Prime Video's upcoming remake of 1989's Road House is now shooting with Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is directing from a script by Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry, and when the cast was revealed last year, it became clear this is a project the streaming service is taking seriously.
That includes Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp, and Bob Menery, while we'd later find out that UFC fighter Conor McGregor will also be part of the action reboot.
This spin on Road House will see Gyllenhaal play a former UFC fighter (which we're guessing explains McGregor's presence) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.
Now, we have a first look at Gyllenhaal and McGregor in the movie, with the dominant UFC double champion looking absolutely jacked for his biggest acting role to date.
There's been some controversy surrounding that as the fighter removed himself from the USADA testing pool in order to shoot Road House, prompting questions about the fairness of McGregor potentially using steroids between fights. Those remain a divisive topic in Hollywood, with Hugh Jackman recently shocking everyone by claiming he never used them to play Wolverine.
We're definitely excited to see this movie take shape, and it's clearly going to be another exciting action role for Gyllenhaal, especially after his scene-stealing performance in Ambulance.
While some might roll their eyes at the prospect of yet another classic action franchise being rebooted, we have a good feeling about this one, and the fact it's already found a streaming home (meaning it will skip theaters) is definitely intriguing. These days, that's no reflection on quality, of course.
Road House doesn't currently have a release date.
