The box office for this weekend are in! X-Men: First Class, the latest prequel to the highly successful X-Men trilogy, has officially opened at #1 at the United States box office, with an expected $56 million. While it's not overwhelming (X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened to $85 million when it was released in 2009), it's still in line with what 20th Century Fox has expected. Reuters has the following to say...

The opening for X-Men: First Class was in line with the studio's relatively modest expectations but paled against most of the other films in the Marvel comic book franchise. The previous one opened to $85 million two years ago.

Sales data was not immediately available from the film's foreign showings in 75 countries.

So do you think that the film deserved the money it got (assuming most of you have seen it already)? Anyways, X-Men: First Class is out now at your local theater!

Definately better than Thor

When adjusting for ticket prices it opened about the same as batman begins. Another "reboot" of a franchise where the last two films left a bad taste in people's mouths. Once word of mouth got out that BB was great it had really good legs and made over $200 mil and ofcourse spawned a sequel that is the most successful comicbook movie of all time (money wise). So if FC performs the same as BB it'll be fine. If not it will be dissapointing indeed cause it really is great.

X-Men First Class fall under as a prequel not a reboot like Batman Begins.

as a prequel it will do better then Wolverine.

The first X Men movie back in 2000 got 54 million its opening weekend. Granted that is 2 million more than the first movie, but add inflation and that is close to 67 million.

X-2 got 85 million in 2003, X Men 3 set a then Memorial Day weekend record at 102. Wolverine got 85 million (dropped off the following week cause Star Trek opened big)

56 Million and with Super 8, Green Lantern & Cars 2 opening the next few weeks, this film might be lucky to get 150 million at the box office.

Box Office

X Men, 54 million opening on 7-14-00, 157 million in the US (296 including international box office) number 8 overall grossing US film in 2000

X-2: X Men United: 85 million opening weekend on 5-2-03, 214 million US (407 overall worldwide) 6th highest grossing film of 2003

X Men 3: The Last Stand opened on 5-26-06 (Memorial Day Weekend) to a then record for that weekend 102 million. 236 million US (459 including global box office) and 4th highest grossing film in the US in 2006.

Wolverine opened 5-1-09 to 85 million, 179 million in the US (373 globally) and was the 13th highest grossing film of 2009.

I do not expect First Class to crack the top 10 this year at all.

BTW I saw it, it would have been a good movie to me if it was the FIRST X-Men movie, but since it is a direct prequel, there was WAY too many continuity issues in it. Plus since X-Men's cash cow Wolverine was not a major player in this film (I know he had a cameo but who pays money to see a cameo) it turned audiences away cause he is the most popular X-Men character. Think about it, when you mention X-Men to people, the first name that pops out is Wolverine 99 % of the time.

It was not better than Thor IMO.

Haven't seen it yet but probably will later today, so I can't weigh in on which film is better. FC is gonna have to be really good to beat Thor imo, cause I actually thought Thor was better than Ironman.

Enjoyed this more than Thor. It had more going on in it. I enjoyed Thor a lot, but the Earth scenes did feel kinda meh. Asgardian scenes=Epic. Hemsworth as Thor is perfect casting, along side Fassbender as Magneto.

I also had to go out of my way to see this movie. Their wasn't a midnight showing at my local theater. In fact, their wasn't many midnight showings in my state. Which I found very odd. Hope it makes a lot of $$$ before GL hits. I want a sequel to this.

X-Men first class is indeed a reboot. It is just too obvious. At least in Matthew Vaughn's mind IMO and that is clearly shown with the more serious and intelligent tone this X-Men flick displays unlike any of the 4 previous movies that were more adventurous and lighthearted movies.

See: http://xmenfilms.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/matthew-vaughn-calls-x-men-first-class-a-mixture-of-prequel-and-reboot/

I think there's some sort of confusion among people because Vaughn has not clearly said it's a reboot and I think it's due to the fact that he hasn't enough control on the franchise to say things like that. If X-Men first class exceeds the expectations of Fox at the BO, I think Vaughn will gain enough power to say to Fox that this is indeed a new X-Men franchise that started with XMFC and that they will continue forward with it.

And quite frankly, this could be good news. I mean, I understand that some people are pissed towards FOX about the fact that this is not the real X-Men first class but Matthew Vaughn has really nothing to do with it. The guy was hired and had like 9 months to make the movie. Actually it's Singer and the studios who chose the mutants in this movie. From what I've heard, I actually think Vaughn decided to make this movie because he felt that he needed to finish the work he began in the past with the franchise, to respect an agreement.

SO that being said, are the liberties took in XMFC worst than the liberties they took so far with the 4 previous movies of the franchise; making Sabretooth and Wolverine brothers and especially BASTARDIZING the X-Men greatest leader Cyclops to name a few. I don't think so. I've seen the movie because I want to support Matthew Vaugn's work so he can bring a new philosophy to the franchise and gain control on it. I've never been a big fan of Singer's work for the simple reason that to me making the true leader of the X-Men a dead pussy is a true MESS. Who knows? Maybe Vaughn will get Cyclops right if he introduces him in one of its sequels, Maybe Iceman will be the jokester he is in the comics, maybe Rogue will be the badass she actually is? No one knows for sure but one thing is clear to me, I prefer to see what future lies with the X-Men with Matthew Vaughn at the helm than to see another chapter of the last franchise with Singer and Fox at the helm.

Finally saw it. I think it's a good movie, but as a CBM, I like Thor better. I thought it (Thor) was the perfect balance between comic book lore and director/studio vision. This first class movie had a lot of useless ppl in it to me (Oliver platt, riptide, angel, rose bryne, etc). I liked shaw, tho he was never explained really and magneto and prof x were good.

Definitely better than the last two xmen
