George Miller Dishes On His Plans For Two Potential MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Sequels

A few days ago, Mad Max creator George Miller briefly revealed that he has penned two scripts for a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2015 blockbuster, Fury Road

Though Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the year's biggest surprises, it took years for writer/director George Miller to bring his vision to screen, with production initially set to commence all the way back in 2001. Shortly after Fury Road's theatrical release, Miller revealed that he'd already started work on a follow-up with the working title Mad Max: The Wasteland, and here explains that the seeds for the sequel were sewn within the 2015 film.

As Fury Road's production stopped and started, Miller "dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artefacts and things like that." The exploration into his world of Mad Max resulted in the creation of two scripts, though of which will become The Wasteland, Miller is uncertain. "So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying," he says. "We're talking to the studio about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I'm not so sure."

However, as he's previously stated, we shouldn't expect Miller to crank out a new Mad Max instalment instantly, as the 70-year-old filmmaker is looking to do something much smaller. "I want to do a small film without special effects before I do any of that, just to do it quickly," he dishes. "We shot Fury Road for eight months… that's a lot. Every day in the heat and the dust, doing these stunts, it's very wearing. We've got two more planned, but at some point in the future."

It's very understandable that Miller would opt for a far less taxing project; Joss Whedon did a similar thing between the release of The Avengers and production on Avengers: Age of Ultron, making his take on Shakespearean tale Much Ado About Nothing in his own backyard. Still, the prospect of a pair of new Mad Max movies in the future is certainly an exciting prospect, so let's hope the first isn't too far away. Are you excited to see Miller return to the Wasteland?

Fury Road was so absolutely relentless and maniacal that it boarders on the incomprehensible.
Short answer: "uhhh, no."

Fury Road was a huge pain in the ass continuity wise, such bullshit that it got such critical acclaim when it doesn't really fit anywhere in the narrative timeline, and has little to no explanation if it's sequel/reboot etc. I really dislike it getting greater reviews simply because of its relativity to popular tropes and being alternate to them i.e.stronger female leads. It's not even a justifiable reason to rate something greater than it should be. Should of been judged for the merit of the film within its universe, not in relation to modern society. Max being peripheral to the story was a let down as well. I was a huge Mad Max fan as a kid, and was severely disappointed in the lack of cohesion and character implementation relative to the rest of the universe.

With that said, the pacing, cinematography and world aesthetic was [frick]ing top notch. Unrivalled by most films. I really hope George Miller drops the forced "edgy, I'm doing something different" feel to the next movie. And please make it a damn Mad Max movie.

Knowing my luck, he'll have to transport a gay couple across the wasteland to reunite them with their deformed children.

And [frick] me, Tom Hardy please fix that accent. Was painful to listen to.

It may be because I loved this movie so much, but the special features on this blu-ray were the best I've seen in a while.

@Cyrusthecitrus all the Mad max films have continuity issues, but it doesn't matter as they are supposed to be seen as myths and legends recounted to people years after the fact about this mysterious wanderer Max.
And there was nothing "forced" about the film unless you just don't like that thing to begin with. People liked Furiosa because she was a badass, can you deny that?

Hope the next one has as much crazy action as Fury Road which is probably the best geeky genre film I've seen since Fellowship of the Ring.
Do one of the films with Gibson too,Old Max would rule.

Hopefully Miller completes the trilogy. Fury Road was pretty amazing. If I had any complaints they would the villain and the lead. I feel like the villain was very generic and uninteresting and I also feel like we should have got more of Max himself.
