AQUAMAN: Willem Dafoe On The Challenging Technical Aspects Of The Shoot

Batman v Superman viewers were quick to point out that Jason Momoa's Aquaman was holding his breath in his brief cameo in the Zack Snyder directed film. Here's how James Wan is solving this issue.

Speaking to ScreenCrush to promote his upcoming role as Ryuk in Netflix's Death Note adaptation, Willem Dafoe also touched on his role as Vulko in the DCEU's Justice League and Aquaman. Dafoe confirmed that Vulko won't really look like he does in the comics simply because Dafoe isn't the same burly body-type.  However, Vulko will have his usual relationship with Arthur Curry in the film as both an "advisor" and a "mentor".

Dafoe went on to add that his appearance in Justice League is very brief but he's enjoying filming on Aquaman and even detailed the technical process of how Wan is solving the underwater breathing issue.

"Most of my scenes are underwater. Some are not. So much of it, because we’re talking, and shooting underwater is a lot of ways impractical because you’re limited to what you can do with sets. It’s more about shooting them dry for wet, and then the effects do certain things to give the water feel.

But we aren’t doing the scenes underwater, but we are in harnesses and on wires. There is movement. It’s not like were all sitting around pretending were underwater like this [stands up still], we’re swimming around, we’re moving. So that should be really beautiful.
"

It sounds like Wan is shooting on a green screen stage, with the actors in harnesses and wires that sway, replicating the movements of someone that's under water. It will certainly be interesting to see how this footage is then transformed in post to replicate someone talking and floating beneath the ocean.

Aquaman hits theaters December 21, 2018.

So the two antagonists of the movie are Black Manta and Ocean Master?

@Invictor - Correct

@Invictor - Looks that way, I bet Manta gets injured but escapes and then returns as the man villain in the sequel

@Ha1frican - Suicide Squad 2.

@xAdam - thatd be cool, i hope they stop killing villains so that they can have their "'solo" movies with their respective heroes and then have their team film appearances in SS and maybe die that way .

@Ha1frican - That'd make more sense. Spare them until they appear in Suicide Squad then they'd be more inclined to actually kill them. More of the squad should've died in the first one, seriously, the premise is expendable villains and 2 of them died (Slipknot and Diablo), one of which was barely even a character.

I wrote my own Suicide Squad, y'know, just out of boredom in which only 2 (of the 6) survive. It's very different to the movie, started afresh, some different members n'all.

@xAdam - The problem with killing the ones they had though is they never appeared in solo films so your kinda handicapping the universe and anyone more expendable wouldnt be anyone anyone cared about so why bother but going forward I hope they are more deadly. Like lets get king shark in there and blow his ass open in like the first act after he tries to eat someone but I wanna see Aquaman take him down in like the intro to Aquaman as a one off thing before you do it.

@Ha1frican - Doing SS as one of your introductory movies into this universe was just flat-out retarded. They just want a bunch of characters, really quickly, to compete.. yes I'm going there.. with Marvel. Because, in the words of that movie's director "[frick] Marvel."

Whatever they did in JL seems to be good although we have really only seen 2 or 3 shots of that but youd think theyd take whatever they learned on that and made it better so im confident itll be good

I do like that Defo is Vulko although youd think theyd save him for a bigger role, maybe theyll actually do the Throne of Atlantis storyline and have him betray Arthur otherwise youd think theyd get someone less villainous or save him for a villainous role

@Ha1frican - Maybe Dafoe doesn't want to be typecast?

@Supafairy - BIT late for that isnt it lol

Supafairy - 8/18/2017, 12:47 PM
@Ha1frican - Lol, at least here he may not actually be an evident villain. :p Vulko in the New 52 is a good guy that just went about it the wrong way.

Ha1frican - 8/18/2017, 12:54 PM
@Supafairy - yeah i really liked that aspect of the characer. hes not Orm who isnt really all that bad but just has no qualms about murdering himans who he sees as apes he just kind of a sociopath that doesnt even see it as an issue. But Vulko is someone who knows what hes doing is horrible but feels itS necessary and even gives himself up after doing it and I think Defoe can do that balance of crazy yet noble

Supafairy - 8/18/2017, 12:59 PM
@Ha1frican - Absolutely. I'm a bit behind on Rebirth but I read the issue where they opened the prison vaults and he still told his co-captive that he didn't deserve to leave. He's loyal to Aquaman even though they don't agree on certain principals. I want to see THAT Vulko and it sound like we may get that.

Ha1frican - 8/18/2017, 1:05 PM
@Supafairy - its funny you say that because thats the only rebirth title ive read so far and they nailed that where Atlantis is under seige and he doesnt even want to leave bc he doesnt want anyone to think hes trying to escape its great stuff. I never cared for Aquaman until I started the new 52 run and everything since has been really great

Supafairy - 8/18/2017, 1:11 PM
@Ha1frican - That's great. I only have a few I read now, had to drop some titles because it just got too much. WW, JL and Aquaman. Have every single issues since the New 52 of all three. Aquaman and WW are just amazing stories. Very consistent imo.

Ha1frican - 8/18/2017, 1:22 PM
@Supafairy - Wonder Woman was great too i hope they lean into the Zeus' bastard plot in the movies at some point but considering they said that they are all dead i hope the WW sequel has Diana fighting Hades and then she could like drag the gods out of the underworld or something and then go with the whole demigod plot in the 3rd. I hope they go full sword and sorcery Wrath of the Titans greek mythology going forward with her movies. Im going on a rant here but I also hope they tie the gods into the overall universe like Poseidon maybe being the ancestor or god to the Atlanteans of Hermes having a connection with the speed force or Apollo maybe being the same as guy as Rao the sun god on Krypton like little connections bewteen the mythos

Supafairy - 8/18/2017, 1:27 PM
@Ha1frican - It'll be a nice nod but I think. I would love to see Strife and Hera, I loved the WW -Strife dynamic. I could see Charlize Theron rock it as Strife.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 8/18/2017, 1:29 PM
@Supafairy - My only issue with the Azarello run is the names. I hope they keep the standard Greek names but the versions of the characters from his run, also its really funny if you actually look at a pic of Brian Azarello he actually modeled War/Ares after himself
