Kevin Bacon Gives Us An Insight Into Matthew Vaughn's Directorial Style

The veteran actor, who plays the villain in X-Men: First Class, Sebastian Shaw speaks to Hero Complex about his involvement in the movie, and talks about what it's like being directed by the very candid Vaughn..

Mathew Vaughn has become something of a talking point to say the least here on CBM. His honest, and outspoken(cocky?) attitude have won him many fans, but also the ire of some who believe that he might be TOO interested in doing his own thing while not being faithful enough to the comics. Anyway, whichever side of the argument you come down on, to deny that the man is a talented and exciting director would be folly.

While chatting to LA Times' Hero Complex, Kevin Bacon speaks about what it was like working with the director..

“He’s not gentle in the way he directs, to say the least. Matthew would sit by the monitor and shout something that’s borderline insulting. But every time he said something — or screamed something — it was right on the mark.”

“He’s not like a ball coach, he’s not talking all the time, I could shoot an entire day and do a bunch of takes and he wouldn’t say anything. So it’s not like he’s constantly on you. There are directors who say a lot because they like the sound of themselves directing. They think that’s what directors do. He doesn’t have any of that. He doesn’t do a lot of takes. He does zero in on things. I remember once he yelled, ‘Stop twirling your mustache!’ And it was totally on point. I was starting to get into some kind of idea of villainy and not staying true to who Sebastian was. As an actor, I can appreciate that.”

X-Men: First Class would seem to be a hit..with the critics at least, we wont know how the general public feel until after it's release on June 3rd, But Bacon seems happy with it anyway..

“I was really pleased when I saw the final film, I’m very pleased to be in it, too, to say the least.”

Honestly, as much as I liked Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor, in the last act that is EXACTLY what Branagh should have been shouting at him!

I thought Loki at the end of Thor was right on the money. He no longer had to hide behind the facade of being a loyal son and brother, he was able to show his true colors.

soberchimera61- I felt showing his true colors was too much of a giveaway for what had happened. I'm sure he could have kept the facade and gotten away with it like Loki would in the books. The man's all about facades. For him to drop it seems a bit too easy and mustache twirly LOL He kinda became a caricature of his character IMHO.

@shaman, i thought it was ok ,after the side kick girl wore me out i thought the movie was good but just happy to see the Odinson on the big screen ,and actually fight like thor i think the only problem is they drooped the ball with the Donald Blake thing otherwise 8 out of ten stars . just go watch the death of the incredible hulk on youtube and tell me what we really are complaing about lol

Sasquatch123- Hahaha oh i'm not "complaining". I just agree that the last scene with Loki seemed a bit extreme and out of character when compared to all his other scenes in the film. He did great as an actor though and we're definitely oceans away from the Death of the Incredible Hulk LMFAO!!! IMHO, i enjoyed Thor as much if not more than the first Ironman, which is pretty high up on my top CBM list (both being higher than Nolan's batfilms btw ;)

For me, I just think he lost it. For the majority of the film I was watching Loki, when he began his histrionics I was watching an actor play Loki. Took me out of the character completely. Still loved the movie, just thought that was a bit disappointing. His script didn't help though, he was only short of saying..

"I was always weak and jealous, but now YOU must bow to me! WOOHOOHAHAAAAA

I'm looking forward to seeing what Kevin Bacon brings to the role.

As for Loki, I would have liked to have seen him remain the backround until maybe Thor 2. He's Marvel's verison of Lex Luthor: they both work better pulling the strings in the backround rather than fight the hero directly. But it was still a great film and I enjoyed it!
