X-Men: First Class Opens Up To A Worldwide Total Of $120 Million!

Thanks to CBM's own superdog for the heads up!

Filmonic report that Matthew Vaughn's critically acclaimed contribution to the X-Men franchise is set to make around $120 million worldwide during it’s opening weekend. The official numbers won't actually be available until early next week, but it's currently believed that X-Men: First Class brought in roughly $56 million at the US box office and $64 million elsewhere from 74 territories.

"The movie really excelled in successfully launching a brand new chapter in the X-Men franchise, or new beginning if you will," Fox senior vice president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said.

The fact that the movie opened on a Wednesday internationally is bound to have helped these figures, and with a budget of $160 million, it's looking likely that the movie will make a tidy profit which will surely ensure a sequel.

Starring James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme, Lucas Till as Alex Summers/Havok, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Oliver Platt as the Man in Black, Jason Flemyng as Azazel and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart, X-Men: First Class is out now!

where did it make 64 million from

it does pretty decent, Don't mind a sequel long as Vaughn, Goldman, Fass and Mcavoy are involved. And I hope to god they actually give Vaughn a longer production time, a lot of the CG you could tell was rushed.

Fantstic! I wonder who they'll introduce in the next one? I'd love to See Dazzler, and i'd love to see em fight the sentinals, along with Magneto, so we can see some serious action!

AWESOME! Sequel has got to happen. As long as Vaugn, Fassbender, and Mcavoy are back. I'm sold.

Excellent! I'm up for a sequel, just not one set in the 60s yet again. Age the characters a bit & set it in the 70s. Lets get some Sinister in there now... Maybe some event that will push Erik & Charles further apart. CUz to me, how the movie ended didn't necessarily say they parted as bitter enemies, just as two people with different views. I wanna see what will make Fassbender's magneto become McKellen's Magneto

@genesis609

quicksilver and scarlet cant not be used in The Avenger since they are mutants and part of the x-Men universe they belong to FOX Studio not Marvel Studio.

Intruder-So what? Theirs no familiar faces in this movie aside from a cameo or two. It's a new start. Plus X-3 and Wolverine probably have made people sick of X-Men anyway from how bad they were.

Word of mouth will be helping this film a lot. :D Best CBM of 2011 so far, IMO.

It's a bit of a disappointing start, honestly. (And somewhat dubious, as it generated that extra $1.5m domestically to avoid the phrase "lowest opening in franchise history" from appearing in all of the write ups today. Not that a studio would inflate estimates to manage press...) Hopefully word of mouth will give it legs.

This isn't at all disappointing. When you take away the fact it wasn't in 3D, it's probably about equal with Thor if that had also been released in 2D.

superdog - 6/5/2011, 11:45 AM
When you adjust for Thors inflated prices due to 3D and IMAX they pretty much opened exactly the same. Plus as seems to be the case lately international gross is accounting for a higher percentage. With super 8 and GL not opening all at once next week and the week after that they will not have much of an impact on the overall gross.

@Tea, you really know how to put things in perspective

and I hadn't seen Thor yet, I thought I would wait till June 17th cause its my b-day and see Thor, X-men, and Gl all on the same day, but I don't think i can take it anymore, I'm gonna watch thor this afternoon. And BTW, I felt the same way about the first X-men movie, It was great the first time, but got less and less impressive with multiple viewings.
Blackmatter
Blackmatter - 6/5/2011, 11:51 AM
Thing about fu ckin Thor was it was too short of a flick for no longer than he had or didnt have his powers so my guess is if it wouldve been about 15 -20 mins longer with him kicking somebody elses head in it wouldve been better than TIH (PRB)

Different strokes for different folk i suppose, I thought Thor was sick. Very entertaining. Still not sold on first class tho, may wait for a rental. Next for me is GL!!!!

I wanted to go to see even though I was against about this movie, but when I learn about the Wolverine cameo I just felt uninteresting. Don't get me wrong, I see the video with the cameo and it is good, but I am just sick of Wolverine. I don't even like Jackman as Wolverine. For the first movie where it was with Mane as Sabertooth when they were together they felt like Wolverine and Sabertooth, but that because Mane is too tall. They should find a smaller actor for Wolverine.

This movie was a pleasant surprise. I was one the many complainers about this film not using the original five but I will give credit where credit is due. The movie is a winner, it kept the audience interested and it featured shocking moments as well. The cameos were okay but Magneto steals this show, very good portrayal of the Master of Magnetism. Now does this mean we will never see The Oriignal Five students of Charles Xaivier all together on screen. I'm hopeful but in the mean time we can enjoy this First Class of X-Men!

I always thought it funny that the US box office total is compared to the box office total of the rest of the world. I know its in English, which limits showings in other countries, but still...

That could only happen if Marvel owned the rights to use those characters in films..... which they don't, FOX does because they're original X-Men characters. Sorry bout it.

Anyone who thinks first class wouldn't have gotten a $20 million bump from
3D and IMAX is kidding themselves.

@ megabatfan: I'm liking your ideas for possible sequels...

...one word : "Genosha"....

...yet I can't agree that Professor Xavier and Magneto EVER became "bitter enemies".

Even Sir Ian McKellen's version of Magneto never regarded Xavier with hatred. It's always been their worldview regarding the treatment of mutants (and what they saw as the "solutions" to same) that fuels them often being on opposing sides.

Each of the X-men films thus far has had this presented to some degree.

This is highlighted in Singer's X2 where it's shown that Professor X had been visiting Magneto in prison to play chess well after the Master of Magnetism had be captured.

It's more than the first X-Men made.
Honestly,I think Marvel needs to be more careful with their release dates.
It's pretty much a fact that Deathly Hallows part 2 is going to crush the box office this summer.Even though Captain America is released a week later, it will still be really hard to compete with Harry Potter.

X-men opened early Internationally, here in the UK we got previews on Monday and official opened last Wednesday.

Not a great opening even considering the worldwide total but it's not how you start, it's how you finish. In a Few weeks this game is gonna belong to Transformers and Harry Potter while everything else fights for crumbs.
