It was revealed in a piece by The Hollywood Reporter that the anime industry has broken records and pulled in $17.7 billion. In Japan this amounts to ¥2.01 trillion, and marks the first time the industry has made it past the ¥2 trillion.

The article points out Makoto Shikai's critical darling as a major player in this impressive growth of revenue. Your Name took the world by storm when it was released last year. It earned $355.3 million at the box office and boasts an impressive 97% percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with Empire calling it "This decade's Spirited Away" and has gone on to become the fourth highest grossing film of all time in Japan.

This is a major feat for the film so it's not surprising that it would play a massive role in bringing in so much revenue to the industry. JJ Abrams' production company Bad Robot also recently won the rights to develop a live action adaptation alongside Paramount. The bad news is that the anime industry is notorious for its gruelling work schedule. Most major studios are also fully booked until 2020, which has resulted in a shortage of workers.

Many have spoken out in the past about the harsh working conditions, unsociable hours, and low pay. Let's hope that these problems are addressed so that they don't hinder any further growth for the industry.

How do you guys feel about this? As always, sound off below!

I'm glad Your Name was a huge hit. It opens up the world to anime not being relegated to the usual franchise trappings that people associated the genre with(i.e. Pokemon, DBZ, Sailor Moon).

When I attended a screening, there was a mother with her two tween children sitting in front of me. The mother wasn't generally interested and it was obvious, she was just bringing her children who appeared to be really excited to see it. She even was on her phone for the first couple minutes before her son told her to put it away.

Halfway through the movie, she was engrossed, even heard her audibly choke some tears back. By the end of the movie, she was sobbing and clapping.

Hopefully the work conditions can be worked out also, with the bigger revenue and more people can enjoy anime in all it's different forms.

Makoto shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki's films are not adaptable by any standard. Their films work because it is drawn. Even if a studio gave a director 1 billion dollars to remake their films frame by frame with live actors it would still be inferior. It is impossible to reproduce the magic of artistic freedom and their style of expression.

JJ Abrams and Bad Robot [frick] off.

I don't think many will read this article, or care about it. Actually, chances are quite a lot of people will think it's "just" anime, or that anime isn't all that serious, or downright stupid.

And yet, according to, well, everyone, really, audiences and critics alike, Kimi no Na Wa is the best anime movie ever made, or at the very least in the top 3. Its success is only precedented in Japan by Spirited Away, and it is the highest-grossing 2D movie in a lot of Asian countries from China to South Korea. RT has it at 97% after more than a year (which means it's stabilized), and the movie has won 11 best picture and best director awards for best animated picture, in London, Los Angeles, Paris, Barcelona, Sidney, Seoul… In terms of worldwide reviews, only Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke come even close to the praise Your Name received.

I was lucky enough to see it more than a month before release, during summer 2016, and I came out of the room and smoked cigarette after cigarette and couldn't stop smiling and crying at the same time. To me, it is the most beautiful thing, visually and emotionally, that I've seen in the past 5 years.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.

@Asturgis - Makoto Shinkai is a true master. being known with his work with gems like, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Voices of a distance star and The garden of words i already knew this man was the real deal in the anime community. After seeing Your Name Makoto has achieved God tier status to me. You like good wine , just like i do :)

Why would my name lead the anime industry to new heights?
I'm not that important.

"JJ Abrams' production company Bad Robot also recently won the rights to develop a live action adaptation alongside Paramount"

I think your name is adaptble but the problem is Holywood . Like Death Note the director in Holywood need to put américan movie code to the adaptation thinking it's the only way to make américan audience interested in the movie but they are wrong .
