Pixar Plans to Focus More On Original Films and Less On Sequels

After disappointing releases with Cars 2, Brave and Monsters Universtiy, Pixar President Ed Catmull plans for the company to focus more on telling original stories and limit sequels to biennial releases.

Few companies can compete with Pixar when it comes to producing heartfelt family movies with stunning visual effects. However ,in recent years with the release of two Toy Story sequels, Cars 2, Monsters University, and Finding Dory on the horizon, Pixar has strayed from original story telling and fallen into the familiar trap that accompanies milking a franchise through the production of sequels. Pixar's last original production, Brave, also failed to meet many movie goers' expectations with previous films like Up to live up to. Pixar president Ed Catmull, seems to recognize that the frequent complaint of emphasis on sequels to past successes have lead Pixar into producing less than Pixar quality films, movies that have all our favorite characters in beautiful CGI, but lacking the heart of the original stories we all grew up watching. As a result, Pixar will work primarily on developing original features and limit sequels to releases every 2 years.

It could be argued that when a company produces a sequel to a film, it often can reduce the emotional impact of the story on the audience. With Cars, the audience enjoyed the story of a brash race car coming of age in small town that had been forgotten as the result of the construction of the interstate years earlier. The sequel featured the goofy but lovable best friend becoming a spy and blowing up bad guys. Now of course, Toy Story 2 and 3 were excellent films and I would be lying if I said I did not tear up at the ending to the third film. I like many in the audience was approximately the same age as Andy and could relate with the passing of childhood and putting away of childish things so to speak. These films however were an exception to a well established rule tested frequently by Hollywood. On the subject of original films vs sequels, President Catmull stated, “For artistic reasons … it’s really important that we do an original film a year". "Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world — which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.” Catmull added, "We’re going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something”. “That’s the rough idea.”

The release schedule for upcoming films include:
The Good Dinosaur – May 30, 2014
Inside Out – June 19, 2015
Finding Dory – November 25, 2015
Untitled Pixar Film about Dia de los Muertos – June 17, 2016
Untitled Pixar Film – June 16, 2017
Untitled Pixar Film – November 22, 2017
Untitled Pixar Film – June 15, 2018

Good, it is about time they turn it around, but I wouldn't call Brave that much of a failure, it wasn't as great as some of their original work but it was nowhere near as bad as Cars 2.

Monster U is doing decent in the box office but critically its not on par with the original. Same is argued for Brave that though original, isn't exactly up to snuff with other movies like Up, Wall-e, The Incredibles, etc. If its made by Pixar though, it will make money. It will be interesting to see how Monster U does in the long run.

Yeah no shit. The Incredibles was lightning in a bottle there's no way it gets better. You can't make a sequel to that and expect it to come out better. Just do this and focus on individual stories like in your hay day with the Incredibles, Monster's Inc., Finding Nemo and Bug's Life an stuff, Wall-E was badass too!

I saw Monsters University and I thought it was a very good movie, so I'm not sure where this "disappointment" is coming from. Sure, it wasn't a masterpiece, but it's unrealistic to think it would be.

As for Brave, haven't seen it yet. Cars 2 on the other hand...

Listen to some of you people moan about Cars because you did not like it. Guess what it was for little kids. My little nephew loves Cars. And as a result he loves and is interested in cars in general, something manly instead of some other pansy ass shit they have in some kids movies today. Now only if Pixar would come out with a movie called Guns. LOL

@Dmon

No, actually I'm complaining about Cars because IT [frick]ING SUCKS. BECAUSE THEY MADE A MOVIE ABOUT TALKING [frick]ING CARS. There's not even a concept there. You're the one who's juvenile to suspect...well, pretty much everything you just said. Don't defend something that your little nephew likes, I liked [frick]ing Batman and Robin when I was little, doesn't mean it should be defended because of it.

@Asterisk Like I said its a kids flick and I think its a good one for kids. That is the concept it's similar to Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends and Bob the Builder its for kids under 5 and hey some older kids might like it too.

Cars 2 is a disappointment. Brave and MU are not.

ATTENTION dumb ass hollywood EXECS...!!! It's not audience don't want sequels/prequels..they want film franchise that WARRANT a sequel or prequel. and Monsters U. is REALLY an UN-necessary film to make. same with Cars 2. as for Brave..well, the audience just had a similar lookin movie in How to Train Your Dragon and it also had familiar ideas from previous movies, like Brother Bear and some others..thus, it didn't really feel FRESH, which is what the audience EXPECT mostly from Pixar..which is blessing AND a curse for the studio. it's hard to always come up with fresh and new ideas all the time and hit em outta da ball park. but THAT'S what the audience expects from Pixar.

now as for sequels...the one OBVIOUS property that's got SEQUELS written all over it and the audience really EXPECT is...THE INCREDIBLES. give us THAT and more original movies, then the audience WILL come.

I don't see why there is so much hate for "Cars" and "Cars 2"; I enjoyed both, especially the first one. :)
