While many of us are used to the awkward game of give and take involved with character rights being held by a different company, it would seem like Disney and Marvel Studios has taken things to a new level with asking XM Studios to cancel production on their various figures.

Singapore-based XM Studios has made various Marvel collectibles over the years, including epic dioramas featuring various Marvel heroes and villains

In a statement made on Facebook, the company said:

Folks, it's been a sad day for us... due to reasons we aren't at liberty to disclose, we have been asked to put a hard stop to all X-Men characters for now. That means Cable can't be released, and neither can the awesome Sentinel Diorama which we've all been so looking forward to. Still, we continue to have faith that this isn't an indefinite red light forever and you can have our promise we will be back to producing these dream pieces once the coast is clear - no matter how long it takes!

Through a follow-up with Bleeding Cool it's been confirmed that the Galactus/Avengers diorama which featured the Fantastic Four has also been cancelled. The Phoenix statue is still going ahead.

IT would seem fairly obvious that this is somewhat tied to Fox and their current holding of the film rights of both the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and related characters. We've seen some mild repurcussions on the surrounding comics, and so on; but this is an unfair gesture to collectors of these various statues and dioramas who are now forced to either wait this out, or find another item.

As has been th case with this dispute between Marvel and 20th Century Fox, the only group to truly lose here are the fans.

Disney owns the merchandising rights for the X-Men and FF. Fox wouldn't be able to ask anyone to stop making these products.

This is also why we'll never see that X-Men show. Marvel/Disney want to [frick] with Fox as much as possible.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for pointing out that Disney and Marvel Studios hold the rights. I updated the article to reflect that.

Cheers,

I don't think this is true at all

How can FOX cancel COMIC BOOK toys?
They only own the movie rights

What shocks me is that, movies are movies. I think we all (begrudgingly) accept the current situation. However, now comics and collectibles are affected. It's starting to get ridiculous.

This isn't FOX doing, they have no control over it.

Its Marvel

@blackandyellow Disney doesn't have the merchandizing rights. That's all tied up at Fox.

@Bulldawg2014

That's contrary to every report about the licensing rights. Where'd you get that information?

Specifically the profits are.

@blackandyellow maybe marvel has production rights but everything I've ever read says that fox is the one that profits from all related merchandising to their superhero prosperities. I know half of the reason sony was struggling to keep spidey profitable was because marvel got all merchandizing revenues and I'm pretty sure that at least the revenues are different in the fox situation.

@Bulldawg2014

Marvel owns ALL merchandising rights to all their characters, both those tey have at home, as well as any properties currently licenced to Fox and Sony. Marvel never gave up toy rights, just live action film rights.

I just don't get why why people can't just fricking share the characters. It won't be confusing in the movie verse if your not a dumbass. The fans dicerve better than what Marvel and fox give us. Example. Stop making us sit through two hours of an origin story we already know!!! If normal people don't get then screw them. They aren't the ones you need to impress.

" If normal people don't get then screw them. They aren't the ones you need to impress."

Are you serious? Those "normal" people are the ones that make up 95% of the movie-going audience. They ARE the ones that studios need to impress. They already know that us geeks, nerds, and dweebs are going to see the movies anyway.

read about this yesterday somewhere

Makes business sense to hurt your competitor anyway you can, sucks if you were going to buy that stuff though.

I'm sorry but I could care less about this. If the rights issue is the base for this animosity with FOX -then all the power to Marvel. Marvel has a good relationshp with other studios like SONY and Universal -but I feel FOX has gone out of their way to make it hard for Marvel to keep a friendly relationship open. FOX sued them over the television rights to "Mutant X" awhile back (and won!) and wasn't willing to work with Marvel during the rights swap for Daredevil and Galactus/Silver Surfer. FOX corporate has made it VERY clear over the years they want no relatinshp with Marvel over their X-Men and Fantastic Four licenses. SO why is it bad that Marvel is snipping their cord with FOX.

It obviously is a no-win situation for fans. But I see this more FOX wanting to keep their autonomy from a direct competitior (Disney). It would be nice this relationship was a two-way street. For all the hate Marvel gets -no one questions what part FOX had in creating this animosity between the studios. So in this situation, if Marvel wants to sever any tie with FOX -I'm all for it. To me, they've tried to work with FOX -but that company clearly didn't want to make it work with Marvel.

If others see it differently, that's fine. For me, I cannot see a situation that FOX or Marvel Studios could ever work out their differences. At least in most of our lifetimes. As long as FOX micro-manages these franchises to the point that they can make maximum profit to their company -they never need ask for Marvel's support. So why should Marvel make any effort in return. FOX makes no profit on X-Men merchandice -so does FOX even care on this issue. All this does is make Marvel look like the the bad guy and that works to FOX's favor. Then again, I doubt even Marvel cares at this point and I don't fault them for it.
