While in Japan promoting his latest film Insidious which opens in Japan on Saturday Wan was asked if he had any interest in working on a film that was based on a manga or a subject from Japanese culture. Wan replied, "I love anime and manga. I especially love ninjas. I think I would definitely like to work on a remake of Ninja Scroll, which is very popular in America."

Wan did not mention he was actually working on such a project, nor did he mention being involved with the previously revealed live-action remake plan from Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company and Warner Brothers.

Appian Way acquired the live action adaptation rights to the anime for Warner Brothers in 2008. Alex Tse, a co writer of the live action Watchmen film, wrote a film script for the project.

In Japan, Tatsuo Sato directed a Ninja Scroll television anime sequel for the MADHOUSE anime studio in 2003. MADHOUSE co founder Masao Maruyama is still working on plans for a second Ninja Scroll anime film. However, as of 2008, the project still needs a script that is acceptable to Maruyama himself and Kawajiri.
