Avengers: Endgame co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo have made no secret of their love for Secret Wars, and have admitted on several different occasions that they would be more than willing to return to work with Marvel Studios again to bring the classic comic book event to the screen.
“Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids, the books that we fell in love with,” said Joe during a recent interview with Deadline. “The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars.”
The Russos' passion for the wide-reaching crossover tale has led to persistent rumors that the pair have actually signed on to direct a Secret Wars movie, but if fans are expecting a big announcement at SDCC this weekend, they may be setting themselves up for disappointment.
While speaking to MTV's Josh Horowitz to promote their new Netflix action movie, The Gray Man, the brothers made it clear that no official conversations have taken place with Kevin Feige or anyone else about potentially helming Secret Wars.
Of course, if a major Comic-Con announcement was planned, they're hardly going to let the cat out of the bag here - but it is worth noting that we're still not sure if Secret Wars is even going to be the next big MCU saga. It does seem to be the direction Phase 4 is heading in, but there's every chance Marvel Studios have something else entirely in the pipeline.
We'll just have to wait and see what the studio has lined up for SDCC this weekend.
