THE WOLVERINE Sequel Will Explore The Father/Son Relationship Between 'Xavier' & 'Logan'

We already knew that Patrick Stewart would be making an appearance as Charles Xavier in the follow up to James Mangold's The Wolverine, but from the sounds of things he's going to have a much bigger role.

Collider has managed to get some very interesting updates from Hugh Jackman relating to his final time the claws and muttonchops as everyone's favourite mutant berserker, Wolverine.

It was previously all but confirmed that Charles Xavier would factor into the plot of James Mangold's The Wolverine sequel, but according to Jackman the "quasi-father/son relationship" between the two long-time friends will be explored, and we'll be seeing something "very different" from Sir Patrick Stewart's take on the wheelchair-bound Professor.

The Aussie actor also says that, although he's very happy with how things are coming along, he doesn't want to fully commit to shooting the movie until everything he envisions for his last turn as Logan is just right.

“I’ll be really honest with you, the actual script in its full form we’re up to about Page 60. Obviously there’s a treatment, so it’s not fully done yet, we’re not fully there. Patrick does figure in it that’s for sure. I think it’s a really important relationship but I want to see signs of that quasi-father/son sort of relationship that has not been seen before, and sides of particularly Professor X that have not been seen before. So we have some really, really cool ideas.”

There's still persistent rumors that this will be a loose adaptation of Mark Millar's Old Man Logan, but - aside from Jackman's taken-out-of-context SDCC quotes - nobody involved has offered any confirmation of that yet. Could Xavier take over Hawkeye's role in that story, perhaps? let us know what you think of all of this in the usual place.

I already know that this news won't sit well with many hardcore X-Men fans because the "Father/Son" role of Professor X and Cyclops is more girthier and weightier than the mentor relationship that Wolverine and Prof. X share.

So how does the timeline work on this? Does this take place in the version of the future existing after DOFP?

Because Singer [frick]ed up the Cyclops Xavier relationship....thats the TRUE father son relationship. The depth of their bond is so significant in the comics.

The father/son relationship should give the screenwriters plenty of opportunities to show Logan weeping or sobbing.

I'm fine with this, although it will be interesting to explore this if the rumors are true that this will take inspiration from Old Man Logan.

I always thought Wolverine 3 should've been Logan truly looking to clean up his past affairs, with Yukio, as he alluded to at the end of THE WOLVERINE. He should look into weapon x and discover vast secrets...maybe X23 is a new breed of weapon. Throw Omega Red in there, allude to he and Logan's past.

I've lost interest in the X-men movies generally, but for Hugh Jackman I'll give this one the benefit of the doubt. I really really hope that Hugh and the crew give us a badass Wolverine. Wolverine shouldn't be invincible, what makes him a badass is he doesn't know when he's beat. Also please keep Simon "the hack" Kinberg as far away as humanly possible.

Even though this film has many question marks surrounding the many different directions that they could've went with this being the last flick I think that we should all consider that this does NOT necessarily mean that Cyclops will remain out of the picture. With X-Men: Apocalypse underway we're being brought to an entirely new cast of the same iconic characters that we've had for a while. Only way I see Cyclops getting "true" justice and less drama is if there's a different writer/director at the helm of the character. Cyclops needs more action and more teamwork tactic skills similar to the way he was portrayed within the first X-Men film (which actually wasn't that bad) they've got the movie magic to really give us some glorified battles now, but that's IF they understand the instruments they're orchestrating here.

This does not sound exciting at all. They're seriously just coasting off the first X-men movie all those years ago, and that tells me they're creatively stifled. Oh, and also lazy, I hope the movie is good but The Wolverine was one of the biggest comic book movie disappointments for me personally in a long time.

Wolverine and Charles' "Father-Son" relationship over the true father-son relationship "Scott-Charles"? Yep.. Fox-men fanboys will eat this shit right up

As a huge X-men fan I never felt like they had a father/son relationship. it was more like brothers than anything to me.

I'm okay with it. Actually if Wolverine has to say goodbye to someone (well Jean aside) it's Xavier. I really want that film to be good!

Truth be told at least Mangold made wolverine a little more badass, so hopefully this film will see him berserk out. If not there's always hope for Tom hardy
