Mark Millar Comments On THE WOLVERINE; Names TDKR Among His 'Best Of 2012'

The always outspoken writer has posted his best of 2012 list, and names a couple of superhero flicks among his top 3 movies. He also reveals that he has en 10 minutes of James Mangold's The Wolverine, and it sounds as if we should be excited..

Millar names The Grey as his favorite movie of 2012, but his 2nd and third picks were Chronicle and The Dark Knight Rises respectively. He offers high praise for Josh Trank's found-footage "superhero" flick, calling the final fight scene his "favourite conflict in a superhero movie ever". Here is what he has to say about Christopher Nolan's Batman swansong (Batsong?) in full..

"Third would have to be Dark Knight Rises. Controversial, I know, but I think this might be my favourite of all the Batman movies. It has it's problems, especially Nolan's reluctance to make Batman himself especially interesting, and the pay off with Bane SO anticlimactic after such a brilliant build up. But it's got so many good moments and was so incredibly ambitious that I think it clobbers Avengers in terms of pure cinema. Avengers was a very fun popcorn movie with a lot of good jokes, but in terms of actual scale and depth I think Dark Knight rises to the top for Summer 2012 for me."

Millar goes on to list The Amazing Spider-Man among his "misfires", but states that he didn't think it an outright bad movie, merely a step "backwards" for the genre because of the retelling of the origin story. Then, perhaps most interestingly, he comments on The Wolverine. "The script is amazing and Mangold is such a brilliant director," writes Millar. "Seen the first 10 mins and it looks like David Lean doing a superhero movie. This the one that's going to surprise people. This and First Class were Year Zero for the Fox Marvel movies as far as I'm concerned."

I to am looking forward to wolverine as I think the Japan story was one of the best in wolverine comic history so if they frick this up then I think this would be Jackman's last solo outing, there is a lot riding on this for everyone concerned.

It's Mark Millar. For him, verbal diarreha is a way of life.

For once I agree with him, All three films were excellent, all three had there flaws, all films do, you either enjoy it or you don't, (or you come on websites and troll making yourself sound emo, cool and sarcastic)

I just don't get Millar's point. Forget the Avengers comparison for a now.

He admits TDKR had an underdeveloped protagonist and an anti-climactic resolution for its antagonist but he thinks its the best of the Nolan Batman trilogy? Better than Batman Begins which actually explored the interesting aspects of Bruce Wayne's character in major detail. Better than The Dark Knight which had a brilliant climactic resolution for its major villain, the Joker.

Give me a well constructed narrative with well-fleshed character archs anytime of the day over a movie which tries to be epic and fails at the basic aspects of storytelling.

He could not have been more correct-The Avengers was just a "fun" film.

TDKR has scale and depth to it!

He says the Amazing Spider-Man was a misfire because they retold the origin story. Aren't they going to have to retell the origin story in Fantastic Four?

ComixBookGuy - 12/19/2012, 3:56 AM
Mark Millar is lining up Joe Carnahan to direct Nemesis, Josh Trank is set for The Fantastic Four, and he's also got Matthew Vaughn to direct The Secret Service.

I'd rather spend money having "fun" than watching miserable self obsessed so-called hero. And no doubt he will say Days of Future Past will be the best superhero film of all time.

@ELgUaSoN

Agreed. The "popcorn flick" comment makes no sense. We all get that Nolan's Batman trilogy was about how the rise of an exceptional, transcendental figure in a chaotic environment could inspire an entire people to a greater purpose than themselves. But his film were made to be action thriller blockbusters.

If TASM had not had the origin story it would have been way better.

There was simply no need to recover that ground.

With the MOSI can understand after sooooo many years and misfires inbetween that a retelling of the origin was in order...

RamonSuarez - 12/19/2012, 4:12 AM
@TheYoungMan

The problem with your argument is that the main protagonist arch rested on Bane, not Talia. Nolan essentially spent the vast majority of the film to set up his main, indestructible villain only to turn him into a lackey henchman at the end with an inconsequential death.

That's bad story-telling. And don't even get me started on the overuse of exposition in setting up the character.

@tazmaniak

I actually agree with Millar on this point. The difference is that the original Fantastic Four movie f-cked up their origin story badly whereas the original Spiderman movie told it beautifully. TASM had nothing new or interesting to add to the previous origin movie and it showed in the film. I think there is still room to tell a kickass origin tale for the FF4 the way there was for Nolan to explore Batman's origin.

DREDD was the best CBM of the year without doubt

Chronicle was great, definetly one of my favourite super power movies and in all honesty I enjoyed it more than TDKR (a fine end to nolans trilogy but not without its faults) and The Avengers (i left halfway thru wen seeing it at the cinema but on later veiws i enjoyed it more but i still dont get the ridiculous amount of praise thats heaped on it, the alien army shouldve been built up to be way more threatening, lokis magic stick/hawkeye was a pretty feeble idea, Capts suit was abysmal, it was all just a little to hammy for me... saying that its more rewatchable than TDKR which is in my opinion still the better film)

Dredd was by far my favourite CBM of the year, with Chronicle (the final scene is as close to a good Akira adaptation as were gonna get) a close 2nd

Spideyguy94 - 12/19/2012, 4:51 AM
I think TDKR is a good movie, but it's nothing special, unique or new. Compare it to batman begins and the dark knight and its no were near as good a film. BB and TDK have got really tight scripts, TDKR has a lot of huge problems, and they are problems that you just wouldn't see in the other 2. When I walked out of the cinema I thought it was amazing, but as soon as I started talking about it I really started to see its problems. I think it's trying to hard to be bigger than the other 2. Had this been made by someone other than Nolan it wouldn't get the recognition it does.

Watching so many, those who have not accomplished anything near as great, trying to bring down the dominant force at the top is truly hilarious.

I now have little hope for FOX's CBM ambitions if this gut is in charge.

Too many opinions and too many people fighting for their opinions to be heard and accepted, show me a person who loves Avengers and I can show you two who hated it, simple as that, Yes TDKR has its problems, does it make me hate the movie or not want to watch it again, HELL NO. (Green Lantern can go to hell and so can Ryan Reynolds and Martin Campbell, making me wait my whole life to see GL on screen and then serving up that tripe) If you hate either film fine, its your opinion you are not wrong or right, but some people on here using marvelites and nolanites instantly stop me reading their comment as I have them down as 40stone loser 17yr olds in the parent basement, probably on another site slagging off the thing they were only just praising.

@TheYoungMan

Sorry, but its not just an issue of opinion. Writing a movie, like designing a house, incorporates certain well established principles. You need a strong foundation for successfully constructing both and The Dark Knight Rises doesn't have it. The narrative dealt with Bane's centrality as a villain - his quest for power, vengeance, and destruction and how this tied to Batman's larger arch as a now reluctant hero returning from obscurity. But by the end we find his plot was just an act of revenge at the behest of a poorly fleshed villainess who sought vengeance for the death of a father she didn't even like. Then all of the sudden the character is dispatched in a very disposable fashion like a henchman. This is a poorly designed arch. If TDKR had been a house it would have been slanted.

Tedious over-melodramatic dialogue.

Ridiculous intelligence insulting plot contrivances.

Abysmally bad choreographed, filmed, and edited fight/ action scenes.

Terrible pacing to the point of sleep inducing boredom.

A thoroughly uninteresting and out-of-character protagonist.

No sense of feeling a comicbook or its iconic characters brought to life.

B&R level nonsense, e.g., miracle healing broken back, magically appearing motorcycles in the stock exchange, day changing to night in minutes to facilitate Batman's appearance, etc., etc., etc.

Yet the 'serious tone' and 'ambition of scale' make it a great movie??!??

Well done nolan. Your ability to fool the feeble-minded masses and the pseudo-intellectual high rankers knows no bounds.

Coldblood6 - 12/19/2012, 5:24 AM
It's also obvious that since the tdk franchise ended in defeat, the MCU is now, by a great margin, the dominant force in CBM cinema, and he needs to knock that down a notch so that he can greater elevate FOX's projects.

Nice article yes TDKR is a awesome movie I luv it. I mean so many of you get bent out of shape when people talk about The Avengers not being their top film but jumped on the Kevin Smith band wagon when he said he like The Avengers a little more than TDKR & now Millar expresses his opinion and some of you get bent out of shape.

Grow up people have the right to their opinion. I agree with Millar. The Dark Knight Rises for me however is my top film of the year & as long as I like it that's what counts to me & apparently looking at the box office figures many more if not all approved ;)

ArtisticErotic - 12/19/2012, 5:32 AM
I agree with him.

Rises had it's problems but it had a lot good moments.

Avengers was fun but it's not something I would call brillaint or inventive, in fact none of them phase one Marvel movies arem, hopefully phase 2 improves on that.

TheDetectiveComicRises
TheDetectiveComicRises - 12/19/2012, 5:32 AM
@Coldblood6 TDKR did not end in defeat it is tiring comparing TDKR to The Avenger & vice versa you have one franchise beginning and one ending & be careful about the MCU not by a great margin because if what I am seeing from Man of Steel from the trailer is what's to come the DCU is allowing one flagship Superhero "The Batman" pass it on to another "Superman" & the future looks bright ;)
ArtisticErotic

Yeah I will say it, Chronicle was better than both It may not have had the big Budgets that Rises and Avengers had but it had much more heart.

"Managing to keep any leaps of logic more grounded than any film from the same genre."

Right there is where you lost me. I let the point about utilizing the characters to their fullest extent because that is for the most part true with a few notable exceptions (Bane, and Talia). But the leaps in logic in TDKR are mind-blowingly bad. The entire bad guy plot makes zero sense at all. None.
