Indiana Jones 5 was recently given a new release date by Disney, but screenwriter David Koepp - who was hired last September - has now confirmed he's no longer part of the long-delayed fifth instalment!

Indiana Jones 5 has been hit by delay after delay, and been through its fair share of writers and directors to boot. Last September, it was reported that Spider-Man scribe David Koepp had signed on to pen a new draft, but he's now confirmed to Collider that the hiring of director James Mangold means he's no longer involved in a creative capacity.

"When James Mangold came in...he deserves a chance to take his shot at it," Koepp revealed. "I'd done several versions with Steven [Spielberg]. And when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it."

Fans weren't thrilled by Spielberg's creative decisions in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so Mangold now taking a crack at the iconic character is news which could be welcomed.

Jonathan Kasdan and Dan Fogelman were both tasked to write separate drafts of the screenplay before departing Indiana Jones 5, and Spielberg was attached to direct before walking away from the project in February. It was then that Mangold was enlisted to take charge of the franchise.

As of now, the next Indiana Jones film is set to be released in theaters on June 29, 2022.

Disney: "So Harry, looks like Indy 5 is gonna be delayed a bit again. OK?"

"the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it"

So entrust the final film to a guy who has never written an Indiana Jones film before instead of using Spielberg and Koepp's story/script.

Still not sure how I feel about this. Mangold is an excellent director but Indiana Jones feels synonymous with Spielberg - it'll be weird not having him in the director's chair, especially for what is presumably the last one

@AC1 - I really don’t think this will be the last one.
Disney payed a fortune (and glory haha) for Lucasfilm, and believe you me if there’s a dollar to be made and a franchise to continue it’s gonna happen.
Some of the most popular Disney Park rides are based on the Indy IP, and there are rumours of a planned Indy “Mini land” happening in Orlando.
I just hope for the love of Shiva that the films continue to tell the story of Henry Walton Jones Jr. and not some new guy/girl that takes on the name and franchise - yuk

@Spidernoir - oh yeah that's fair, no franchise ever really ends in Hollywood, but I doubt Harrison Ford will wanna do any more after this one. So if I rephrase, it's weird his (probable) last appearance as Indy is gonna be without Spielberg.

I really wonder what terrain this movie is gonna venture in. In any case, I hope this movie sees the return of Short Round (I recently saw Temple of Doom again, and although it kinda faltered in the second half, Short Round was great throughout)

It was already too long a delay between films when Kingdom of The Crystal Skull came out! Harrison Ford's gettin' OLD, doggonnit! 😭

@Lem1 - I think they need to let go of the idea of Harrison Ford staring in any future films. I hate reboots and a recast just seems disrespectful. Maybe its just time to let it go altogether.

This film feels so incredibly unnecessary. Jones is one of cinema's greatest protagonists, and he already had a great send-off with The Last Crusade, and a bad send-off with Crystal Skull. Do we really need another "Indy rides into the sunset" tale?

@tmp3 - Not only unnecessary, but borderline ridiculous. Ford is almost 80 years old. 80! Not exactly what I conjure when I think of one of them great action heroes in film history.

This sounds like a whole lot of No.
If Steven Spielberg is out, then just leave it be or rectify why he left to bring him back. Otherwise, leave it be.

The Indiana Jones movies are my all time favourite movies (yes I even enjoy Crystal Skull) But the only way I can see this film working is with two parallel stories that are interwoven.. so partly set in the late 60s with Ford (more mystic element - with some moderate action) and part set in the 40s with a younger actor playing Indy in his OSS days (more action heavy) - that way they can continue the franchise with the new actor set in the Nazi punching past.

What I would absolutely HATE is if they choose to go with a “passing the torch” continuation and a new character takes over the franchise - then it wouldn’t really make sense with the Indiana Jones name any longer.
