THE NEW MUTANTS Hits The U.S. With Dismal $8 Million Opening Weekend; TENET Debuts To $40 Million Overseas

The box office numbers are in for The New Mutants after it opened in select cities this past Friday, while we also have more intel on what happened when Disney got their hands on the Fox movie...

After countless delays, The New Mutants finally arrived in U.S. theaters on Friday. Now, Deadline reports that the Marvel movie earned $3.1 million on Friday, the best opening day since March. It's projected to make a dismal $8 million (possibly less) by the end of the weekend, but by today's standards, that not the worst opening. It will, however, be interesting seeing how Tenet compares.

If that does considerably more, then it will be clear that there's only a very limited number of people willing to go to theaters. However, if it does better than that, then it's clear The New Mutants hasn't generated much interest (bear in mind that current projections peg Tenet at $25+ million).

Overseas, Tenet had a Wednesday - Sunday opening of $40+ million as theaters are open in a lot of key territories. However, as a five-day opening goes, those numbers are understandably dreadful. They have, however, exceeded expectations to some extent, but this one turning a profit seems unlikely.

Going back to The New Mutants, it's said that the idea of extending the movie into some sort of series at Hulu was considered, but ultimately scrapped. A co-financing deal with TSG meant it would have to play on the big screen, but as the trade notes, "when New Mutants arrived at Disney, Marvel Boss Kevin Feige didn’t put his fingerprints on the movie to fix it."

Did you head to the theater this weekend?

There's another Fox X-Men movie that's not being well received?

gambgel
gambgel - 8/30/2020, 4:30 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - if the same movie was made by Marvel Studios, I would bet money that the same critics would rate it very differently.
Thats how these so called critics are really. Its all about the agenda.

8 mil is a great opening for a pandemic considering that NY and CA our biggest money making states are still closed. this article is so bias. even if you dont like the film, you have to acknowledge that it exceeded expectations and bring back people to theaters.

gambgel - 8/30/2020, 5:50 AM
@mastakilla39 - yeah. If NM is making 8m in the midle of a pandemic, in normal circunstances, it would do $30m, at least.

@MosquitoFarmer - Fox would have done reshoots before releasing this. Disney chose to release this as is.
LeonNova

@gambgel - When Fox makes a good X-Men film like Days Of Future Past, Logan, or Deadpool, they get good reviews. When they make a terrible movie like Origins: Wolverine or Dark Phoenix, they get terrible reviews. Marvel Studios doesn’t get terrible reviews, because they don’t make terrible movies. This theory that Disney pays critics and they have a vendetta against Fox is ridiculous, and if it were true, films like Maleficent II wouldn’t have gotten panned.

Proud of them that they persevered to debut the film in cinemas.

@kitheka - You're proud that they met the contractual obligations that required them to show it in a theater? I'm afraid there's is no such altruism here my friend.

@Tensorpants - yes, you can make anything bad through warping whats actually done.

For example, currently you're using advanced technology to try and force others to follow your ideology. Starting to see how that sounds?

MasterMix
MasterMix - 8/30/2020, 7:05 AM
@RokoVII - No, it's pretty lousy. Then again I didn't have much faith in it to begin with. It's neither scary, nor super. The only thing that was worth it was going to a theater to see a movie.

$40m overseas is just a very early estimate, I've seen other estimates peg it at $47-48m which would be a pretty solid opening considering it's more dependent on legs than opening big, and it still hasn't opened in China yet

@tmp3 - china was tracking for 45-50 milion, could open bigger if word of mouth is great there

Another Fox movie with bargain bin versions of X-men characters, another failure. At least it’s the last one. Now the X-men can actually begin to live up to their potential with Marvel Studios behind the wheel.

Tenet is such a ridiculously bonkers joyride of a movie it deserves to be seen by more people. It's kind of a shame it's release ended up smack bang in the middle of a pandemic, because it's pure cinematic spectacle which really needs to be seen on the big screen with a big audience. It's audaciously mad, silly and oh so much fun. Probably the first movie in a long while that I would seriously consider going to the cinema a second time for.
SnideCut
SnideCut - 8/30/2020, 5:52 AM
@528491 - I do not think it was a joyride in any way shape or form. It had a decent central concept that was overriden by laughable dialogue, paper-thin characters and absolutely horrendous sound-mixing where most of the dialogue wasn't even audible.
528491
528491 - 8/30/2020, 6:03 AM
@SnideCut - I agree with you about the sound mixing, and in actual fact I'd agree with you about the other points too - I think that's why I characterised it as a "joyride" ... The metaphor is not one that insinuates a lot of high cerebral consideration or emotional attachment to the characters, it's more of a "buckle up and enjoy the thrill" sort of a metaphor, and in that sense Tenet delivers by the bucketload.

I'm usually not one to forgive a bad movie because it's supposed to be "dumb fun that you aren't supposed to think about" but I think Tenet is just so audacious in its madness that it just about pulls it off.

I didn't expect Feige and Marvel to fix a damn thing with New Mutants.🤣 But I did expect them to release it on the Disney Plus streaming service. Perhaps they could've just charged like $4.99 to stream it, and made a small profit. By releasing it in theaters, they actually have to pay the theaters, whereas dumping it on Disney Plus, wouldn't have cost them a cent. If that's accurate, then somebody should be fired, or at least get yelled at. That's straight up incompetence.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - Did you miss the line “A co-financing deal with TSG meant it would have to play on the big screen”? Contracts are contracts. Fox made the deal, Disney had to honor it.

@TheUnworthyThor - and now that it has, they should be able to capitalize on a stream at home offering
