Probably best they hold out until we get back to some form of normality if they want a theatrical release.

do you guys think that when the quarantine lifts up, its going to create sort of a "rebound effect" causing people to rush out to the theaters massively, simply as a result of being indoors for months, regardless of whatever its showing. maybe ww 84 could benefit from that

@NicolausCopernicus - absolutely, no

@NicolausCopernicus - I think the first few films are going to benefit from it, but I doubt WW84 will be one of them. More like... Tenet?

Meaning that WW84 will probably move to Q4.

20m downloads at $40/pop isn't feasible?
JDL
JDL - 3/20/2020, 4:11 PM
@Reeds2Much - Nope, not feasible. At best, 5 to 10 million at $20 a pop is more likely. Further almost none of it will be overseas and only the most popular, no risk, movies need apply. WW84 isn't quite in that category when you have movies like BoP fouling the nest.

That title is so filled with double negatives it's confusing.

"Warner bros says they don't want to not give WW a digital release"

lol

@Nightwing1015 - "WB denies considering putting WW84 direct-to-video" makes more sense, although it wouldnt end up high on google then if people search for "wonder woman 84 release date"

Not surprised really. I'm guessing that by the end of July theaters are back up and running, but I dont see WW84 getting released then. Black Widow is prrobably also going for that timeframe (my guess), so I think october would suit WW84 better

@MalseMarcel - Can't see October because that's when the horror stuff is released. November or December maybe*, otherwise I'm thinking March 2021.

*unless a LOT of postponed stuff gets moved there.

@JDL -

December seems like the best fit if WW84 moves. WB already has Dune coming out against
Coming 2 America on December 18th. I believe WW84 has more mainstream appeal than
Dune and the studio can look back on how well Aquaman did as a December 2018 blockbuster.

Dune seems like a much better candidate for WB to move to a March 2021 release than WW 84.

@WarnerBrother - I agree on moving Dune* to Spring 2021. But if WB's wants December they better claim their date NOW. If Disney comes out this weekend and says Black Widow will open on 12/18 they, (WB), are screwed. Well unless they can somehow squeeze into early July 2020.

*Its probably way too late but if I was WB's I would have been finding my Mandalorian for HBO Max, and getting it made`and released before Dune opens.

@JDL - HBO Max has a show set in the Dune universe where the pilot's gonna be directed by Villeneuve

@tmp3 - That's a good move imo (obviously) :).
