DreamWorks' MEGAMIND VS. THE DOOM SYNDICATE Hits Rotten Tomatoes With 0%

The first Megamind is generally thought of as an entertaining, if unremarkable animated adventure, but DreamWorks' straight-to-streaming sequel is not proving to be as popular... at all.

The first Megamind movie wasn't exactly what you'd call a massive hit when it was released back in 2010, but it was fairly well-received by critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), and emerged as a family-favourite over the years.

To say that DreamWorks' direct-to-steaming sequel, Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate, is not proving to be quite as popular would be an understatement.

The movie is now streaming on Peacock, and the review embargo lifted the same day it premiered (never a great sign). Right now, Megamind 2 is sitting at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. A dreadful start, obviously, but it is worth noting that only 7 reviews have been counted so far, so at least a couple of critics are bound to give it a positive write-up... right?.

Even if you're not usually inclined to go by the critics, viewers don't seem to be much more impressed (it has a 7% audience score).

We probably should have seen the writing on the wall when none of the original voice cast agreed to return, although co-writer Brent Simmons indicated that this was mostly due to scheduling conflicts during an interview with Screen Rant.

"Yeah, there's a lot of internal discussions we're not privy to, but I think it ultimately usually comes down to the time. And having Megamind and this ensemble around, that's a lot of people's schedules to organize. So, I think it was decided early on to find fresh talent. But also, we were lucky enough to get Keith Ferguson, who was Megamind's voice in a lot of video games, and some of the commercials when the movie came out. We even cast a wide net, but we always came back to Keith because, not only does he have that experience of speaking in Will's voice, he's such a talented voice actor that he's able to kind of take the baton from Will, and build on what Will created. It's a collaboration, even though these two guys — I'm not sure if they've even met — it's such a cool and interesting thing to see."

Do you plan on giving Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate a go despite the negative reviews? Have a look at the trailer below, and let us know in the comments section.

"When Megamind's former villain team the Doom Syndicate returns, the newly crowned blue hero must keep up evil appearances until he can assemble his friends (Roxanne, Chum and Keiko) to stop his old teammates from launching Metro City to the moon."

Somehow the cgi is worse than the first movie, from 10 years ago lmao

@bobevanz - Dude, that trailer is horrendous.

The shot with them shooting tennis balls??

I had to slow it down to be sure; the balls just spawn in on top of the barrel. It’s not even subtle, it’s obvious the balls are not coming out of the tube, and just pop in at the front. Like a Nintendo 64 weapon 😂

And they decided to put that shot in the trailer!

How can this be? The first movie is more fun than a pair if jangling titties! Who let this happen?!

@ObserverIO - this is essentially just two episodes of the upcoming series strung together to a movie as a promotional effort

@Blergh - Straight-to-streaming. Glorified pilot. Not a real film.

I'm way less appalled now.

We watched it with the kids, we all hated it and didn't finish it. They love the first one. I didn't finish Aquaman 2 either. I didn't even start The Marvels. Enjoyed Poor Things though.

They should have just done a live action version with Neil Patrick Harris as Megamind.

Ouch, and I like Megamind the movie but this shows that maybe not everything needs a follow up.

For the most part sound-alikes for Dreamworks Animated Shows are nothing new, but the fact that this is a long-overdue follow-up still feels insulting! Even with that being said, I'm still intrigued to see where Megamind Rules goes in the next season after that massive cliffhanger! Also they better resolve that romantic tension!

No Will Ferrell. Obviously no Brad Pitt. None of the other big names that adorned the film.
Off to a banging start...

well with only 7 reviews in so far. me thinks article is a little premature. only because it seems to be using the 7 reviews as justification of its failure.

Out of the two, I always thought Megamind was better than Despicable Me, but one ended up being a bigger hit and starting a franchise.

@Vigor - hopefully but also the trailer was straight up hard to watch so I'm sure the show is crap. Also dreamworks tv projects are not known for being the highest quality.

I couldn't even watch the whole trailer. This reminds me too much of Norm of the North in terms of lazy "comedic" writing and pacing. I'm glad I won't have to suffer through it since I don't have kids in their target demographic anymore.

Didn’t even realize there was a sequel.
I’ll watch it just because RT sucks and I don’t buy into the crappy rating system they have going. Plus I’m starting to see G.A. as nothing I care to take opinions from.
